Vila Real - Sé Catedral - Igreja S. Domingos / Riding Portugal

I continue here showing our tour that began in a relaxed way, through the calm streets of the historic center of Vila Real. As is customary in small towns, the sound of bells began to resonate in the air, something that in itself creates a special atmosphere. We decided to follow the sound and that's how, without any great plans, we ended up discovering the Cathedral Church of São Domingos.

Continuo aqui a mostrar nosso passeio que começou de forma descontraída, pelas calmas ruas do centro histórico de Vila Real. Como é habitual nas pequenas cidades, o som dos sinos começou a ressoar no ar, algo que, por si só, já cria uma atmosfera especial. Decidimos seguir o som e foi assim que, sem grandes planos, acabámos por descobrir a Sé Catedral Igreja de São Domingos.

When we arrived at the church door, the surprise was immediate. The sound of the bells was imposing, but what really caught our attention was the serene and welcoming atmosphere that emanates from the building. Mass was in full swing, and inside, a crowd of faithful had gathered. What particularly touched us was seeing a group of children, catechism students, sitting in the front rows, listening attentively to the priest's homily. The Church of São Domingos was the scene of a moment of great religious significance for that community.

Quando chegámos à porta da igreja, a surpresa foi imediata. O som dos sinos era imponente, mas o que realmente nos chamou a atenção foi o ambiente sereno e acolhedor que emana do edifício. A missa estava em pleno decorrer, e no interior, uma multidão de fiéis estava reunida. O que nos tocou particularmente foi ver um grupo de crianças, alunos da catequese, sentados nas primeiras filas, a ouvir atentamente a homilia do padre. A Igreja de São Domingos estava a ser o palco de um momento de grande significado religioso para aquela comunidade.

The church, with its imposing architecture, dates back to centuries past and is one of Vila Real's historical landmarks. It was founded in the 16th century, on the initiative of Dominican friars, and over the years it has undergone several modifications and restorations, always maintaining its essence. The church's façade is elegant, with elements reminiscent of the Renaissance, but it is inside that its full grandeur is revealed. The main altar, for example, is a true work of art, with its gold details and paintings that represent key moments in the Christian faith. The building is also a place of great importance for the residents of Vila Real, being the center of several religious celebrations, such as Sunday mass, Christmas and Easter celebrations.

A igreja, com a sua arquitetura imponente, remonta a séculos passados, sendo um dos marcos históricos de Vila Real. Foi fundada no século XVI, por iniciativa dos frades dominicanos, e ao longo dos anos sofreu diversas modificações e restauros, mantendo sempre a sua essência. A fachada da igreja é elegante, com elementos que fazem recordar o Renascimento, mas é no interior que se revela toda a sua grandiosidade. O altar-mor, por exemplo, é uma verdadeira obra de arte, com os seus detalhes em ouro e as pinturas que representam momentos chave da fé cristã. O edifício é também um local de grande importância para os habitantes de Vila Real, sendo o centro de várias celebrações religiosas, como a missa do domingo, as festas de Natal e da Páscoa.

As we were visiting the church during mass, we decided not to take photos to respect the environment and spirituality of the moment. Meanwhile, as we watched, we were warmly welcomed by a lady who, seeing our interest, began to share some stories about the church. She told us that in ancient times, the faithful used to gather there to pray and ask for protection, especially during the most difficult times, such as those preceding great wars or when the city was ravaged by epidemics. The lady also spoke to us fondly about a tradition that continues to this day: every year, on the feast of Saint Dominic, the community gathers for a great celebration, which includes a procession through the streets of Vila Real.

Como estávamos a visitar a igreja durante a missa, decidimos não tirar fotografias para respeitar o ambiente e a espiritualidade do momento. Entretanto, enquanto observávamos, fomos acolhidos com simpatia por uma senhora que, vendo o nosso interesse, começou a partilhar algumas histórias sobre a igreja. Ela contou-nos que, nos tempos antigos, os fiéis costumavam reunir-se ali para rezar e pedir proteção, especialmente durante as épocas mais difíceis, como as que precederam as grandes guerras ou quando a cidade era assolada por epidemias. A senhora ainda nos falou com carinho de uma tradição que se mantém até hoje: todos os anos, na festa de São Domingos, a comunidade se reúne para uma grande celebração, que inclui uma procissão pelas ruas de Vila Real.

What really made us smile, though, was a little episode during our visit. While I was talking to the lady, someone bumped into us, almost making us fall. There was a boy in catechism who was so excited about what was happening around him that he completely forgot to look where he was going. He, all flustered, apologized and immediately asked: "Do you want to know how the Pope speaks?" We were all silent for a moment, until he, with a big smile, began to imitate a priest, using a deep and solemn voice, saying: "My children, pay attention to the word of God!" It was a scene that made us smile and laugh, because of its spontaneity.

O que realmente nos fez sorrir, no entanto, foi um pequeno episódio durante a nossa visita. Enquanto estava a conversar com a senhora, alguém esbarrou-se connosco, quase nos fazendo cair. Era um menino da catequese, que estava tão empolgado com o que se passava à sua volta, que se esqueceu completamente de olhar para onde andava. Ele, todo atrapalhado, pediu desculpa e, de imediato, perguntou: "A senhora quer saber como é que o Papa fala?" Ficamos todos em silêncio por um momento, até que ele, com um grande sorriso, começou a imitar um padre, fazendo uma voz profunda e solene, dizendo: "Meus filhos, estejam atentos à palavra de Deus!" Foi uma cena que nos fez sorrir e rir, pela sua espontaneidade.

When the mass ended, the group of catechists led the children out of the church. The light filtering through the windows, illuminating the ancient stones, gave the environment an even more magical air. We watched the way the faithful said goodbye to each other, as if the church were a second home, a refuge of peace and faith. The feeling of tranquility that existed there was contagious.
Before we left, we took one last look at the church and its interior. It is not just a tourist attraction, but a place where the history, spirituality and memories of Vila Real come together.
The Church of São Domingos gave us the feeling that the city had revealed one of its most beautiful and authentic facets, and made us want to return, perhaps another afternoon, to stroll through its streets again, to the sound of the bells ringing.

Quando a missa terminou, o grupo de catequistas guiou as crianças para fora da igreja. A luz que se filtrava pelas janelas, iluminando as pedras antigas, dava um ar ainda mais mágico ao ambiente. Ficámos a observar o modo como os fiéis se despediam uns dos outros, como se a igreja fosse uma segunda casa, um refúgio de paz e de fé. A sensação de tranquilidade que ali se vivia era contagiante.
Antes de sairmos, demos uma última olhada à igreja e ao seu interior. Não é apenas um ponto turístico, mas um local onde a história, a espiritualidade e as memórias de Vila Real se unem.
A Igreja de São Domingos deu-nos a sensação de que a cidade nos tinha revelado uma das suas facetas mais bonitas e autênticas, e com a vontade de voltar, quem sabe, noutra tarde, para passear novamente pelas suas ruas, ao som dos sinos a tocar.
