In my shady and cool yard, a special coconut tree grows. Acehnese people usually call it Ivory coconut because its golden yellow color resembles elephant tusks. This tree is not only a yard sweetener, but also part of a heartwarming life story.
I planted this Kelapa Gading with my father several years ago next to the house. At first, it was just a small stick that looked fragile. But as time passed, the rain and sun alternately gave him strength. Now, it grows tall, showing off beautiful and dense yellow fruit like in this photo.
The fruit is not only beautiful, but also incredibly fresh. Whenever guests or family gather, the Gading coconut is the main dish the water is sweet and the flesh is soft. We usually pick them in the morning, cut them open while sitting cross-legged on the terrace, enjoying the cool breeze and laughter together.
Kelapa Gading is not just an ordinary tree in our yard. It is a childhood memory, a silent witness to togetherness, and a symbol of the fertility of the land of Aceh that we love. Behind its hard yellow skin, lies a sweetness that unites families.
And that is why, in many homes in Aceh, the Gading coconut is still planted behind or beside the house. Not only to be enjoyed, but to be inherited.
