Some lovely wet days here.

The forecast was that we would only have two dry days this week and in here I will show you how the birds handle the wet weather.
Firstly, I will show you the reason why this little guy was singing so happily.
130.JPG

I took the photos in some trees that are across the road from our house in the morning, as we had a meeting scheduled with two of the Papillon board members to discuss impact and service priorities. Nothing is easy these days and we know that it is the same all over the world, as people face some severe struggles. It appears that the lengthy Covid lockdowns have left many in a state of apathy and lethargy. On the economy front there is also nothing to crow about and things just seem to be deteriorating all round. But I digress and come to see what the birds are up to during the rain breaks.

We had a temporary break in the rain and as you can see below, everything was wet.
002.JPG

The little fella is a Southern Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris chalybeus).
076.JPG

The have a nest in a bush below this Acacia thorn tree and he popped up to dry himself.
092.JPG

The birds are very busy during the rain breaks, as some are feeding babies and others pop out to clean themselves.
083.JPG

The first new rain cloud started coming over driven by a strong wind.
099.JPG

So this guy knew that he had to be quick and here he was cleaning his water clogged ears.
072.JPG

He also used the wind as nature's hair dryer. Or should that be feather dryer? :)
120.JPG

And finally, this was when he started to sing.
097.JPG

Now for something else. A challenge.

I saw 3 birds in this tree. Have a look if you can also see them.
059.JPG

There was a pair of Southern Fiscals (Lanius collaris).
051.JPG

And one male Swee Waxbill (Coccopygia melanotis).
040.JPG

The third bird was at the top of the picture at the front of the pole inside the yellow circle.
064.JPG

Keep the pot cooking fella. One of the many sayings when I was in my 20s with a wife and 3 children to raise. But I stuck it out until the day that my youngest completed her education and then I was out of there. So I know how that little songbird feels having a pregnant wife and protecting the nest come rain, hail or sunshine. To get out during a rain lapse and to clean himself is a simple pleasure and instead of going around with a long face and moaning, he rather decides to sing. This is their way of life and it's a lesson to all of us to stop moaning and to rather take up singing :)
All things will pass as such is life.

I hope that you have enjoyed the story and the pictures.

And That's All Friends.

The photos are truly lovely. Really great captures. You must have move stealthily since the birds remained still longer enough to be photographed.

Thanks, the wind pushed rain cloud our way, arrived overnight, light drizzle this morning. What a pleasure watching the birds enjoy the cool wet weather, little patches of sunshine, they singing whilst drying their feathers too.

Being positive about all things takes far less effort vs being angry and negative, there we agree, life is too short helping the next person really is not difficult when organized as communities.

Glad about the rain and the birds teaches us how to enjoy the special moments in life. With happiness and thanksgiving.

Positivity on the foundation of hope helps us to accept the things that we cannot change and in the meantime we all can certainly help to make the lives of others a bit easier.

During daylight hours much to see and do, nights here still helter skelter, getting worse with elections coming again. Last night tent up the road for ANC gathering, AK47 shots fired off randomly....

Still have emergency groups up and running since uprising, hope for the future is all we are able to do until the outcome.

Now this is something that I can never understand, Why fire off random shots with assault rifles when there is a political meeting? Don't these people know that they are supposed to be the servants of the people?

Good that the groups kept on going, as maybe they will be much needed in the future.

Don't they know it is illegal to discharge a firearm in public?

No comment with going on of late, red party cadre state I really hope we don't become.

Obviously not, as they regard themselves as above the law.

In those days you will see things that you have never seen before. Very wise words and it prepares one for the future.

Oh, those lovely wet Cape days. I am missing them in some sense. Hearty soup and freshly baked bread. Here up in Gauteng, the temperatures are already reaching 30 degrees. I heard from my parents that it is so cold down there!

Lovely photographs and always lovely to see the diversity of birds from our lovely town!

Sad that you cannot experience it and we heard from Marian's parents about the heat up there.
A person would never think that we live in the same country !LOLZ

Thank you for the appreciation!

Such a shame as I love a nice hearty soup that I cannot even begin to eat in the summer. But there is always next year to look forward to!

Yes, it is crazy, not only in terms of weather, but politics and languages and so on!

