Vila Nova Famalicão - Mosteiro do Arnoso / Riding Portugal

After weeks marked by successive storms that caused chaos throughout the country and that constant feeling that winter wouldn't let up, the sun finally appeared, even if only briefly, peeking through the still-heavy clouds, and without wasting much time we left home and took a trip to Vila Nova de Famalicão, almost instinctively. Even if only for a moment, in Portugal, when the sky clears like that, you don't think twice. You leave home.

Depois de semanas marcadas por tempestades sucessivas que causaram o caos um pouco por todo o território nacional e aquela sensação constante de que o inverno não dava tréguas, o sol finalmente apareceu, mesmo que por breves instantes, a espreitar pelo meio de nuvens ainda carregadas, e sem perder muito tempo saímos de casa e demos um salto até Vila Nova de Famalicão, quase que por instinto. Nem que seja só por um instante, em Portugal, quando o céu abre assim, não se pensa duas vezes. Sai-se de casa.

The truth is that it has been difficult to plan anything because the rain has dictated the rules and the desire to explore has been postponed several times, without much surprise because the forecasts were unfortunately accurate. So this time there wasn't much strategy, just the simple decision to enjoy the moment and see where the road took us.

A verdade é que tem sido difícil planear o que quer que seja pois a chuva tem ditado as regras e a vontade de explorar ficou várias vezes adiada, sem grandes surpresas pois as previsões infelizmente foram certeiras. Por isso, desta vez não houve grande estratégia, apenas a decisão simples de aproveitar o momento e ver onde a estrada nos levava.

The landscape was intensely green, in some places even too lush. The fields saturated with water, the stone walls still damp and gushing with excess water that leaps onto the road and continues its path without much resistance, the fresh air with that smell of wet earth that is only felt after several days of intense rain. There was a kind of renewed silence in the environment, and it was contemplating this scenery that we continued until we reached the Monastery of Arnoso, an isolated place far from the city center.

A paisagem estava intensamente verde, em alguns locais até estava exuberante demais. Os campos saturados pela água, os muros de pedra ainda húmidos e a jorrar a água em excesso que salta para a estrava e segue caminho sem grandes resistências, o ar fresco com aquele cheiro a terra molhada que só se sente depois de dias seguidos de chuva intensa. Havia uma espécie de silêncio renovado no ambiente, e foi a contemplar esse cenário que seguimos até chegar ao Mosteiro de Arnoso, um local isolado e afastado do centro da cidade.

The monastery is still visible from the road, although it presents itself discreetly, camouflaged amidst the greenery, but in plain sight, rooted in the terrain. It was the first time I became aware of its existence, already in Vila Nova de Famalicão, when I was looking for a nearby place that would be a landmark to visit. Thus, the Monastery of São Salvador de Arnoso, built in the 11th century, came into my mind.
According to the results of my research on this building, the monastery is linked to important figures of the county period, such as D. Payo Vermudes and D. Gontrodo Mendes. At that time, Portuguese territory was still establishing itself, and this space was more than just religious; it represented influence, status, and social organization.

O mosteiro é visível ainda da estrada, embora se apresente de forma discreta, camuflado no meio do verde, mas à vista, enraizado no terreno. Foi a primeira vez que tomei conhecimento da sua existência, já em Vila nova de Famalicão, quando procurava por um local ali perto que fosse uma referência para visitar. Assim surgiu o Mosteiro de São Salvador de Arnoso, construído no século XI.
Segundo o resultado da minha pesquisa sobre este edifício, o mosteiro está ligado a figuras importantes do período condal, como D. Payo Vermudes e D. Gontrodo Mendes. Naquele tempo, o território português ainda se estava a afirmar, e este espaço era mais do que religioso pois representava influência, estatuto e organização social.

The robust architecture clearly reveals the spirit of the Romanesque style, with typical thick walls, round arches, and simple, restrained decoration. Its construction doesn't seem intended to impress through detail. The imposing nature comes from its simplicity and solidity, with stone dominating everything and conveying a sense of resilience.

