The image has a strong staged feeling even though you describe it as starting from a studio photo without effects.
That is what makes the edit interesting. It does not look like a normal portrait anymore, but it still keeps enough of the human shape to feel intentional rather than random. The dark framing gives it a slightly cinematic mood.
