Hola querido hiver.

Hace una semana compartí contigo una procesión alegre que se celebraba en mi barrio con motivo del Domingo de Ramos. Hoy le toca el turno a la otra cara de la moneda, uno de los actos más solemnes que se celebran en la ciudad en la que nací y vivo.

La Semana Santa de Zaragoza es una fiesta declarada de Interés Turístico Internacional. Por este motivo cada año son más las personas que se acercan a conocerla aprovechando los días de descanso. Sus 700 de historia garantizan que la tradición ha conservado la mayor parte de su esencia y significado.





La Procesión del Santo Entierro se celebra cada Viernes Santo representando un vía crucis en movimiento. Cada cofradía representa y porta las imágenes correspondientes a uno de los momentos importantes de la Pasión y Muerte de Jesucristo, según los Evangelios. Esto es importante, porque si conoces la cronología de los hechos puedes saber qué cofradías están por venir o han pasado ya.





Casi todas presentan elementos comunes, como los estandartes, los faroles y las cruces In Memoriam, en las que por detrás se añade una pequeña chapa grabada con el nombre de los hermanos cofrades que han fallecido. Las más antiguas y numerosas llegan a tener hasta tres cruces de este tipo.





Los pasos con las imágenes son transportados por plataformas con ruedas, a hombros o a costal. Este último es el método más duro para los portadores y el que ha hecho famosa la Semana Santa de Sevilla. Las tallas son de gran belleza y tienen valor sentimental, económico y artístico. Son el bien más preciado de las cofradías y por esta razón las protegen como pueden cuando las condiciones meteorológicas son adversas.





Otros elementos comunes son las imágenes de la Virgen Dolorosa en distintas versiones y significados. Ellas y los pasos principales son escoltados por mujeres de luto, vestidas de negro y con la tradicional mantilla española y un rosario en las manos. Se conocen como manolas.

Además de ellas, suelen ir personas cercanas a la cofradía con vestimenta normal. Estas van reduciendo su número año a año, se nota que la juventud o se aleja de la religión o se acerca a las cofradías para tocar los instrumentos.





Me gusta ver esta procesión en las calles más estrechas. No se forman grandes aglomeraciones, ya que el recorrido es muy largo, y se pueden apreciar los detalles desde escasa distancia.

Como la duración es de unas tres horas, conforme pasa el tiempo comienzan a encenderse los faroles y en esos minutos el ambiente que se forma es realmente mágico.





Algunas perspectivas son de una belleza plástica que, si le añades el significado de la imagen que las protagoniza, pueden llegar a emocionar incluso en momentos en que reina el silencio.

¿Ves las dos fotografías de la derecha? Corresponden al mismo paso, desde delante y desde atrás. Por cierto, para mi gusto es el más espectacular de todos los que componen esta procesión. Representa el Descendimiento de Jesús de la cruz, combina las tallas con la tela del sudario en un delicado equilibrio que parece que vaya a romperse en cualquier instante. De cerca impresiona.





En determinados lugares se logran preciosas estampas, gracias a la luz y el entorno. El cimborrio mudéjar de la fotografía de la izquierda y la portada y torre de la superior derecha corresponden a la gran desconocida Catedral de la Seo. Es muchísimo más bonita que la Basílica del Pilar en cuanto a decoraciones y elementos artísticos. Si algún día pasas por Zaragoza, no te la pierdas porque merece la pena.

Termino destacando la última fotografía con el Cristo yacente, conocido como la cama. Es una figura muy querida en la ciudad porque se salvó de ser destruida durante los Sitios que Zaragoza sufrió en 1808 y 1809 por el ejército francés. El lugar en el que se conservaba entonces fue pasto de las llamas.

A week ago I shared with you a joyful procession that took place in my neighbourhood on Palm Sunday. Today it is the turn of the other side of the coin, one of the most solemn events celebrated in the city where I was born and where I live.

Easter Week in Zaragoza is a festival declared to be of International Tourist Interest. That's why every year more and more people come to see it, taking advantage of the days off. Its 700 years of history guarantee that the tradition has preserved much of its essence and meaning.





The Procession of the Holy Burial is held every Good Friday and represents a moving Stations of the Cross. Each brotherhood represents and carries the images corresponding to one of the important moments of the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ, according to the Gospels. This is important, because if you know the chronology of the events, you can find out which brotherhoods are coming or have already passed.

Almost all of them have common elements, such as the banners, lanterns and the crosses In Memoriam, on the back of which a small engraved plate is added with the name of the brotherhood members who have died. The oldest and most numerous have up to three such crosses.





The floats with the images are carried on wheeled platforms, on the shoulders or by sack. The latter is the hardest method for the bearers and the one that has made Seville's Holy Week famous. The carvings are of great beauty and have sentimental, economic and artistic value. They are the brotherhoods' most precious asset and for this reason they protect them as best they can when the weather conditions are adverse.





Other common elements are the images of the Sorrowful Virgin in different versions and meanings. They and the main floats are escorted by women in mourning, dressed in black and with the traditional Spanish mantilla and a rosary in their hands. They are known as manolas.

In addition to them, there are usually people close to the brotherhood in normal dress. Their number is decreasing year by year, it is noticeable that young people are either moving away from religion or approaching the brotherhoods to play the instruments.





I like to see this procession in the narrower streets. There are no large crowds, as the route is very long, and you can appreciate the details from a short distance.

As the procession lasts about three hours, as time goes by the lanterns start to switch on and in those minutes the atmosphere is truly magical.





Some perspectives are of a plastic beauty that, if you add the meaning of the image in them, can be moving even in moments when silence reigns.

Do you see the two photographs on the right? They correspond to the same step, from the front and from the back. Incidentally, for my taste it is the most spectacular of all those that make up this procession. It represents the Descent of Jesus from the Cross, combining the carvings with the cloth of the shroud in a delicate balance that looks as if it might break at any moment. Up close it is impressive.





In certain places, thanks to the light and the setting, beautiful pictures can be made. The Mudejar dome in the photograph on the left and the doorway and tower on the upper right are from the largely unknown Cathedral of La Seo. It is much more beautiful than the Basílica del Pilar in terms of decorations and artistic elements. If you ever pass through Zaragoza, don't miss it because it is well worth a visit.

I finish by highlighting the last photograph with the recumbent Christ, known as the bed. It is a much loved figure in the city because it was saved from being destroyed during the Sieges that Zaragoza suffered in 1808 and 1809 by the French army. The place where it was kept at the time was burnt to the ground.
