Never seen the Blood Moon like this before.

The moon had already started the eclipse as it rose from behind the mountain.
102.jpg

I will show you the entire sequence of the total eclipse as it happened.

We had so hoped that it would be a clear sky, but sadly not to be as there was a mist covering the sky. On the day I took a picture of the first morning small cloud that I saw, and during the course of the day that small cloud became a monster that covered the whole sky. The wind was blowing from the West towards the North-East and I, at that stage, had no hope of seeing the total lunar eclipse.

Thankfully, by late afternoon the wind direction had changed, and it started to blow the clouds away, but not totally as a mist stayed behind to cover the sky. Nevertheless, the mist was not dense enough for us not to see the moon. I was not sure where exactly the moon would rise, and so we parked the car in a wide-open area. So, without much further ado, let me show you what we saw.

Ah! It was the first sight that we had of the moon.
096.JPG

A lovely sight of the moon reflected, not in a dam, but instead on my car's roof.
101.JPG

By this time the eclipse was already halfway up on the moon.
104.JPG

The two shots below will show you how the shadow continued to rise up on the moon.
112.JPG

118.JPG

And then it was done, as the moon started to disappear.
122.JPG

But now don't lose hope, as I will show you how the moon emerged from the dark of the eclipse.

126.JPG

Ever so slowly, a ring of white light started to rise from the bottom right of the moon.
129.JPG

The white light gradually increasing to rise on the moon.
140.JPG

156.JPG

And finally the normal moon started to appear with a black cap of the shadow at its left top.
158.JPG

And that was it. The eclipse was done.
164.JPG

The blood moon was widely advertised on the internet, and it was always dependent upon the clarity of the night sky whether we would see it or not. Sadly, the people in the northern hemisphere were not able to see the eclipse as it covered mostly the southern hemisphere. Countries like South Africa, parts of Asia, and many others in the southern hemisphere. There was a lot of dust in the sky, and maybe I should have used the tripod.

My wife reckons that she can see a face on the moon. Look as I might, I cannot see it, but you know that females are always right. Long ago, I went for guitar lessons with Mick. He was one of the guitarists in a South African band called Ballyhoo. And they had a song called, "Man on the Moon". The refrain of the song goes like this..."Man on the moon, can you hear me calling you...". So, maybe, like my wife, they could also see a man on the moon:)
Such is life.

I hope you enjoyed the pictures and the story.

We couldn't see a thing last night, the cloud was so thick. Yours are great images, especially against the backdrop of the mountain

A pity about your conditions, but like I always say, there will be a next time. Glad that you liked my images, and I thought that the mountain would add some character to the view. It is spring here now, and in a few months when summer arrives, the moon would have moved to rise behind the craggy mountain peaks. I love to get the full moon behind one of those peaks.

Ha ha, you had much better luck than I on this one! Murky sky after hot day then cloud, not much luck. I had an absolute party in winter of 2018 watching and documenting as it happened, well done. Always enjoy watching these natural events.

So, obviously you didn't get to see the moon. Such a pity, but there are many more moons for you to see with clear skies.
I don't know if I got the Blood moon in 2018, but what I do know is that I posted it a few times before this one. natural events are head spinning stuff:)

I adore how this blog gives the gradual transformation of the moon. As someone who didnt witness the eclipse, because I was wrong understanding the clock, this gives me a seconhand experience of the phenomenon. I must be so happy if I saw it myself but I was just sleeping earlier because I thought it would appear on the afternoon. But it appeared on midnight. Very silly of me.

Thank you JJ, and I only battled a bit with the light clouds. But I am not complaining as it was a great adventure.

This is a beautiful read. I especially admire the way you captured the moon, it's so good to be true😲

Saying your wife sees a face on the moon, is actually true, sometimes when I sit outside my house on a full moon, and I look up to the sky, I actually see a face smiling at me, and beside that full moon, I also see an angel holding a bird. So I can actually relate with your wife in that aspect. Please send her my regards as well😊

I enjoyed the post @papilloncharity and especially the amazing images of the moon.

Thanks for sharing and my warm regards 😊

So good to be true indeed. I had a great time, even with the bad light.

I know that women all stand together, and I will tell my wife about the things that you see on the moon. She will be happy to hear that others also see figures on the moon :)

I am glad that you enjoyed the post.

Blessings, and kind regards.

Thank you for sharing your fantastic pictures, @papilloncharity! I feel like I got to experience it even though as you said it was not visible to those of us in the northern hemisphere.

Thank you Lady Jayna, it was really a great experience, and a pity that you guys in the northern hemisphere could not see it. I hope that it will appear in the northern hemisphere the next time.