So, at this stage it sounds like you will be eating your favorite soup for the duration of winter, down here next year? Beware though, as we make our plans and then life happens.

The whole world is upside down lately my friend.

Yes, for sure! I’m hearing about the weather down there; one day 30 the next day 10 degrees. Crazy. And yes, we always make plans and life messes with those plans. Wishful thinking though!

Not only the wanky weather down here mate, but also the many power cuts again. 2 today from 2-4:30 afternoon and again from 10 to midnight. Now here's the thing. Yesterday they said that today would have no power cuts, but last night when everyone was sleeping, they slipped in the new power cuts.
So, we had to cancel some plans and thank goodness that I have scheduled a post for today.
That's what I call, "Then life happens" !LOLZ

Sorry for only responding now! Life literally happened! Haha. I am so busy trying to fit in everything, I can feel the burnout looming in the horizon. My promotors are pushing me to finish the PhD and I also want to finish it but the brain can handle only so much.
Ugh, the power cuts are really a nuisance. I cannot even imagine how we operate in these trying times. I am so glad that I only have to deal with electronic devices that needs to be charged. Those with running fridges or recipes depending on power is surely having hell.

No need for sorry and thankfully Hive can give you a bit of a break. Be very careful and afraid of burnout, as it takes a very long time to recover, if at all, as we are still not fully recovered.
Tough times my friend and it is speculated that things will get worse. People and the economy are drained and sooner or later uprisings will start. Of course, nobody is to blame for the current state of affairs, but that is normal. Such is life.

Seems like life does not want to give me time. Trying to get to everything and everyone. Delegation and saying now for things are some of the hardest tasks in life. I want to do too many things in one go. I have luckily said no a couple of times now, but time still slips from my fingers.

I am keeping the burnout at bay, but it looms like a nasty cold front over the ocean. Hopefully, it does not come closer.

Hopefully, we will have some firewood left so that I can still bake some bread to share when the uprisings arrive. Jokes aside, I hear things are getting worse, the news this morning of a possible stage 7. We will be okay, South Africans are tough. At least, I want to stay positive.

You seem to have a very busy life, but you are still young enough to handle it. Remember that the word "no" was meant to be used. So put up a few boundaries, as then time will become your friend.

Yeah, good idea to keep the burnout at bay. One way is to always enjoy what you do, and I have learnt that if you do not enjoy it then dump it. I am not talking about your PhD here, but just general life.

Haha, yes. I think that this is the only country that has a product "electricity" that they sell, but then they ask the buyers not to use it. Then they threaten the buyers that they will take more of it away.
Positivity, and hope, are always great weapons!!!

So true. @urban.scout is helping me in that department; she says no for me (as I want to do way too much)! I need to learn the art of saying no in a productive way. And I need to finish the PhD in a sane state of mind, not in a hospital bed because of some accident caused by burnout.

Oh yes, that is some truly South African thinking. I saw this morning that South Africa imported solar panels worth 5-gigawatt power potential in the last year, which is more power capacity than one power station. That says something of the state of the country.

I am happy that @urban.scout is in your life now, as she is obviously the sane one in the partnership. !LOL

Now this is also true South African thinking, as we are self helpers and the way that things are going now with the Solar installations, Eskom might soon become redundant. On another note, we have an oil field here in SA, but no urge to develop it, as then petrol will become cheaper, and then government will lose big money on their petrol taxes. It's like shooting the country in the foot.

That is always the problem with these new types of governments and global economies. It is all spreadsheets and infinite growth. Locals and their needs are never heard above the calls for more profit despite environmental issues and local people. It is good that local people are fighting and standing up for themselves. Hopefully we can do that with this current issue.

The photos speak for themselves, the mere fact of looking at those birds in those trees inspires relaxation and the desolate street also inspires a lot of tranquility.

Thank you and I have translated your text. Relaxation and tranquility are the good things in life.

It would be awesome to have such beautiful colourful birds around - maybe I would just sit on my balcony with the long lens on my camera 📸

We can learn a lot from the animals - appreciate the sun after the rain, the little nice moments in life 😊

The weather has been hectic all over. Wierd wet. Hot. Frost. Wind that scares the feathers off a sunbird. And yet, they're still happy. Like yours. Have a wonderful weekend. Even if it comes with all four seasons
