Alcazaba Palace in Málaga, Spain .:. Historical Walk Behind the Walls

If you plan a trip to Southern Spain, where you want to check out some great historic places and research a very rich heritage, the best time to do it is already over... 😃 I mean, you can visit whenever you want, but going there in summer is the best time to go to the beach... Not great for rambling around open-air castles or streets, where you will probably get sunburnt!

01.jpg

We began to practice these New Year getaways when you want to check out new places and get familiar with a certain city or area... This year, on January 1st, we went to Málaga for a few days! We were there before, but only for a "pit-stop", when we did our road trip to Lisbon, Portugal... That visit was very short, but when we saw the city, we knew we would have to come back another time!

03.jpg

This time, we had a few days to explore the city, and one of the mornings was reserved for a visit to the Alcazaba, a palace/fortification/castle, in the heart of Málaga!

As we visited Alhambra, Granada a few years ago, a lot of things in Alcazaba reminded us about it... How it wouldn't when they were built by the same influence... What can be surprising for many is that the palace was built BEFORE the Alhambra, which is much more famous today!

05.jpg

The building began in the 11th century during the Al-Andalus period, and it was modified multiple times until the 14th century... Along with Alhambra, it is one of the best-preserved palaces from that period!

08.jpg

09.jpg

Like any other fortification, it is built on a hill, which means that the views up there are great! I can imagine how it looked back in the days when there were no huge buildings like nowadays... 🤗

10.jpg

What I liked the most in both palaces were these big gardens between different parts of the palace, inside the fortification... So much space, and so many different plants, fruits, etc.

11.jpg

12.jpg

13.jpg

What you can see in the image above is Gibralfaro Castle, which was connected to Alcazaba in the past, but today, you have these stairs that you have to take OUTSIDE of Alcazaba to climb to the second one... As we had a lot of walks planned for that day, we didn't visit the second palace, and this photo is a reminder to do it on our next visit! 😃 Btw, that place still holds the remains of Roman settlements underneath from the 1st century!

The Alcazaba is a palace; it was the place where rulers lived, but it was also one of the typical military fortifications, and that's why you can see signs of the place where the armory was, for example...

16.jpg

17.jpg

18.jpg

Another important thing in all these Muslim palaces from that time was water! You have it everywhere! They would use small water canals INSIDE the palace, where the cold water would pass by and cool out the place! Natural air-conditioner! 😃

19.jpg

Of course, this bathtub isn't from that period, but from the last century... It is a reminder of old Roman bathtubs...

20.jpg

22.jpg

A bit of HIVE photo shooting, trying to get that "perfect" photo... Which one do you like more, the left or the right? 😃

25.jpg
The map of Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro Castle and how they were connected

27.jpg

28.jpg

This was a narrow passage over the external wall of the palace... I can imagine some archers standing there, protecting the palace from intruders! On the left, you can see the roofs of settlements where probably soldiers slept...

29.jpg

30.jpg

32.jpg

Did I mention water before? Almost every "internal" yard would have one of these ponds (or pool if you like more), which are maybe 20-30 cm deep... I suppose the water would go through the palace, go to the pond on one side, and continue out on the other side toward other "rooms"...

33.jpg

34.jpg

Oh, I almost forgot! In that period, they mastered awesome ceilings, and these world-famous arches, full of details that would take place on entrances and windows of the palace...

36.jpg
Another look at the city from the other side of the castle...

37.jpg
Who says that the palace is not inhabited? He found the best spot! 😃

38.jpg

That would be all for this #WednesdayWalk through history and the awesome Alcazaba palace in Málaga! If you pay a visit to the city, don't forget to check it out as it's worth doing!

Hopefully, see you in Málaga in December this year! 😃

Thank you for your time.

The sightseeings from the top must be splendid! I wonder how it was like back in the day Cool to think about all the history that’s gone down there ;)

Hehehehe... You mean, for them in the past to think about how it will be in the future, or for us to think about how it was in the past? 😃

I suppose it was a seaport back in the past, too, maybe some pirate attacks, invaders trying to occupy the castle, etc... 🙂

Watch this in summer must be hell! There is so much to walk and see and all under the sun 🤣

But it's a great place, the architecture is lovely and of course a lot of green!

I prefer the photo on the right, more classical

Andalucia is a hell in the summer... Especially Cordoba or Sevilla (over 40 Degrees Celsius during the summer)... Málaga is probably not that bad, but it is hot for these day walks... That's why the winter is great for doing some tourist walks...

Why choose one, when you can take them both... 😛

Absolutely
Exploring historical places can be really exhausting in the summer heat but choosing to visit at the start of the year was a smart and perfect move. The cooler winter weather makes it more enjoyable and less tiring.

Malaga is on my list of places I want to visit, I have a cousin who moved there a few years ago, so I hope to visit her some day. The Alcazaba looks impressive and funny that it is not so famous if it was built before the Alhambra, and it looks so well preserved. The views of the city are breathtaking.

And although Mipiano looks pretty and elegant in the photo on the right, I choose the one on the left, jeje. She looks like a super heroine LOL

Hehehehe... I was too fast on the trigger to take the first photo... 😂 But, the final result was interesting...

And regarding Malaga, I hope you will make it and visit it... When you visit Spain, don't forget to stop by for a coffee or a drink... 🙂

I love seeing this place, but also seeing it through someone else's eyes, because I've been there five times already, and I don't mind going again and again and again. Castles fascinate me. I was so happy to see this post, it made me feel like I was there again, so magical!🤗

I know that feeling when you see someone else writing/showing your place, with an external eye... It looks weird, but it adds even more value to think that we take for granted!

Exactly, it's like saying... this person followed in my footsteps. That's great!

It looks like a nice place to visit.

The way of cooling is weird, but I guess it makes sense since the A/C probably didn't exist back then.

It is weird, but it makes sense... Water comes from the underground, and it's cold even during the summer...

Ohh!! Bonito lugar @ph1102, vistas espectaculares 😍. Lo que más me agrada es el estilo barroco, toda su arquitectura antigua aún es bella y bien conservada en Málaga. Un saludo bro, interesante post. Feliz día 😉🤝

The palace looked great! Somehow these historical places always look better than our modern buildings. Hehe.

Hehehehe... Of course they do! They are built much better than these new shiny buildings... I doubt that any of these huge skyscrapers will survive more than 80-100 years, and some of these old buildings are over a millennium old!

This is the kind of post that reminds me that I owe Spain a debt, a debt to go back and settle there, hahaha. Malaga seems to be a very special place, and now that I've seen the Alhambra, I understand what you've written here. It's very similar and apparently just as special. I'm glad you're getting to know places of interest my friend, and if it's with your wife, even better. A hug to both of you ❤️
