Paseo entre olivos y carrascas // Walk among olive trees and holm oaks

Hola querido hiver.

El Santuario de Rodanas, además de tener valor patrimonial, cultural e identitario, es un punto de inicio de rutas de senderismo variadas y aptas para todo tipo de personas. El día que hicimos nuestra visita al santuario aprovechamos para recorrer el sencillo sendero que comparto hoy aquí.

El disfrute de la naturaleza no está reñido con las nuevas tecnologías. El ayuntamiento de Épila, término municipal en el que estamos, proporciona todas las rutas que podemos realizar mediante unos QR que se pueden escanear. Como ves, tenemos hasta 20 diferentes a elegir. Lo único que eché de menos fue que además del nombre indicaran la distancia a recorrer y el nivel de dificultad de cada ruta.

Yo me había informado previamente, así que no necesitamos descargar nada porque allí mismo estaba el panel informativo. También era evidente el inicio del sendero, donde un par de piedras de molino hacían las veces de umbral a un camino que discurre en medio de un extenso olivar.

Los olivos son espectaculares. Según el cartel informativo se estima que pueden llegar a tener casi un milenio de vida. Sus troncos así lo atestiguan, retorciéndose la corteza como si de arrugas en la piel se tratase. Impacta pararse a pensar cuántas generaciones han sacado provecho de sus frutos, cómo se aprecia que de las bases nuevas continúan emergiendo ramas nuevas perpetuando la especie.

Dimos este paseo el último día de agosto, por lo que las aceitunas estaban en pleno proceso de crecimiento. Es España son miles y lies las hectáreas que se cultivan en busca de su aprovechamiento. Tanto es así, que al aceite que se produce lo llamamos oro líquido, pues así parece por su color.

En el suelo la vegetación estaba muy seca y entre ella surgían bonitos ejemplares de cardos, tan frecuentes en la cuenca mediterránea. Me gusta mucho cuando se secan por completo, sus flores asemejan soles arrojando rayos de luz.

Solo queda avanzar un poco más y llegamos hasta nuestro destino, la carrasca centenaria. Hay varios ejemplares en Aragón pero este es el primero que veo en persona. Si bien es cierto que es grande e impresiona, como he pasado muchos veranos en la dehesa extremeña estoy acostumbrada al magnífico porte de esta especie. Aunque entiendo que en esta zona no es tan frecuente y por eso les dan tanto valor. Puedes hacerte una idea comparándola con el tamaño de mi marido, que mide casi 1.90 m de estatura y no podía abarcar con sus brazos su tronco.

Desde este punto se abría una gran extensión de monte bajo que permitía admirar el verde del paisaje de alrededor. Se acercaba el mediodía y la densa sombra de la carrasca nos protegiera del calor. Gracias a ella permanecimos un rato disfrutando del aire y capturando detalles para fotografiar.

Estoy casi segura de que la carrasca recibe con frecuencia la visita de jabalíes, pues me costó bastante encontrar alguna bellota seca en el suelo. Ante mi frustración, pasé a fijarme en la corteza del tronco de la carrasca, tan diferente a la de los olivos.

Desandamos el camino pero todavía nos quedaba una sorpresa final. En lugar de ir directos al coche lo hicimos rodeando el santuario por la parte externa y justo al otro extremo nos salió al paso un estanque con simpáticos pobladores. Patos y gansos se acercaban a la valla en busca de comida que no necesitaban, pues tenían trozos de pan que ya les habían proporcionado otros paseantes.

Desde allí se ve un extenso pinar que cubre toda esa parte del monte y que atravesamos hasta alcanzar la carretera que nos llevó hasta allí, cuyo paisaje semidesértico es muy diferente.

Hi, dear hiver.

The Rodanas Sanctuary, in addition to its heritage, cultural and identity value, is the starting point for a variety of hiking trails suitable for all types of people. On the day we visited the sanctuary, we took the opportunity to walk the easy trail that I am sharing here today.

Enjoying nature is not incompatible with new technologies. The council of Épila, the municipality where we are, provides all the routes we can take via QR codes that can be scanned. As you can see, we have up to 20 different ones to choose from. The only thing I missed was that, in addition to the name, they indicated the distance to be covered and the level of difficulty of each route.

I had checked beforehand, so we didn't need to download anything because the information panel was right there. The start of the trail was also obvious, where a couple of millstones served as a threshold to a path that runs through a large olive grove.

The olive trees are spectacular. According to the information sign, it is estimated that they can live for almost a thousand years. Their trunks bear witness to this, their bark twisted as if it were wrinkled skin. It is striking to stop and think about how many generations have benefited from their fruit, how new branches continue to emerge from the new bases, perpetuating the species.

We took this walk on the last day of August, so the olives were in the middle of their growing season. In Spain, thousands of hectares are cultivated for olive production. So much so that we call the oil produced “liquid gold” because of its colour.

The vegetation on the ground was very dry, and among it were beautiful specimens of thistles, so common in the Mediterranean basin. I really like it when they dry out completely; their flowers resemble suns casting rays of light.

Just a little further on and we reach our destination, the centuries-old holm oak. There are several examples in Aragon, but this is the first one I have seen in person. Although it is large and impressive, having spent many summers in the Extremaduran pastures, I am used to the magnificent stature of this species. However, I understand that it is not so common in this area, which is why it is so highly valued. You can get an idea of its size by comparing it to my husband, who is almost 1.90 m tall and could not wrap his arms around its trunk.

From this point, a large expanse of scrubland opened up, allowing us to admire the green landscape around us. It was approaching midday and the dense shade of the holm oak protected us from the heat. Thanks to it, we stayed for a while enjoying the air and capturing details to photograph.

I am almost certain that the holm oak is frequently visited by wild boars, as I had a hard time finding any dry acorns on the ground. Frustrated, I turned my attention to the bark of the kermes oak trunk, which is so different from that of olive trees.

We retraced our steps, but there was still one final surprise in store for us. Instead of going straight to the car, we walked around the outside of the sanctuary, and at the other end we came across a pond with some friendly inhabitants. Ducks and geese approached the fence in search of food they didn't need, as they already had pieces of bread that other walkers had given them.

From there, you can see an extensive pine forest covering that entire part of the mountain, which we crossed until we reached the road that brought us there, whose semi-desert landscape is very different.
