A few words about the bumblebee / Kilka słów o trzmielu [ENG/PL]

The bumblebee is a very useful insect and is probably the prettiest of the bee family. Moreover, it is very useful because it is able to pollinate twice as many flowers as a bee at the same time. And also plants that cannot be pollinated by other insects due to the specific structure of their flowers, e.g. tomatoes, because the tongues of bumblebees are much longer, up to 24 mm.

Thanks to their rich hair, they can fly in light rain or fog. Even low temperatures do not bother them because they can work at 10 degrees Celsius.

Bumblebees are non-aggressive social insects, which is why it's so easy to take close-up photos of them. Only females have stingers and baskets for transporting pollen.

Depending on the species, the bumblebee builds a nest in the ground (in abandoned rodent burrows), tree holes or dead clumps of last year's grass. Workers breed from the beginning of spring to mid-summer, and males are born from August. Only young females overwinter and establish their own colonies in spring.

There are 29 species of bumblebees in Poland, including 15 in agricultural areas.

Trzmiel to bardzo pożyteczny owad i prawdopododnie jest najładniejszy z rodziny pszczół. A dodatkowo bardzo pożyteczny, bo w tym samym czasie jest w stanie zapylić dwa razy więcej kwiatów niż pszczoła. A także rośliny, które inny owad nie potrafi zapylić z powodu specyficznej budowy ich kwiatów, np. pomidory, bo języczki trzmieli są znacznie dłuższe, dochodzą nawet do 24 mm.

Dzięki swojemu bogatemu owłosieniu mogą latać podczas lekkiego deszczu czy mgły. Nawet niskie temperatury im nie przeszkadzają, bo mogą pracować przy 10 stopniach Celsjusza.

Trzmiele są nieagresywnymi owadami społecznymi, dlatego tak łatwo zrobić im zdjęcia z bliska. Tylko samice posiadają żądła i koszyczki służące do transportu pyłku kwiatowego.

W zależności od gatunku trzmiel zakłada gniazdo w ziemi (w opuszczonych norach gryzoni), dziuplach drzew lub zeschłych kępach ubiegłorocznej trawy. Od początku wiosny do połowy lata lęgną się robotnice, zaś od sierpnia rodzą się samce. Tylko młode samice zimują i wiosną zakładają własne kolonie.

W Polsce występuje 29 gatunków trzmieli, z tego na terenach rolniczych - 15.
