La pasada semana se celebraron en mi ciudad las fiestas patronales en honor a la Virgen del Pilar. Te presenté al Tragachicos de Zaragoza, un simpático personaje que hace las delicias de los niños y sus papás y que recorre los barrios para que todos tengan la oportunidad de acercarse a él.

En esta ocasión, traigo fotografías de lo que todos buscan cada 13 de octubre, la imagen de la Virgen del Pilar coronando una impresionante pirámide de flores.

El 12 de octubre los zaragozanos, desde hace décadas, le llevan como ofrenda flores a su patrona. Con el tiempo esta costumbre se ha extendido. Ahora son miles las personas que se acercan desde todos los rincones de España e incluso desde fuera de ella para dejar sus ramos a los pies de la Virgen.

La figura que vemos mide más de tres metros de altura, apoyada sobre una estructura de más de 40 toneladas de peso. Es un despliegue diseñado por el director de cine Bigas Luna, quien se encargó de realzar la imagen y facilitar la retransmisión del acto principal de las fiestas de Zaragoza.

El manto floral que ves tiene 55 m de profundidad, 18 de anchura y más de 15 metros de alto. Pero si las dimensiones son por sí solas impresionantes, no te puedo describir con palabras lo que supone estar ahí al lado, contemplando esta muestra de fervor religioso y de tradición y aspirando el aroma de esos millones de flores de todos los colores imaginables.

En la ofrenda pueden participar tanto personas individuales como agrupaciones de cualquier clase y condición. Este año se calcula que pasaron unas 350.000 personas.

Según los medios de comunicación, este año la pirámide se ha llenado de unos 7 millones de flores. Como curiosidad te cuento que desde hace unos años se alternan los colores blanco y rojo para el manto principal de la Virgen.

En el caso de las agrupaciones suelen aportar al margen de los ramos otro tipo de arreglos florales como cestas o logotipos formados con flores. Estos que ves ahí son ejemplos. Empezaron siendo solo escudos de los pueblos, pero lamentablemente para mi gusto cada año se ve más propaganda de empresas.

Cada año se invita a un país latinoamericano como protagonista de la ofrenda, como una forma de celebrar que la Virgen del Pilar es la patrona de la Hispanidad. Este año le ha correspondido a Paraguay, por eso ves su bandera en mitad del manto de flores.

Las flores se mantienen por unos cuantos días. Dependiendo del tiempo que haga suelen ser cuatro o cinco días, tampoco más porque entonces empieza a oler a cementerio... Así que todos nos damos prisa por hacer las fotografías de recuerdo de rigor.

Por este año he cumplido con la tradición. Una vez más, le pedí salud para volver al año que viene.

Last week my city celebrated the patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen del Pilar. I introduced you to the Tragachicos de Zaragoza, a friendly character who delights children and their parents and who travels around the neighbourhoods so that everyone has the opportunity to get close to him.

On this occasion, I bring pictures of what everyone is looking for every 13th October, the image of the Virgen del Pilar crowning an impressive pyramid of flowers.

For decades, on 12 October, the people of Zaragoza have been bringing flowers to their patron saint as an offering. Over time this custom has spread. Now thousands of people come from all corners of Spain and even from abroad to lay their bouquets at the feet of the Virgin.

The figure we see is more than three metres high, resting on a structure weighing more than 40 tonnes. It is a display designed by the film director Bigas Luna, who was in charge of enhancing the image and facilitating the broadcasting of the main event of the Zaragoza festivities.

The floral mantle you see is 55 m deep, 18 m wide and more than 15 m high. But if the dimensions alone are impressive, I cannot describe in words what it is like to be next to it, contemplating this display of religious fervour and tradition and inhaling the scent of those millions of flowers of every imaginable colour.

Both individuals and groups of all kinds and conditions can take part in the offering. This year an estimated 350,000 people passed through.

According to the media, this year the pyramid was filled with about 7 million flowers. As a curiosity, the colours white and red have been alternating for the main mantle of the Virgin for some years now.

In the case of the groupings, apart from the bouquets, they usually provide other types of floral arrangements such as baskets or logos formed with flowers. These that you see here are examples. They started out as just village coats of arms, but unfortunately, for my taste, every year we see more and more advertising for companies.

Every year a Latin American country is invited to be the protagonist of the offering, as a way of celebrating the fact that the Virgen del Pilar is the patron saint of the Hispanic world. This year it was Paraguay's turn, which is why you see its flag in the middle of the blanket of flowers.

The flowers are kept for a few days. Depending on the weather it is usually four or five days, but no longer than that because then it starts to smell like a cemetery... So we all hurry to take the usual souvenir photographs.

For this year I have kept the tradition. Once again, I asked her for health to come back next year.
