Hola querido hiver.

Ahora que las tiendas y supermercados se llenan de productos para ~~que consumamos~~ celebrar Halloween, te voy a mostrar un lugar peculiar que no me gustaría visitar en esa noche, aunque reconozco que es un destino ideal para los fanáticos de la Noche de los Muertos.

La Casa de Dios es difícil de definir. Se trata de una obra realizada por Julio Basanta, un artista autodidacta que dedicó varios años de su vida a crear estas esculturas en un terreno algo alejado del casco urbano de Épila, cerca de Zaragoza.

Adornando el exterior de una casa de campo encontramos esculturas de demonios, brujas, figuras bíblicas, alegorías inimaginables. Lo que es seguro es que no deja indiferente a quien pase por delante de ellas.

Las figuras están realizadas con elementos de construcción, pues parece ser que era a lo que Julio Basanta se dedicaba, así como de objetos reciclados. Las formas finales vienen dadas por una capa de cemento recubierta de pintura. La lástima es que el sitio se ve abandonado y el deterioro del conjunto es evidente.

Por lo que he podido averiguar, Basanta falleció en 2018. Hasta entonces era él mismo quien salía al encuentro de quien por allí pasaba y les explicaba que su inspiración vino como forma de sublimar su dolor por la pérdida de un hermano y de un hijo. Y vaya si lo consiguió reflejar. Si ya estremece de día, no me quiero imaginar visitarlo en la oscuridad de la noche.

Todo lo que aparece en el exterior nos remite a la muerte, tanto en sentido religioso como pagano. Escenas de la crucifixión, muertos que se levantan de sus ataúdes, la figura del apóstol traidor, demonios.

En cambio, la parte interior del muro de la finca, en su parte visible, recrea figuras menos tétricas. Eso sí, todo nos lleva a pensar en un aspecto defensivo, como si Basanta quisiera impedir que más tragedias aterrizasen en su hogar. Ya había sufrido bastante. De hecho, él llamaba a su casa "mis castillos".

Tres años después del fallecimiento de Julio Basanta la casa fue vendida. El comprador tenía la intención de convertirla en una residencia para artistas. De ese modo se aseguraba el mantenimiento del legado de su creador. Imagino que los adornos de una pequeña zona (foto sobre estas líneas) habilitada para el descanso son de ese tiempo. Pero algo debió pasar, porque en los últimos tiempos el deterioro se ha acelerado y parece abandonada.

La Casa de Dios está considerada como uno de los mejores paisajes artísticos del mundo por una experta internacional en arte en bruto. El arte es emoción y aquí la encontramos a raudales.

Now that shops and supermarkets are filling up with products for us to consume celebrate Halloween, I'm going to show you a peculiar place that I wouldn't want to visit on that night, although I admit that it's an ideal destination for fans of the Night of the Dead.

The House of God is difficult to define. It is a work by Julio Basanta, a self-taught artist who devoted several years of his life to creating these sculptures on a piece of land some distance from the town centre of Épila, near Zaragoza.

Adorning the exterior of a country house are sculptures of demons, witches, biblical figures, and unimaginable allegories. One thing is certain: they leave no one who passes by indifferent.

The figures are made from building materials, as this appears to have been Julio Basanta's profession, as well as recycled objects. The final shapes are created by applying a layer of cement covered with paint. Unfortunately, the site appears to have been abandoned and the deterioration of the complex is evident.

From what I have been able to ascertain, Basanta passed away in 2018. Until then, he himself would go out to meet passers-by and explain that his inspiration came as a way of sublimating his pain at the loss of a brother and a son. And boy, did he manage to reflect that. If it is already unsettling during the day, I cannot imagine visiting it in the darkness of night.

Everything on the exterior refers to death, both in a religious and pagan sense. Scenes of the crucifixion, dead people rising from their coffins, the figure of the traitor apostle, demons.

In contrast, the visible part of the interior wall of the estate recreates less gloomy figures. However, everything leads us to think of a defensive aspect, as if Basanta wanted to prevent further tragedies from befalling his home. He had already suffered enough. In fact, he called his home “my little castles”.

Three years after Julio Basanta's death, the house was sold. The buyer intended to convert it into a residence for artists. This would ensure that the legacy of its creator would be preserved. I imagine that the decorations in a small area (photo above) set aside for relaxation date from that time. But something must have happened, because in recent times the deterioration has accelerated and seems abandoned.

The House of God is considered one of the world's finest artistic landscapes by an international expert in outsider art. Art is emotion, and here we find it in abundance.
