The Cerukcuk White-rumped Shama, the Guardian of Nature in Aceh
The Cerukcuk White-rumped Shama (Pycnonotus goiavier) is known by the people of Aceh as a bird very familiar with village life. Almost every morning, its chirping accompanies farmers as they go to the fields. This bird is very easy to find because it is not picky about its habitat—from bushes, gardens, to yards, it can all be a haven.
In everyday life, the Cerukcuk White-rumped Shama is not just a natural decoration. It also plays a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem. Its diet of fruit and small insects helps disperse plant seeds and control pests. For this reason, farmers in Aceh greatly appreciate its presence.
But behind its melodious chirp, the Cerukcuk is a wary bird. It quickly recognizes unfamiliar sounds, and if it senses danger, such as a snake or a bird of prey, it will call loudly to warn other birds. Often, other birds will join in, and together they will chase away intruders from their territory.
When dusk falls, Merbah Cerukcuk returns to its nest hidden in dense bushes or in tree gaps. He sleeps peacefully, saving energy for the next day which will again be full of chirping and activities to maintain the balance of nature.
Cerukcuk is not just an ordinary bird. In Aceh, it is a part of life — small, but plays a big role.
