Hello friends from Hive. A few years ago, I placed a small aluminum tray on the rooftop, supported by a frame made from pallet wood. The idea was simple: to give the birds a place to drink water and cool off during the hottest months. Over time, I started adding little details—some branches, a few plants, a stone in the center, and even a small pump to simulate a spring. Without realizing it, I had created a proper fountain. And the gift wasn’t the fountain itself, but what it brought about: the birds came, claimed the spot, and I enjoyed every minute watching them. But you know how life goes. Sometimes it absorbs you, changes your pace, and some habits fall behind without you even noticing. So that little fountain ended up abandoned.

Yesterday, after a long time, I put the tray back in its place. I filled it with fresh water and waited for a while. Nothing. I thought maybe the neighborhood birds were different now, or that no one remembered there had once been a small fountain there. I gave up. I was about to head back down when it happened. You know that feeling when something you want—though you hardly expect it—finally comes true?

A warbler showed up on the rooftop. A common little warbler, but for me it was as if time stood still. First it perched on the edge, hovering cautiously, observing everything, measuring any possible danger. Little by little, it gained confidence. It came closer, settled on the rim, drank a bit, and then began to bathe freely.

Trying to describe that moment with words is useless. Some scenes are felt more than they are told. All I hope is that when you see the images, you can feel a bit of the joy that this tiny visitor brought me.

Since yesterday, I’ve decided to go up to the rooftop every morning to fill the tray before heading to work, with the sincere hope that the birds will come back to visit it like before. Maybe all that was needed was that: returning to the simple gesture that once began the little story I’m sharing with you today.

Hola amigos de Hive. Hace algunos años puse en la azotea una pequeña bandeja de aluminio sostenida por un marco hecho con la madera de un pallet. La idea era simple: darle a las aves un lugar para beber agua y refrescarse durante los meses más calurosos. Con el tiempo fui añadiendo detalles: unas ramas, algunas plantas, una piedra en el centro y hasta una pequeña bomba para simular un manantial. Sin darme cuenta había creado una fuente en toda regla. Y el regalo no fue la fuente en sí, sino lo que provocó: las aves llegaron, se apropiaron del lugar y yo disfruté cada minuto observándolas. Pero ya saben cómo es la vida. A veces te absorbe, te cambia el ritmo, y algunas costumbres quedan atrás sin que uno lo note. Así que aquella fuente terminó abandonada.

Ayer, después de mucho tiempo, volví a poner la bandeja en su sitio. La llené con agua fresca y me quedé un buen rato esperando. Nada. Pensé que tal vez las aves del barrio eran otras, o que simplemente ya nadie recordaba que allí había existido una pequeña fuente. Me resigné. Me dispuse a bajar y entonces ocurrió. ¿Conoces esa sensación cuando lo que deseas, sin mucha fe, termina sucediendo?

Una bijirita llegó a la azotea. Una bijirita común, pero para mí fue como si el tiempo se detuviera. Primero se quedó en el borde, revoloteando con cautela, observando todo, midiendo cualquier posible peligro. Poco a poco fue ganando confianza. Se acercó, se posó en el borde, bebió un poco y luego, empezó a refrescarse con toda libertad.

Intentar describir con palabras ese momento es inútil. Hay escenas que se sienten más que se cuentan. Lo único que deseo es que, al ver las imágenes, puedan sentir un poco de la alegría que me regaló ese pequeño visitante.

Desde ayer he decidido subir a la azotea cada mañana, para llenar la bandeja antes de salir al trabajo, con la esperanza sincera de que las aves vuelvan a visitarla como antes. Quizás todo lo que hacía falta era eso: retornar al gesto que un día inició esta pequeña historia que les comparto.
