At last! I got him in flight.

I am talking about the speedy Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), as I could always only get him on camera in a seating position. So, for a long time it was my challenge to get it in flight.
053 (2).JPG

Beautiful isn't he? This is the bird that holds the world record for the fastest dive of all birds, at +300 kph.

The birds in this post are all indigent in South Africa and as far as I know, they don't migrate to warmer countries during the winter. The peregrine's flight is dashing and direct, and they hunt from the mountains in our area. Snakes, rodents, and other small animals are what they feed on, and they are great pest hunters.
Then I also have some Jackal Buzzards, in the post to show you.
So, come and see.

Although I only got three pictures of him, you can believe that I was very happy to get even one picture of him in flight.
063.JPG

And then he was gone, but this I know, I now don't have to dream about getting him in flight anymore.
088.JPG

There were also another three customers in the air. They were all Jackal Buzzards (Buteo rufofuscus).

I saw them coming in far away and they soon split up.
300.JPG

So, I got each one separately as they flew in different directions. Number 1 gave me the best show and below are 3 photos of him.
318.JPG

323.JPG

330.JPG

Here was number 2 that flew towards the north.
328.JPG

And finally number 3 flew in a north-westerly direction.
321.JPG

I so often say that every day is not the same, and in this area it is so true. As on some days, there are none of these birds to be found anywhere, and one can, on those days, only concentrate on small birds and other interesting stuff in nature. On other days, like this day, there is a surfeit of birds out hunting. I know what causes this, as we are having a lot of rainy days, and after the rains the birds need to eat, so the predators know that, and they also know that there is now new small spring life around, so the food is plentiful.
For instance, last week we saw a yellow-billed duck with six tiny ducklings, but yesterday there were only two of the little ones left. All of the rest taken by predators.
Such is life.

I hope you have enjoyed the story and the pictures.

And That's All Friends.

absolutely majestic! Seeing birds in flight is one of my most favorite things. My opinion around keeping birds is relatively unpopular, but I just don't get why you would take something that has the God-given gift to fly, clip its wings, and keep it in a cage.

Thank you for the appreciation, and I totally agree with you.
That's why we never visit zoos or pet shops that sell birds and other creatures. However, we do visit the NPO's that rehabilitate wild birds and animals and then set them free.

Birds eye-view from above to collect up food below, winds appear right conditions at the moment to fill the wings then dive.

Well done one aerial photography, quite an art form capturing them when on the move.

Oh yeah, you are right and if the Peregrine doesn't like the winds he climbs further up in the sky, above the winds. They have terrific eyesight, and he can see a rat from miles up in the sky.

They call it panning. I wondered what it was when I heard the word panning, but then I learned that one has to swing the camera very carefully to try and match the bird's speed before clicking.

Thank you and I got this one today but cannot find it in our books. The tail flares like a buzzard, or a falcon, but it was too small to be one of them and the open wings also looks very different.

I hope that your Sunday was also good and we wish you all strength for the new week.

African Goshawk has a shorter tail, darker upperparts, and a clean white throat. - https://ebird.org/species/afrgos1

Possible with the markings identification, found throughout all along coastal belt.

!LOLZ a beauty non the less.

Nope, this one has a clear white throat and white speckles on a black chest. Might be a juvenile of some shorts, but or Birds of Prey book features nothing like this one.
Thank you for the link and I have posted the Goshawk before,

Got two Kestrels fighting with a Peregrine in the air today.
This was a Peregrine hit on one of the Kestrels.

!LOLZ and love the beauties.

Birds of prey sometimes very difficult to ID using only coloration witnessed from below, could be juvenile as you say.

Skies much busier down your way with mountains close, awesome watching them in action!

Totally agreed as it is indeed very difficult. The sunlight also doesn't make the ID any easier.
I saw that ecency struggles to load photos, as I wanted to show you some of the busy skies here, but there's always a next time.

I seldom use Ecency find it does not work efficiently always, hit and miss so I stick with PeakD mostly.

I do all of my posting in PeakD and I use Ecency for the other stuff. When ecency is out, then I do all in PeakD.

Eventually only go into Ecency occasionally with power outages I don't need additional frustration.

Oh yeah, thank you. There was only one Peregrine as you saw, and the three Buzzards also made the show. They are indeed beautiful, and thank you for agreeing with me.
Happy that you liked it.

Thank you for the congrats and I am thankful to catch him in flight at last.
I have a few photos of the Peregrine, but he was always seated.

Such a wonderful bird! Great job

All days ain't the same.....I'm glad you could study this particular bird well, knowing the time and seasons it comes around. But,I thought they could adapt to any environment when trained. I love falconry, they're fast, strong and have great senses.

Wow +300kph is an amazing one. Thanks so much for sharing, your shot are always enchanting.

Thank you and I hope that this one will never lose his freedom. The Peregrines are very special birds and it was great for me to get one in flight.

Yep, the speeds at which they dive ca take one's breath away and try as I might, I cannot get one in a dive as they are too fast.
