During our winter vacations we decided to take a nice family trip to Puerto Madryn to enjoy and share time and adventures with our daughters, which is very difficult to do during school time. Every year I set aside a week of my vacation to spend with my family during the winter break.

Although I know Puerto Madryn very well, because I have spent several summers at my cousins' house, the idea of this trip was not only to take our youngest daughter to see this wonderful place, but also to visit several places in the area that I had never visited before.

The province of Chubut, located in our wonderful Patagonia, has a distinctive feature that differentiates it from other provinces and that is its great Welsh influence.

En nuestras vacaciones de invierno decidimos emprender un lindo viaje familiar hacia Puerto Madryn para poder disfrutar y compartir tiempo y aventuras con nuestras hijas, lo cual es muy difícil de lograr en tiempos de escuela. Todos los años me reservo una semana de mis vacaciones para compartir en familia durante el receso invernal.

Si bien Puerto Madryn lo conozco mucho, porque he pasado varios veranos en casa de mis primos, la idea de este viaje era no solo llevar a conocer a nuestra hija menor este maravilloso lugar, sino también aprovechar para recorrer varios sitios de la zona que nunca había visitado.

La provincia de Chubut situada en nuestra maravillosa Patagonia, tiene un rasgo distintivo que la diferencia de las demás provincias y es su gran influencia galesa.

In 1865, several Welsh families disembarked on the shores of Golfo Nuevo, more precisely in Puerto Madryn, in search of a place to start their lives again far from the cold North Atlantic.

Those Welsh who initially settled on the coast quickly moved towards the interior of the province following the course of the Chubut River, moving through several areas until they reached the mountain range.

One of the cities that received a great Welsh influence is the small town of Gaiman, a small and very picturesque town located about 130 kilometers from the city of Puerto Madryn.

This small town was visited by Lady Di, every time she came to visit the country. She loved to have tea in a beautiful ranch located in a privileged place, where the landscape offered an extremely beautiful and quiet environment, where she felt at home.

En el año 1865 desembarcaron en costas del Golfo Nuevo, más precisamente en Puerto Madryn varias familias de galeses que venían en búsqueda de un lugar en donde comenzar nuevamente sus vidas alejados del frío Atlántico Norte.

Esos galeses que en un principio se asentaron sobre el sector costero rápidamente se fueron trasladando hacia el interior de la provincia siguiendo el cause del Río Chubut, desplazándose por varias zonas hasta llegar a la cordillera.

Una de las ciudades que recibió una gran influencia galesa es la pequeña localidad de Gaiman, un pequeño y muy pintoresco pueblo situado a unos 130 kilómetros de la ciudad de Puerto Madryn.

Este pequeño pueblo era visitado por Lady Di, cada vez que venía de visitas al país. Ella adoraba tomar el té en una hermosa estancia situada en un lugar privilegiado, donde el paisaje brindaba un entorno sumamente bello y tranquilo, en donde ella se sentía como en su propia casa.

Little by little and thanks to the Princess of Wales Lady Di, Gaiman began to become very famous despite being a very, very, very small town located in the middle of the Argentine Patagonia.

My first impression when I arrived at the little town, which will have about five thousand stable inhabitants and I must confess that at first it did not meet my expectations. I had in mind to find another place, but as I started touring it I could appreciate the place and especially its history and its people. That was how my perception of the place began to change.

As soon as we entered Gaiman we took a short walk and went to the tourist office to learn about the most relevant tourist attractions and after visiting two of the attractions we started looking for a place to have lunch.

Poco a poco y gracias a las visitas de la princesa de Gales Lady Di, Gaiman comenzó a hacerse conocido a pesar de ser un pueblo, muy, pero muy pequeño situado en medio de la Patagonia Argentina.

Mi primera impresión al llegar al pueblito que tendrá unos cinco mil habitantes estables no fue de las mejores; en un primer momento no cubrió mis expectativas. Tenía en mente encontrarme con otro lugar, pero al tiempo que comencé a recorrerlo pude apreciar el valor del lugar y sobre todo su historia y su gente. Fue así como mi percepción del lugar comenzó a cambiar.

Ni bien ingresamos a Gaiman dimos un pequeño paseo y fuimos a la oficina de turismo interiorizarnos sobre los puntos turísticos más relevantes y después recorrer dos de los atractivos comenzamos a buscar un sitio para almorzar.

The first of the walks was through the railway tunnel, a true emblem of the town where in the three hundred meters long tunnel, we found several luminous plates that tell the history of the Railroad in Patagonia. The immensity of the work can only be taken dimension of the immensity of the work if one knows in person the Patagonia.

