Hola querido hiver.

La mayoría de las ermitas y santuarios repartidos por territorio español tienen un origen común. Supuestamente un pastor o un agricultor, siempre alguien de origen humilde, descubre una imagen de la Virgen o recibe su visita. Esta era una forma de asentar la fe católica, unificando así las creencias de la población y aumentando el poder de la Iglesia.

Este Santuario de la Virgen de Rodanas no es una excepción. Permanece como testigo de una tradición que comenzó en el siglo XVI y que aún perdura.

Estamos dentro del término municipal de Épila, a 16 kilómetros de su casco urbano. El acceso es por una carretera bien asfaltada y señalizada, ahora en obras. Una vez cogemos el desvío no tendremos dudas de cuándo hemos llegado al destino, ya que el santuario es la única construcción de la zona.

Junto al aparcamiento nos recibe un pequeño porche que hace las veces de puerta al recinto. Tras pasar los arcos encontraremos un parque bien habilitado como merendero con zonas al aire libre y bajo techo. Al final desembocamos en una amplia plaza en forma de U con una fuente central como único adorno.

La última vez que había estado aquí fue de niña en una excursión del colegio. Por entonces el suelo de la plaza era de tierra y piedras y los edificios estaban bastante deteriorados. Me gustó mucho ver cómo los han recuperado y adecentado.

Donde no recuerdo haber entrado hasta este día era en la pequeña ermita dedicada a la Virgen de Rodanas. Es un templo de pequeñas dimensiones, pero suficientes para albergar detalles con encanto y sencillas obras de arte tanto antiguas como modernas. Todas tienen en común que son ofrendas de gente de la zona, quizás no tengan valor económico pero sí sentimental.

Encontré una pintura al fresco que me recordó al Ecce Homo de Borja, una pintura que fue mal restaurada y que se hizo viral hace años. Tengo pendiente ir a verlo in situ.

Me llamó la atención que el espacio habilitado para las ofrendas de velas. Ahora no es común que se permita encender velas en la mayoría de las iglesias, para prevenir incendios y el deterioro de los templos.

Fui recogiendo las capillas laterales hasta alcanzar la zona del altar, que permanece cerrado y tiene rejas en los tres lados. Como elemento destacable son los espacios con bancos a la altura del altar y separados de él por la reja. El altar en sí es bastante sencillo y solo alberga la figura de la Virgen de Rodanas como pieza a venerar.

A ambos lados del altar destacan sendas hileras de sillas talladas en madera con aspecto antiguo. Un par de cuadros sencillos completan los adornos de este espacio central.

Terminé de rodear el altar y al tomar la fotografía del coro me di cuenta de que había una galería superior con celosías de madera. Esto da muestra de que estamos en una zona que tuvo gran importancia económica, no es una simple ermita.

Nuevamente en el exterior, observé el resto de edificios. La casa con una galería es la casa parroquial. La que tiene un reloj de sol en la fachada era la casa del santero, y frente a ella todo ese brazo lateral era una hospedería. No pude entrar en ninguno de ellos, así que en este punto di por finalizada esta visita.

Hi, dear hiver.

Most of the chapels and shrines scattered throughout Spain have a common origin. Supposedly, a shepherd or farmer, always someone of humble origins, discovers an image of the Virgin Mary or receives a visit from her. This was a way of establishing the Catholic faith, thus unifying the beliefs of the population and increasing the power of the Church.

This Sanctuary of the Virgin of Rodanas is no exception. It remains a witness to a tradition that began in the 16th century and still continues today.

We are within the municipal boundaries of Épila, 16 kilometres from the town centre. Access is via a well-paved and signposted road, currently under construction. Once we take the turn-off, there is no doubt about when we have reached our destination, as the sanctuary is the only building in the area.

Next to the car park, we are greeted by a small porch that serves as the entrance to the grounds. After passing through the arches, we find a well-equipped park with outdoor and indoor picnic areas. At the end, we come to a large U-shaped square with a central fountain as its only decoration.

The last time I had been here was as a child on a school trip. At that time, the ground in the square was dirt and stones, and the buildings were quite dilapidated. I really liked seeing how they have been restored and refurbished.

Where I don't remember having been until today was the small chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Rodanas. It is a small temple, but large enough to house charming details and simple works of art, both ancient and modern. What they all have in common is that they are offerings from local people; they may not have economic value, but they do have sentimental value.

I found a fresco that reminded me of Borja's Ecce Homo, a painting that was poorly restored and went viral years ago. I still have to go see it in person.

I was struck by the space set aside for candle offerings. Nowadays, it is not common for candles to be allowed in most churches, to prevent fires and damage to the buildings.

I made my way through the side chapels until I reached the altar area, which remains closed and has railings on three sides. A notable feature are the spaces with benches at the height of the altar, separated from it by the railing. The altar itself is quite simple and only houses the figure of the Virgin of Rodanas as an object of worship.

On either side of the altar are rows of antique-style carved wooden chairs. A pair of simple paintings complete the décor of this central space.

I finished walking around the altar and, as I took a photograph of the choir, I noticed that there was an upper gallery with wooden latticework. This shows that we are in an area that was of great economic importance; it is not just a simple chapel.

Back outside, I looked at the rest of the buildings. The house with a gallery is the parish house. The one with a sundial on the façade was the santero's house, and opposite it, the entire side wing was a guesthouse. I couldn't go inside any of them, so I ended my visit at this point.
