Months as a caterpillar and days as a butterfly.

And not any caterpillar, as it will become a Citrus Swallowtail Butterfly (Papilio demodocus).
029.jpg

I wondered about its thoughts as it looked at me with one eye.

The lemon tree in our backyard is fairly sheltered from the very strong winds that we battle with here, and last season we only had one caterpillar in the tree. Now there are many more caterpillars in the tree, and I took a few shots of some of them. At first, I will show you how a Swallowtail lays her eggs, and then I will also show you what the Swallowtail's earlier, or young, stage larvae looks like. Then of course, it will also transform into a pupa, but we will have to wait for this lot to go into the pupa stage.

And here he greeted me head on. Does it know that it is only going to live as an adult for 6-14 days?
021.JPG

This is how she lays her eggs, and it's a very fast move.
015.JPG

Sit, lay the egg, and fly.
016.JPG

I took a picture of the egg on the leaf above the young larvae below.

Here was another one, in a different section of the tree.
024.JPG

The butterfly lays her egg in warm conditions, and then 6 days later the larvae emerges. The larvae then goes into a period of approximately 1 month, and the changes to the larvae starts to take place in stages called instars. The caterpillar starts to spin silk, in a chosen spot in the tree and then it covers itself with the silk to become a pupa. The pupa stage takes about 2-3 weeks before the butterfly will emerge.

In the two pictures below, you can see that two caterpillars are taking a rest, as they eat a lot. And when I say a lot, many of the tree leaves disappear.

And then, after the rest, it simply starts to eat again.
019.JPG

Finally, you can see that this one is either testing its silk spin, or it is going to spin itself on that leaf. I will have to keep an eye on that leaf.

I don't think that I can remember where that leaf is, but I shall try my best to find one that has spun itself into a pupa. Nature is so amazing, as every minute detail of a butterfly's transformation was designed by our Creator. They say that the transformation stages are called metamorphoses, and it merely means from birth to death, and the changes in-between.

Last season we were fighting aphids on the lemon tree. Not only the white ones, but the deadly black ones. So, I firstly gave the tree a severe pruning and then treated the tree with Neem. At this stage, it seems to have done the job well as the tree is now lush, but we will have to wait for the blossoms to see if the fruit tastes any better. If not, then we will follow the same treatment this year. The butterflies seem to like it more this season.
Such is life.

I hope you enjoyed the pictures and the story.

I'm so glad they managed to save these lemon trees and restore their health. As for the photos, each one is simply spectacular! What patience it takes to find the perfect moment for each frame... Bravo!

It is my lemon tree in our back garden, and after cutting it down, I wore every thorn prick on my skin as a badge of honor :)
Glad that you liked the photos, and you are right, as it takes time the get them in the correct focus.

Yes, they're very prickly and their wounds look like they've been through a war, haha!
Hugs!

True and very hot here. The sun is drinking tons of water, and it will result in big storms inland and in KZN.
Marian also sends her greetings to you.

Loads of electrical storms of late, one passed over midday today, wee bit of rain then sunshine once again! Weird I think the right word at the moment.

Strange weather, isn't it? Also over here, as in the morning, we had the entire sky covered in a solid white color. I will soon do a post about it, as it's a first to see for us.

Wow, this green caterpillar is truly unique and beautiful. It's been a long time since I've found one like this, and I hope I can find one on my next hunt in the forest.

Thank you, and I think that the citrus swallow tail butterflies like the way that I pruned the tree, as we counted 3 of the caterpillars thus far in the tree. I sincerely hope that you will also have success in finding one.

When there is a lemon tree, there is a caterpillar. Unless someone have put toxins in the plant. The caterpillar looks so stunning and enchanting, with its skin of gree color and some brown lines. They are very steady to take photos but it is just hard to maintain the focus. I did try to take caterpillar and the crazy thing is I tried it to the caterpillar the same to yours. Exactly the Papilio demodocus. Im glad you did not bother to take it and throw it, just like what ignorant folks do. The leaves might be ripped and done but at least you gave way for nature to operate. Mercy is what it takes to not bother it. He is hoping to be greeted of mercy.❤️

No toxins here, as we leave the tree and the insects on it alone to take nature's course. I don't care if all of the leaves are eaten by the three caterpillars that is now in the tree. Yes, I know that it is a bit difficult to get them in focus, and I really hope that you will also get one on camera. I cannot imagine a world with no butterflies, and the bees are already in danger here.
We look forward to seeing the butterflies when they emerge from their pupae.