Although this region of our country is beautiful and very extensive, the reality is that it is an arid and extremely inhospitable region, which is why it is very sparsely populated, especially along the coast and towards the center of the provinces. As one gets closer to the mountain range, one can find more towns and more infrastructure development.

It is when one sees it from that perspective (taking into account the context), that one can have a real notion of what this tunnel meant for the time and give value to what one can observe.

El primero de los paseos fue por el túnel ferroviario, un verdadero emblema del pueblo donde en los trescientos metros de longitud que mide el túnel, encontramos varias láminas luminosas donde cuentan la historia del Ferrocarril en la Patagonia. Solo se podrá tomar dimensión de la inmensidad de la obra si uno conoce en persona la Patagonia.

Si bien esta región de nuestro país es hermosa y muy extensa, la realidad es que es una región árida, y sumamente inhóspita, por ello que está muy poco poblada, especialmente en su parte de la costa y hacia el centro de las provincias. Ya a medida que uno se va acercando a la cordillera podemos encontrar más pueblos y más desarrollo de infraestructura.

Es cuando uno lo ve desde esa perspectiva (teniendo en cuenta el contexto), que se puede a tener una real noción de lo que este túnel significó para la época y darle valor a lo que uno puede observar.

At the end of our visit to the railway tunnel we went to walk along the path of the Welsh, a wild place from where you can see almost the entire city of Gaiman with signs indicating the most important landmarks of the town.

Al finalizar nuestra visita al túnel ferroviario fuimos a recorrer el sendero de los galeses, un sitio agreste y desde donde puede verse prácticamente toda la ciudad de Gaiman con carteles indicativos de las referencias más importantes del pueblo.

After a short search we found a nice little bar with a wonderful atmosphere that helped us to get to know part of the history of the town and its people, which made us feel much more at ease.

The service at the bar was very good and the food was spectacular, at a very good price. For about $8,400 Argentinean pesos (approximately U$S16) my wife, my daughters and I had lunch with drinks included.

I think the best thing about the place was the hospitality and the treatment of the owners with whom I spent some time chatting to find out how people live in Gaiman, if it is a city with tourism all year round and other questions that came to my mind while I was there.

The owner, a quite young guy, about thirty years old, talked to me in a very cordial way and made me understand that the lifestyle is different in these places, where it seems that everything happens in slow motion.

A poco de buscar encontramos un lindo barcito ambientado de una manera maravillosa que nos ayudo a conocer parte de la historia del pueblo y de su gente, lo cual no hizo sentirnos mucho más a gusto.

La atención en el bar fue muy buena y la comida espectacular, a muy buen precio. Por unos $8.400 argentinos (aproximadamente U$S16) almorzamos mi esposa, mis hijas y yo con bebida incluida.

Creo que lo mejor del lugar fue la hospitalidad y el trato de los dueños con quién me dediqué a conversar para conocer como se vive en Gaiman, si es una ciudad con turismo todo el año y demás interrogantes que estando allí vinieron a mi mente.

El dueño, un chico bastante joven, de unos treinta años, conversó conmigo de una manera muy cordial y me hizo entender que es otro el estilo de vida que se lleva en estos lugares, donde parecería que todo transcurre en cámara lenta.

I think one of the reasons why I was disappointed at first, when I started with the talk at the tourist office, was to learn that the famous tea house, where Lady Di used to visit when she visited our country, had closed in pandemic and had been sold, so it could no longer be visited. When the town of Gaiman was named, one associated it directly with Lady Di.

Nevertheless, I am extremely happy to have known another small corner of my country that has so many places to visit, full of history of work, sacrifice and so much greatness.

Visiting our Patagonia is always wonderful and every centimeter you walk around you will find something to marvel at, to contemplate and to never stop being moved.

Creo que una de las causas por las cuales me decepcioné en un primer momento, al comenzar con la charla en la oficina de turismo, fue enterarme que la famosa casa de té, donde Lady Di solía visitar cuando visitaba en nuestro país, había cerrado en pandemia y había sido vendida, por lo cual ya no podía visitarse. Uno cuando le nombraban el pueblo de Gaiman, lo asociaba directamente con Lady Dí.

A pesar de ello estoy sumamente feliz de haber conocido otro pequeño rincón de mi país que tiene tantos lugares para recorrer y visitar, cargados de historia de trabajo, de sacrificio y de tanta grandeza.

Visitar nuestra Patagonia siempre es maravilloso y cada centímetro que uno recorre encuentra algo para maravillarse, para contemplar y para no dejar de emocionarse.
