Hiking, Cleaning, and Having Fun in Graz
Who would say that picking trash can be such an amazing activity? Well, when you are doing it in a great company, it has to be... A lot of laughs, a good time, and a bit of competition, and you can have a great morning! That's how it was at the #HCDGraz event 11 days ago, or to be more specific, May 3rd!
This was my second "group" #cleanplanet walk, after the first one in Hamburg last year, for which I didn't create a post (if I remember well)! Of course, what annoys me the most are irresponsible people throwing trash on the street, out of their cars, and especially those who throw trash in nature... That one is probably the worst... I have no idea why that is so "easy" to? Maybe because nobody is around, so they can do it? Arggh... Okay, I'm off-ranting, going back to this great CleanPlanet walk!
On the day of Hive Creator Days presentations (check my recap), @tibfox shared the agenda for this walk, so we gathered in our base, the Spaceland workplace, and hit the road toward the
Schlossberg hill (there were some complaints about the picked destination, mostly from people who are living in more "plain areas" 😂)... Claws, bags, and gloves were ready, and we were ready to go!

Part of my "Trash Team" (we lost @bil.prag somewhere... found him later... 😃)
We have formed teams at the bottom of the hill, just before we began to climb on a very nice trail... Now, when I roll the movie back, I can't remember that we saw many people using that trail as there were some other ways to get on the top of the hill... more about that closer to the end of this post...

The strategy was clear from the beginning... Hit the road hard, do the sprint at the beginning, walk in front of everyone else, picking up all the trash... Leaving no trash behind!!! 😂 Unfortunately, on that narrow trail that led up to the hill was almost no trash at all! Only a few cigarette buds... Nothing!

When we reached Uhrturm, a 13th-century medieval clock, our strategy fell apart completely! We weren't walking on a narrow path, and we couldn't "block" others to pick up the trash! The battle became fierce...
On the other side, beautiful city views were a big distraction! Whenever you look, you will see a panoramic view of the city, in combination with a lot of trees and green parks! Also, having a river passing through the city gives a special charm to Graz!

Keep your focus, ph! Someone yelled, "Look how much trash is on the other side of the wall/fence!" Say no more! My team partner @edje and I jumped over the fence, risking our young lives for the clean nature! 😂

Oh, no! @ninaeatshere found the gold trash mine and already filled half of her bag with garbage!!! Hurry up to get at least something before that sewer mine gets depleted! 😱 But, it was too late... She got a huge advantage in those moments, which was impossible to catch up... At least for my team... Complaints about the sun, the hiking, and empty bellies became stronger and stronger... We were at the end of our strength... Will we survive to the top? 😃

We did it!!! We got to the top and pulled out our last smiles to take the group photos with our "catch"! 150kg of trash in that small bag! You don't believe me? 😃 Congrats, @edje, @mipiano, @ratona, and @bil.prag! For me, we won that day! 😃 More seriously, we all win as we had such a great time doing something useful for nature that day! What else could we ask for?
My back still hurts because of how heavy that bag was! 🤣

Okay, maybe the main prize, but we left it to the teams of @ninaeatshere and @tinabrezpike... They were too competitive and nobody had a chance that day... It was nice to see that they split the reward among two teams! Nice job, girls! Congratulations!
What about my team? Our prize was on the menu above... 😂 After eating Schnitzels for 3 days, that was the turning point for me... I decided to go with the second-best Austrian option, the Wurstel!

On our way back downhill, most people pick the slide to go back to the bottom of the hill, while some of us wanted to enjoy the view of the city through the funicular... It was a short trip, but still with some stunning views!

A very meaningful event for our planet only where we can live now. When I am in nature such as forest, I collect trash which other people left behind carelessly.
When I go fishing, I do the same... It's amazing how people leave their trash behind them in nature... I don't know which one is worse, when they leave trash everywhere, or when they pack it in bags and LEAVE them like that... Like, WTF?? You think that garbage man will come to the forest to pick shit after you? 🤦♂
Anyways... It was nice to see that the park where we were was relatively clean... ;)

Huh... I didn't decide yet... Waiting to calculate all the expenses... Flights are more or less already there, accommodation numbers are out, waiting for the HF tickets price (as that wasn't cheap last year either)... and in the end, I have to find some company to take with me as the trip is very, very long...
All in all, I would like to go, but still not sure...

They do here too from time to time Sunday walks to clean, because there are full litter bins and what people do? Keep adding trash that falls in the ground everywhere!
That happens here in Spain, too... Even if you live in a fancy place, sometimes the garbage men don't come for days... Especially if it's a festive day...
But, seeing trash in parks, forests, or beach is even worse...
so great you nd others took part in this clean up, there is a group here called project cleansweep that does meetups to clean areas I have only joined them once but hope to again soon

A great thing you all did cleaning up. A little competition sure made it fun sore back and all 😆 I often bring a garage bag when I go river fishing sometimes I bring back more trash than fish. Always leave nature buy making it cleaner than it was before, win win!!

Really? I think Schnitzels are a very common meal at my home... We eat them at least 2-4 times per month... Of course, after the intensive Schnitzel tour in Graz, I reached my monthly bonus in 3 days... 🤣
I don't know if it is like here but a lot of river access is just messy. Now lakes and ponds are fairly clean. I guess it may be the lack of enforcement because its rare to get licenses checked on river. Probably because game wardens don't want to track on foot.
Its not very common here unless you find a German restaurant. Not too many of them here. There use to be one close to my work place I would visit occasionally but it closed down 😔
The same here... I had renewed my licence all these years, and in 10 years, I NEVER saw anyone checking them out... On the other side, as the sea is relatively close, not many people go fishing on lakes... People go there for a walk in nature, and in that way throw garbage around... But, the water (in lakes that I visited) is relatively clear...

It was a great day to spend with friends in nature, picking up trash... We got a few positive comments from people who were passing by!
as a leader of the whole group i decided to occupy one of the two benches there :D

It sounds like a fun trip, and cleaning up the environment is always nice. I think people tend to clean the area where they walk, so the places a bit more out of the way will have more trash. It's weird how people just throw things over the fence.
I suppose that people who clean the area didn't check out the space "over the fence" and that's why there was trash there... It is a bit inaccessible part, and understandably, not everyone is comfortable going there to pick trash... That's what you see behind us are treetops... Which means height of over 4-5 meters...
You should have taken the slide to afterwards, it was great fun :)
Maybe next time... There is a reason to go back and re-visit Graz... 😃

I wrote the story right under that photo... 😃 Nina found garbage piled up in that sewer and we were picking it out with the claws... lol... It was so funny as I was putting pressure on her to do it faster, as I was "stealing" "her trash" 🤣

It was a very nice day, filled with a lot of great talks, spending great time with other Hivians... And the city is beautiful! We had more time to explore it during multiple days... ;)
