Armored friends at Uncle "Pichi's" house / Amigos acorazados en casa del tío "Pichi"
,

Greetings, my dear friends of #amanzingnature, today I want to show you these fascinating turtles (Chelonoidis carbonarius) which, according to their history, come from the North of South America. I have visited my Uncle "Pichi" and he has been able to tell me about these cute armored friends. They grow to about 13 to 16 inches, have yellow or red legs.
The difference between males and females varies according to their carapace.
Females have a flat area on the underside of their carapace.

Males have a wavy curvature on the lower part of their carapace, in order to be able to mount the female more easily.

They are omnivorous, feeding on almost any plant within their reach, as well as fruits, some vegetables, mushrooms, carrion, among others.
This species of turtle has been threatened due to its excessive capture for food or breeding. Possibly, its extinction will happen with the passing of the years, being the human being and some other predators the cause of such threat.
Apart from humans, its main predator is the jaguar, which bites its shell until it breaks and has access to the soft tissues, which are a rich source of food that provide a lot of vitamins for its formation and growth.

According to my uncle "Pichi", these turtles mate in the season of April and May for approximately 150 days.
In the act of mating the male usually hits the female with his hard shell to show her that he is hard, this process is done several times, then the male mounts on the female being on two legs in the back, then the male makes a very peculiar noise with his head and at the same time generates a squeak.
After a few days, the female manages to make a hole of approximately 30 centimeters in which she lays 8 to 15 eggs. Depending on the fertility of the females, the eggs measure 3 to 5 centimeters in diameter. These eggs last from 2 to 3 months for their young to hatch, the hatchlings break the eggs with the so-called egg tooth. They lose it during this process without being able to recover it.

I have been able to get close to each of these beautiful turtles and feed them, I was able to see about 10, but my uncle says he has more turtles. He started with about 4, but they have been able to reproduce satisfactorily, only some of them because they are so small have escaped through the fence, another number of them have been given to people close to the family. The big ones are about 35 years old and the small ones about 10 years old. I am surprised that these armored friends can last a long time. They usually feed on their environment and that makes them great specimens of nature. I managed to bring some fruits and vegetables for them to eat, they really like lettuce. I really enjoyed seeing these wonderful turtles and even more to know that they are in good hands.