A arquitetura robusta revela bem o espírito do românico, com as típicas paredes espessas, arcos de volta perfeita e decoração simples e contida. A sua construção não parece ter a intenção de querer impressionar pelo detalhe. A imponência vem da simplicidade e da solidez, com a pedra a dominar tudo e a transmitir uma sensação de resiliência.

We went outside to stretch our legs, and while walking around the monastery and taking some photos, I appreciated some details that weren't perceptible from a distance, such as the sculpted capitals, the side doors, and the balanced proportions of the building. Over the centuries, the monastery underwent periods of transformation and decline, especially after the extinction of religious orders in the 19th century, something that had an impact not only on this one but on many other monasteries and castles that we have had the opportunity to visit and share here. Some were truly abandoned, but this one, in a way, managed to resist. And this resistance is felt in the walls, in the texture of the stone, and in the silence that envelops the space.

Saímos para esticar as pernas e enquanto dávamos a volta ao redor do mosteiro e enquanto tirava umas fotos, fui apreciando alguns detalhes que não eram perceptíveis à distância, como os capitéis esculpidos, as portas laterais, as proporções equilibradas da construção. Ao longo dos séculos, o mosteiro atravessou períodos de transformação e também de declínio, especialmente após a extinção das ordens religiosas no século XIX, algo que teve um impacto não só neste, mas como em muitos outros mosteiros e castelos que já tivemos a oportunidade de visitar e partilhar por aqui, tendo alguns ficado mesmo ao abandono, mas este de certa forma conseguiu resistir. E essa resistência sente-se nas paredes, na textura da pedra e no silêncio que envolve o espaço.

This wasn't the initial plan for the day, because in truth there was no plan at all, since the intention was simply to enjoy the sun. But it ended up being an unlikely encounter with a fragment of medieval Portugal, and as expected, since we insist that it be so most of the time when we go out to explore a new place, far from large urban centers and saturated tourist routes :) and once again we found a peaceful place with history.

Não era este o plano inicial para o dia, até porque na verdade não havia qualquer plano, uma vez que a intenção era apenas aproveitar o sol. Mas acabou por ser um encontro improvável com um fragmento do Portugal medieval, e como seria de esperar, até porque fazemos questão que assim seja na maior parte das vezes que saímos para explorar um local novo, longe de grandes centros urbanos e de roteiros turísticos saturados :) e mais uma vez encontramos um local tranquilo e com história.

Since these moments of discovery and decompression aren't just about taking photos, we stayed there for a while enjoying the sun and breathing in the breeze that ran through the fields. With the sky finally clear above, it became evident that going out to discover doesn't always mean crossing distant borders or searching for iconic monuments. Sometimes, it's enough to leave home when the weather permits and let the path and the destination surprise you. Between gray weeks and successive storms, this day brought a well-deserved break.

Como estes momentos de descoberta e descompressão não se fazem só de fotos, ficamos por ali um tempinho a aproveitar o sol e a respirar a brisa que corria pelos campos, com o céu finalmente limpo por cima, tornou-se evidente que sair para descobrir nem sempre significa atravessar fronteiras longínquas ou procurar monumentos icónicos. Às vezes basta sair de casa quando o tempo permite e deixar que o caminho e o destino surpreendam. Entre semanas cinzentas e tempestades sucessivas, este dia trouxe uma pausa merecida.

The monastery has stood there for almost a thousand years, indifferent to modern atmospheric depressions and the hurried pace of present-day life. Perhaps that is the greatest lesson of the place. There is a quiet strength in things that remain. And sometimes all it takes is an unexpected sunny day to discover them.

O mosteiro permanece ali há quase mil anos, indiferente às depressões atmosféricas modernas e ao ritmo apressado dos dias atuais. Talvez seja essa a maior lição do lugar. Há uma força tranquila nas coisas que permanecem. E, por vezes, tudo o que é preciso é um dia de sol inesperado para as descobrir.
