Shepherds of the Island of the Sun, Titicaca

A while ago, I was traveling through Bolivia and had the opportunity to visit Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, located at about 3,810 meters above sea level.
Just thinking about it is breathtaking!
Within this lake lies the Isla del Sol, a place that seems frozen in time. From the top of the island, I was able to contemplate dreamlike landscapes that left me in awe. Hace un tiempo estuve de viaje por Bolivia y tuve la oportunidad de visitar el lago Titicaca, el lago navegable más alto del mundo, situado a unos 3.810 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
Sólo pensarlo ya quita el aliento!
Dentro de este lago se encuentra la Isla del Sol, un lugar que parece detenido en el tiempo. Desde la cima de la isla, pude contemplar paisajes de ensueño que me dejaron asombrada. After our walk along the top of the island, we began our return to the village, passing through a forest, passing locals grazing their animals or simply walking around the island going about their daily tasks. This will be the topic of this post: the people, the shepherds, the locals, and their animals. The previous post was dedicated to the landscape, the lake, the sky, and the clouds. This post will be full of people.

Luego del paseo por la cima de la isla, empezamos a regresar al pueblo, para ello atravesamos un bosque, mientras tanto nos íbamos cruzando con los lugareños que pastaban a sus animales, o simplemente andaban por la isla realizando sus tareas cotidianas. Este será el tema de este post, la gente, los pastores, los lugareños y sus animales. Ya que el post anterior fue dedicado al paisaje, al lago, al cielo, a las nubes. Este post estará lleno de gente.

In addition to people, there were also local animals, such as sheep and llamas...

Además de las personas, también andaban por allí animales del lugar, ovejas, llamas...

As we left the forest, the view opened up completely, and we were able to contemplate the spectacular landscape once again: a pier in the distance and several boats on the lake, as if floating between sky and water.

Al salir del bosque, la vista se abrió por completo y pudimos contemplar nuevamente el espectacular paisaje: un embarcadero a lo lejos y algunas embarcaciones sobre el lago, como si flotaran entre cielo y agua.

Suddenly, an islander appeared, walking serenely. I watched her through my lens as she slowly moved away, blending into the landscape, as if she were part of it. Her figure was lost in the immensity of the surroundings.

De pronto, apareció una isleña caminando con paso sereno. La observé a través de mi lente mientras se alejaba poco a poco, fundiéndose con el paisaje, como si formara parte de él. Su figura se perdía entre la inmensidad del entorno.

When I lost sight of her, I found another islander walking backward. What's most striking is the hairstyle these women wear: a pair of long braids knotted down their backs, decorated with various ornaments that gently sway with each step.

Cuando la perdí de vista, encontré a otra isleña caminando de espaldas. Lo que más llama la atención es el peinado que lucen estas mujeres: un par de largas trenzas anudadas sobre la espalda, decoradas con diversos adornos que se mueven suavemente con cada paso.

Once in the village, I was struck by the bustling movement of shepherds and animals. The street resembled that of a populous capital: full of life, sounds, and hurried footsteps. Evening was falling, and the islanders were returning with their animals after grazing on the island, leading them to the stables.

Ya en el pueblo, me llamó la atención el intenso movimiento de pastores y animales. La calle parecía la de una capital populosa: llena de vida, sonidos y pasos apurados. Caía la tarde, y los isleños regresaban con sus animales luego de pastar por la isla, guiándolos hacia los establos.

The hostel where I was staying was located on the main street and had a small terrace overlooking the road. From there, I had a high vantage point and a privileged position to capture these images.

El albergue donde me hospedaba estaba ubicado sobre la calle principal y contaba con una pequeña terraza que se asomaba a la vía. Desde allí tenía un punto de vista elevado y una posición privilegiada para captar estas imágenes.

Amid the golden light of the sunset, the faces, colors, and movements transformed into wonderful postcards that spoke of an ancient routine.

Entre la luz dorada del atardecer, los rostros, los colores y los movimientos se transformaron en postales maravillosas que hablaban de una rutina ancestral.

As if time passed differently there, they stopped in the middle of the street to chat happily, sharing stories amid laughter and greetings.

Como si el tiempo pasara distinto allí, se detenían en medio de la calle para charlar con alegría, compartiendo historias entre risas y saludos.

As the sun set and the street began to empty, I went to the other end of the terrace to capture the sky, the clouds, the outline of the land on the opposite coasts, and the unique colors of the sunset with my camera.

Cuando el sol ya se había ocultado y la calle comenzaba a vaciarse, fui hacia el otro extremo de la terraza para capturar con mi cámara el cielo, las nubes, el perfil de las tierras en las costas opuestas y los colores únicos del atardecer.
