On the road to nowhere.

I thought to show you the beauty and vastness of our Western Cape roads, that we took during our latest trip. We covered a 196 km x 2 = 384 distance there and back. My wife was the driver, and I was the passenger (photographer).

Not really on the road to nowhere, as we were returning from the town of Montagu.

I just cannot tell you in words how beautiful the countryside is, whenever one travels on the countryside roads, instead of on the main highways. There are also many shortcuts that the locals developed over time, and it saves a lot of kilometers of driving. Aside from that, as I said, the countryside is really lovely. We are now in the early summer season and most of the harvests have been done, so soon the planting season will start again. In the meantime, the harvested fields all have different colors that turn the views into the look of almost a colored puzzle.

Let me show you this historical mountain pass.

Look at the small square building at the top of the pass.

Here you can get a better view of the square building at the top right of the picture.

This was a fort and the line of square holes was not for air conditioning, but rather for the soldiers to use for their rifles during the Anglo-Boer war. Those days the pass was dirt road, and the fort offered an excellent view of any movement through the pass down below.

If you want to see the town of Montagu, kindly have a look at this source link below. There are also some pages in the site, such as accommodation, activities and history.

Here is a short description of the Montagu town on the site.

This perfect getaway in the Langeberg, near the Robertson Wine Valley and not far from the Breede River Valley, takes some time to explore. The beautiful town of Montagu, famous for more than its Hot Springs is the perfect retreat for eco, wellness and adventure sports, as well as golfing holidays, wine and food! Montagu is situated on Route 62 approximately 2 hours drive from Cape Town and leads into the Little Karoo. Look forward to a whole new world of magic and sensual pleasure as you pop through the hole in the wall at Kogmanskloof with its amazing geological folds, faults and a British fort from 1899. Accommodation in Montagu for all tastes is as diverse as Montagu itself.

We had a lovely and relaxing break at the Avalon Springs in Montagu, and if it was not for the kind help of the lovely Lady @lizelle, we would never have had this great opportunity. So, it is also with our heartfelt gratitude to her for her help.

Please note, that I have taken many photos and I will regale you with a host of posts to show you some incredible sights. For now, I hope that this one of the roads that we have traveled, will be acceptable to all.
Life is a gift, and if we can learn to appreciate every moment of it, then it is always a life-changer. So many are in dire situations, and because of it they don't value life, much of it not of their own doing. And it is these souls that we try to help at Papillon.

I hope that you have enjoyed the pictures and the story.

We really do live in a beautiful part of South Africa. And, as a matter of fact, I live on the Road to Nowhere.... just saying....

We were so glad to finally meet you in person Lady @fionasfavourites and yes, during our next visit, we will certainly stop at your haven on the Road to Nowhere.
You are a very special person, as even after the break ins at your house, we have seen how you still support the needy members of your community. Sheer evidence of your good heart and we are glad that you enjoyed the meeting with us.

I definitely want to take that road to nowhere sometime in the future, and enjoy those mineral spring waters!
We drove the Kogmanskloof Pass in 2020 just before the Covid lockdown hit, love that archway but we did not even know about the old fort! We only drove as far as Die Kloof Padstal, and had to turn around as time was against us.
Your photos really show off that stunning part of the world!
It was an absolute pleasure, I am so glad that you enjoyed the well-deserved break.

You just need to tell us that you are coming, and we will be sure to accompany you.
Hahaha, funny that you should mention not knowing about the fort, as the first time when we went to Roberstson, we also didn't know about it. Thankfully this time round we had more time for a proper look at it. Our story about Die Kloof Padstal is that I was waking backwards to get a photo of a bird in a tree outside, and I fell after tramping in a ditch in the parking area. So, this time we didn't stop there.
Thank you for the appreciation, as I really wanted to show the beauty of the area. A few more posts will follow, as there was so much to see.
Thank you again for your help, and we did indeed enjoy the break.

'Road to Nowhere' is one of my fave songs, by Talking Heads. Have you heard it? By the way, I sent a !PIZZA courier your way, hope he will not go a wrong lane.

So strange, as it is also one of our favorite songs and that's why I used the title for the post. You are the only one that noticed it and well done.
Your !PIZZA is also in the post.
