War against our lovely old oak trees.

We have been attacked by some recent invaders called Polyphagous Shot hole Borer Beetles (Euwallacea fornicatus), and we suffer so many casualties. Hundreds of beautiful old English oak trees are being cut down. Sadly, the beetles also damage the beautiful old Plane trees, Box Elders, Willow and Acer species. They are now being cut down, not only to prevent the trees from falling over, but also in an effort to destroy the beetle nests inside the trunks of the trees. We just heard that the Maple trees are also in danger of infestations by the beetles.
Have a look at this.

This lovely water channel had two beautiful old oak trees towering over it. We loved to sit in the shade of the trees, and I used to take photos of the water spiders, dragonflies and other insects.

A good friend of mine, @thebigsweed posted a heartbreak story of his daughter having to cut the old beloved tree down that gave them so much joy in the past. Sadly, the tree was dying, and they had to remove it before it fell onto their house. We got chatting about the beetles that ruin the trees, and their ash trees were attacked by Emerald Borer Beetles.
We have a different specie of the beetles here. Funny enough, with regards to the Oaks, they attack only the English oak trees and not the Turkish oaks.

Sadly, this is all that remains of those two old giant oaks.

Now I am not joking, as the borer beetles can cause serious damages to a tree. The next few photos will give you an idea of what I am talking about.

This gnarled old lady below had a recent haircut, her lower arms (branches) spread very wide and the limbs were now amputated.

Believed to be the oldest oak tree in South Africa.

I don't know why the buckets were placed in there, but I know that there are tree and botanical experts on the property, and those guys know what they are doing.

Finally, just to give you an idea about the roots of the old lady.

And so, the war is on between the beetles and the scientists. They have started to develop some antidotes to try and cure the situation, like repellent pouches stapled on the trees but in the meantime, we are losing many oak trees. I have no idea who is going to win this war, but we pray that a solution will be found soon.
Unfortunately, my old PC was forced to restart, and I had to complete this post in the drafts section of PeakD. I think it was damaged by all of the daily power cuts.
So, in fear of the thing switching off again, I am just glad that I could complete this post now.

There seem to be issues with invasive species in various places. We saw flies in New York that are killing trees there and there are other cases in the UK. The plants cannot adapt quickly. It is sad to lose old trees. Did you hear about the one by Hadrian's Wall that some vandal cut down? That was big news here.

It is said that the beetles arrived in a load of fire wood brought in from the George/Knysna area. Originally the beetles are from Asia.
Here's a warning sign about the beetles.

The Hadrian's Wall tree was also big news here and do you know if they found the scoundrels that cut the tree down?

There's just no way this beetles are going to win this war, for cry out loud, this damage on the tree and both to humans...I am certain the scientist will win

We certainly pray that a solution will be found, but at the moment it's a real struggle.

We love that old tree and they are doing their best to save it. Let's hope that they can.

Such nasty little beetles. It's horrible to see such old oak trees dying, and not only those but box elders and even the maples. What a shame to see 300 year old oaks dying from pests... Even here in the US we are having these types of problems with pests introduced through shipping containers and destroying trees!

A very sad story and something should be done to inspect all shipping containers, before the release of its contents. Surely some sets of sprayers could be invented, similar to the ones that we have in the car washes over here. Losing trees contributes to global warming, and so many foreign pests are invading countries worldwide.

I'm sure such a system exists, but getting government or dock owners to use it is probably why it isn't universally done.

It is high time that a law must be made to state that it is compulsory for the both the exporters and importers to sanitize each container, that leave, or arrive at their shores.
Something needs to be done to prevent the spread of pests and illnesses.

I'm with you one hundred percent on this one! It really is becoming a huge problem around the globe.

It is not easy to cut a tree, it has been for a long time, but the way we have seen that you have cut it with a lot of effort and all these places are looking very beautiful. There is a lot of comfort.
