Vila Nova Foz Côa - City Center / Riding Portugal

Returning to Vila Nova de Foz Côa was a strange experience from the very first minutes. The only memories I had of that place came from childhood, already quite blurry, almost reduced to small, isolated images without much context. And perhaps that's why the initial impact was precisely that. Everything seemed smaller than what I had stored in my head.

Voltar a Vila Nova de Foz Côa foi uma experiência estranha logo desde os primeiros minutos. As únicas memórias que tinha daquele lugar vinham da infância, já muito desfocadas, quase reduzidas a pequenas imagens soltas sem grande contexto. E talvez por isso o impacto inicial tenha sido precisamente esse. Tudo me pareceu mais pequeno do que aquilo que tinha guardado na cabeça.

But this often happens when we return to places linked to childhood. When we are small, spaces grow disproportionately with us. The streets seem enormous, the buildings imposing, the distances endless. Then we return years later and realize that memory also exaggerates dimensions.

Mas isso acontece muitas vezes quando regressamos a sítios ligados à infância. Quando somos pequenos, os espaços crescem connosco de forma desproporcional. As ruas parecem enormes, os edifícios imponentes, as distâncias intermináveis. Depois voltamos anos mais tarde e percebemos que a memória também exagera dimensões.

Even so, Vila Nova de Foz Côa maintains its personality. It's noticeable that much has changed over the years. There are more modern buildings and interventions that, in certain points, clash somewhat with the traditional architecture of the village. There are recent facades that are too neutral, urban solutions that are more functional than beautiful. Not everything fits together. But that's not enough to erase the character of the historic center.

Ainda assim, Vila Nova de Foz Côa mantém a sua personalidade. Nota-se que muita coisa mudou ao longo dos anos. Existem edifícios e intervenções mais modernas que, em certos pontos, destoam um pouco da arquitetura tradicional da vila. Há fachadas recentes demasiado neutras, soluções urbanas mais funcionais do que bonitas. Nem tudo encaixa. Mas isso não chega para apagar o carácter do centro histórico.

It was precisely there that I began to recognize things. First, the Parish Church of Vila Nova de Foz Côa; just seeing it immediately brought a familiar feeling that's hard to explain. Not a concrete memory, but a kind of automatic recognition. The light-colored facade, the tower, and that square in front brought me a lot of nostalgia.

Foi precisamente aí que comecei a reconhecer coisas. Primeiro a Igreja Matriz de Vila Nova de Foz Côa, bastou vê-la para surgir imediatamente uma sensação familiar difícil de explicar. Não uma memória concreta, mas uma espécie de reconhecimento automático. A fachada clara, a torre e aquela praça em frente trouxeram-me muita nostalgia.

I stood there for a while, observing the movement and remembering. People crossing the square slowly, short conversations near cafes, cars passing by in their routine. The atmosphere was calm, and that hasn't changed practically since my childhood.

Fiquei algum tempo ali parada a observar o movimento e a recordar. Pessoas a atravessar a praça devagar, conversas curtas junto aos cafés, carros a passar na sua rotina. O ambiente era calmo, e esse não mudou praticamente nada desde os meus tempos de infância.

The pillory of Foz Côa was another element I recognized immediately. I can't explain exactly why, but I have vague memories of running around it in some kind of game—I don't remember which one—or perhaps because certain images remain stored somewhere in memory even when everything else disappears.

O Pelourinho de Foz Côa foi outro elemento que reconheci imediatamente, não sei explicar exatamente porquê, mas tenho memórias vagas de correr à volta dele numa espécie de jogo, não me recordo qual, ou talvez porque certas imagens ficam guardadas em algum lugar da memória mesmo quando tudo o resto desaparece.

Further on, the 19th-century Town Hall building continues to visually dominate part of the historic area. I particularly liked the contrast between that more classic architecture and the simplicity of some adjacent streets. In certain places, the weight of local history is clearly felt. In others, one perceives an attempt to adapt to modern times that is not always very elegant.

Mais adiante, o edifício oitocentista da Câmara Municipal continua a dominar visualmente parte da zona histórica. Gostei particularmente do contraste entre aquela arquitetura mais clássica e a simplicidade de algumas ruas adjacentes. Em certos pontos sente-se claramente o peso da história local. Noutros, percebe-se uma tentativa de adaptação aos tempos atuais nem sempre muito elegante.

The smell of the heat mingled with the aroma coming from nearby cafes and restaurants. There was also that typical silence of inland villages during the afternoon, interrupted only by footsteps, doors opening, or more distant voices.

O cheiro do calor misturava-se com o aroma vindo de cafés e restaurantes próximos. Havia também aquele silêncio típico das vilas do interior durante a tarde, interrompido apenas por passos, portas a abrir ou vozes mais distantes.

I sat on a bench for a few minutes and tried to understand to what extent those memories were real or reconstructed by nostalgia itself. I didn't reach any conclusion, but it wasn't important either.
What I felt was simpler to explain. Although she recognized parts of the place, she was clearly seeing it for the first time as an adult. And that completely changed the experience.

Sentei-me num banco durante alguns minutos e fiquei a tentar perceber até que ponto aquelas memórias eram reais ou reconstruídas pela própria nostalgia. Não cheguei a conclusão nenhuma, mas também não era importante.
O que senti foi mais simples de explicar. Apesar de reconhecer partes do lugar, estava claramente a vê-lo pela primeira vez enquanto adulta. E isso mudou completamente a experiência.

It was a partial, incomplete reunion, but enough to realize that some connections remain even when almost all the details disappear.
