Landscapes of the Island of the Sun
Landscapes of the Island of the Sun - Paisajes de la Isla del Sol
Isla del Sol is a Bolivian island located in Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, situated approximately 3,810 meters above sea level. This lake is shared by Bolivia and Peru and is home to landscapes of great beauty and profound cultural richness.
To visit the island, you must depart from the Bolivian city of Copacabana, located on the shores of Lake Titicaca. From there, you can take a boat that takes between an hour and a half and two hours, depending on the port of arrival on the island.
Once on Isla del Sol, we stayed in the village of Yumani, which is located in one of the highest areas of the island, approximately 250 meters above lake level. From there, the views are spectacular: you can contemplate the deep color of Lake Titicaca, the Inca agricultural terraces, and the snow-capped peaks on the horizon.
Once settled in, we set off to explore the island. This post is dedicated to sharing the views I captured from different points on the island.
We started walking and met a small dog who accompanied us for a while. I found it very cute how he would stop, look at us, and seem to wait for us, as if he wanted to encourage us to continue.
This is one of the first landscapes we saw.
We were soon struck by the sight of a friendly donkey grazing, silhouetted against the landscape with a pier in the background. In the distance, numerous boats could be seen, along with some village houses and the typical terraced crops that decorate the island's hillsides.
From that height, we could see boats plowing through the lake, leaving trails that slowly faded away. The contrast between the deep blue of the lake and the white lines traced by the boats offered a serene scene. In the distance, the reflection of the sun on the water and the clouds completed a landscape that seemed painted.
And the ever-present clouds.
Y las nubes siempre presentes.
To take these photos, I used my 55–300mm telephoto lens, which was more than enough to capture distant views and discover unexpected details. Thanks to its reach, I was able to photograph a boat sailing in the distance and even a solitary tree that would otherwise have gone unnoticed.
The shape of the clouds also amazed me; watching them transform from one moment to the next was magical. While the landscape remained unchanged, the sky changed minute by minute.
Beneath those clouds, in that distant landscape, we could make out the path that connects the mainland to the pier from which our boat departed for the island.
Scanning the horizon with my telephoto lens, I spotted that solitary tree, which, from a distance, seemed to emerge directly from the lake. Its silhouette offered an almost surreal image.
Looking along the nearest shore, I discovered a stone structure that caught my attention. Upon consulting with the locals, they explained that they were modern buildings, which disappointed me a little, as I initially thought they were of Inca origin. I could also make out moored boats and small piers on the shore.
Another discovery I made thanks to my lens was that of some shepherds with their animals on the shores of the lake. They were a man, a woman, and five donkeys. As I watched them from a distance, I thought they were completely absorbed in their tasks, never imagining that someone like me was watching them from so far away.
I turned my lens to the other side and could see the village in the distance. There, I discovered a wide path and, to the right, a narrower one where I could just make out some shepherds herding their sheep. They were much farther away than the ones I had seen earlier on the shore; they were so tiny that I could barely make them out.
I pointed my lens back toward the coast, and among all the photos I took, I once again spotted the shepherd couple with their five donkeys. This time, I discovered they were taking the path that leads up into the interior of the island, as if going about their daily routine, oblivious to my gaze.
I wanted to convey the grandeur of the landscape, which is why I took this panoramic photo. However, the photos fail to fully capture the beauty of the place; there's something about the immensity of the surroundings that simply escapes the frame.
On the lake, I discovered this curious contraption, probably part of some artisanal fishing method. I'm not sure what it is, but its shape creates a very attractive pattern on the water's surface.
Here are some other photos I took that afternoon: clouds reflected on the lake, terraced fields on the hillsides, stepped paths, and trees silhouetted against the horizon.
As we started back, walking through the forest where we had previously met the dog, we came across other shepherds and their animals. At first, I thought they were the same ones I had seen on the lake shore, but I soon realized they weren't: they were different, different animals, with their own animals.
This concludes today's walk. Upon returning to the village hostel, I was struck by the number of shepherds returning home with their animals. Each one was leading his donkey or sheep as the sun began to set and night fell. It was a peaceful, everyday scene.
That will be the topic of my next post.
See you soon! I hope you enjoyed this virtual walk as much as I enjoyed sharing it.
