A Walk in the Park

The spirit of carnival is already in the air throughout the city; shops and stores display costumes, masks, rolls of streamers, and packets of confetti in their windows, waiting for shoppers who are getting ready to go to the various fairs, raffles, promenades, and boulevards. Official bodies have their floats ready and are preparing to choose their queens who will preside over the carnival celebrations.

Un Paseo Por El Parque

Ya en toda la ciudad se sienten los aires del carnaval; las tiendas y comercios muestran en sus vitrinas disfraces, máscaras, los rollos de serpentinas y los paquetes de papelillos esperan por los compradores que se disponen a ir a las diferentes ferias, tómbolas, paseos y bulevares. Los entes oficiales tienen listas sus carrozas y se disponen a elegir sus reinas que presidirán las fiestas carnestolendas.

I decided to swap the excitement and hustle and bustle typical of this time of year for a more peaceful and relaxing stroll through Los Caobos Park. I started my walk just beyond the park entrance. The weather seemed perfect for a walk, not too hot and partly cloudy. There weren't many people in the park; perhaps they were getting ready for other destinations such as the beach, rivers, and mountains.

Yo decidí cambiar el entusiasmo y la algarabía propios de la época por un paseo más tranquilo y reconfortante por el parque Los Caobos. Empecé mi caminata un poco más allá de la entrada del parque. El clima parecía el indicado para una caminata, sin tanto calor y parcialmente nublado. Se notaba poca afluencia de personas en el parque; quizás se preparaban para otros destinos como la playa, los ríos y montañas.

Leafy trees, with their different shades of green, flanked the paths, recreating a peaceful atmosphere conducive to walking or reading. Although I walked very close to the avenue, not even the noise of cars and motorcycles could disturb the tranquility; in fact, the singing of thousands of birds sometimes managed to drown out the noises typical of a city like Caracas.

Frondosos árboles, con sus diferentes tonalidades de verde, flanqueaban las caminerías, recreando un ambiente de tranquilidad propicio para un paseo o la lectura. A pesar de que mi recorrido lo realicé muy cerca de la avenida, ni el ruido de los autos y motos lograba perturbar la tranquilidad; es más, el canto de miles de pájaros, en ocasiones, lograba silenciar estos ruidos propios de una ciudad como Caracas.

I am nearing the end of my walk; I am close to Plaza Venezuela and the traffic is becoming more noticeable. The walk helped me to dispel, to a large extent, the anxieties that arise in a society like ours; it also helped me to tone my legs and breathe some fresh air. I recommend taking this type of walk through the parks of this city; at the end of the walk, you will feel a sense of tranquility that will generate greater empathy towards others.

Ya me acerco al final de mi recorrido; estoy cerca de Plaza Venezuela y el tránsito automotor se hace más evidente. El paseo me sirvió para diluir, en buena medida, ansiedades que se generan en una sociedad como la nuestra; además, me sirvió para tonificar mis piernas y respirar un poco de aire fresco. Recomiendo realizar este tipo de caminata por los parques de esta ciudad; sentirán que, al final del recorrido, una tranquilidad que generará una mayor empatía hacia los demás.
