Flooded and 23 hours with no electricity.

The Cape of Storms in South Africa is true to its reputation, as we have had tons of water here, still raining now and more rain is on its way.
059.jpg

Not a pleasant experience, as it is cold and one had to wash out of a bucket again.

We had a level 6 warning of storm rains arriving and creating havoc all over the place. What they didn't tell us, is that our area's electrical sub-station would also be flooded, leaving us with no electricity from 8 am yesterday to 7 am this morning. I feel for the moms with the babies and for the old people during these situations, and the working class also had to take great care on the roads. Many roads here were dammed, and cars got stuck due to the water wetting the engines. Several townships were also flooded again, and such is life at the moment.
I will try here to show you the strength of the water.

The first two photos in the post are of a flooded house that is situated right next to the river.
034.JPG

I was out at first light this morning praying for the electricity to be restored, and by grace the street lights came on as I stood outside our house telling me that the power is restored.
043.JPG

So of course, we had to go out to go and see what was happening in nature, as we were told that the river had burst its banks.
033.JPG

A dam where there shouldn't be a dam, as I have shown you many times before that this is our local park.
188.JPG

The power of the water rattled this gate post and you can see the head of the other column laying there on the grass.
353.JPG

A full grown tree was simply uprooted by the flood.
348.JPG

Here below is a closer look at the tree.
329.JPG

And that old hollowed out guy also didn't stand a chance of surviving.
341.JPG

Finally, imagine how it is to try and wade through this dam with your car on your way to work.
217.JPG

We half-and-half expected this, but we didn't reckon that the electrical transformers would be knocked out, and obviously neither did the council. The poor guys had to work through the night to try and reconnect the power to our area. We have recently acquired an inverter battery machine to protect us against the power cuts, but the battery can only last to a maximum of 4 hours. So, a 23-hour power cut will leave us in a boat with no paddles. Fortunately, we have a little gas stove that served us well to heat water to wash with. There are others out there that have nothing, and I will show you some mattresses and clothing that were washed down river. They originate from the poor people that sleep under the bridges and now they have nothing. Such a sad state.

I hope that you have enjoyed the pictures.

And That's All Friends.

Did you get pictures of the main channel? It must be really wild :) ...

Hopefully it will get back to normal soon though! Where are the homeless staying???

Nope, I cannot get up there, unless if I have a drone.

No normal soon as still another 2 weeks of rain over here. The homeless are placed into the shelters that are in use for emergencies.

Why can't a more permanent solution be put into place?

Many permanent shelters exist but we are flooded with people and the shelters are all full.
Even if a new shelter that can house 20,000 people could be built, it will still not be enough.
In one township over 80,ooo people had to be evacuated due to flooding.

Yep, very difficult and they are placed in community halls and temporary camps until things clear up.
Then they will go back to the places where they live and rebuild their shacks again. Only to get flooded again when the big rains arrive. A never ending story at this stage.

For those without any roots, would it be possible to get them a piece of land to build on where they wouldn't be at risk of flooding? Maybe they could even start some good vegetable gardens...

These are the belongings of the street people that stay under a bridge Hannes. We got some food for them, but we cannot find them. I am worried about where they sleep now, as it is very cold and wet at night. They must have gotten the fright of their lives when that strong river washed them out.

Thank you and we are fine, especially now that the electricity is back on 😊

I took that image just before dawn early this morning. Glad that you liked it.

Cheers and thanks.

I have no words, my friend, living under a bridge is bad enough, but what's happened there is just terrible and I would be more than frightened.

I am happy that you're okay and you have got the electricity back 😊

A terrible thing to happen to someone and we still can't find them. I think that they only emerge during the night and it rains here now every night, so we can't go out to look for them.

Thank you kindly and it was not a pleasant experience, but we are survivors 🙏 !LOLZ

Many people here are preparing for a blackout or worse, even we have a big power bank (it's in my van) and food for a week or two in the cellar, but I'm sure that if it happens, most people will not know what to do.

You guys have been practicing blackouts and food shortage for years - you'll just smile at us 😉 !LOLZ

Let me tell you that it's not easy at the beginning my friend. We even sold our freezer, as the food goes bad in it with all of the power cuts. I was not interested in storing an empty freezer for the next 5 years or more, as that is how long it will still take to restore the power generation.
But after 7 years now, we treat it as normal and 8pm today is our next power cut 😉 !LOLZ

Cheers and thanks.

Electricity has become very expensive and people are talking about Blackouts and worse things. My "company" is also preparing and one of my co-workers has a quite busy job at the moment 😅 !LOLZ

Oh, that's not good news, as our blackouts has resulted in the electricity prices mooning. Everyone is now installing solar to generate their own electricity, as we have much wind and sun over here.
It sounds suspicious, and I hope that his quite busy job is to do most of your work 😄 !LOLZ

I hope that it will never happen my friend, as the darkness makes people very moody and nasty 😮

Cheers and thanks.

The war in the Ukraine and Covid have resulted in these things, in this fear of blackouts. We are buying all sorts of things to prepare and generators which will only cause more and more costs because you have to maintain them even when you don't use them.
I think it's all just a huge business and not only our government are stupid enough to believe ... most countries are doing the same and all the involved companies have a big smile on their face 😁 !LOLZ

My hope is that being a while in darkness would be able to change the people, to earth them again, but you might be right, it would also bring out people's dark side.

Oh yes, now is the time to invest in the diesel companies, as they are getting astronomical returns. We are paying billions here to keep the generators running and the servicing companies are also coining it.
The tax payers have to pay for it all 😛 !LOLZ

From the dark to the dark my friend, as the struggles affect everyone negatively. So the people all turn sour 😮

Cheers and thanks.

I am always too late for investments, and so I don't make any. Remember the year 2015 when the migration to Europe started? Well, back then I should have invested in mobile toilets. Why? You have no idea how much Austria has spent alone in renting mobile toilets in the first years 😂 !LOLZ

Actually I like to be in darkness, not in a cave though, but as a boy I loved to take night walks.

Hope you're having a wonderful weekend, my friend 😊🌞

Same here and the only thing that I have invested in is a good pair of shoes. We call those toilets Sputniks and I suppose that you can imagine why 😛 !LOLZ

Later we have changed the European style toilets for the ones where you don't need to sit 😉

I know but turn off the light and it's dark, at least at night 😁

Since last Wednesday I'm having pain in my right shoulder - can hardly lift my right hand. That's why I haven't been much online. It's a bit better today, but I still can't drive a car. Luckily my wife and I are working together ☺️

It's an inflammation in the shoulder and it's getting better from day to day. A while ago I fell on this shoulder while walking down a steep forest. Maybe that was the cause, I have no idea.
Yesterday I even drove a car again - it was an automatic though, no need to shift gears 🤣

Thanks for the link, I will have a look at it later.

Wishing you an awesome day my friend 😊🌞

Okay, that's a relief to see that you fell on the shoulder and that the inflammation does not originate from any other cause. I was worried that it might be something more serious.
Great to drive an automatic as then you can drive with your left hand and exercise your right hand by scratching in your nose 🤣 !LOLZ
