Valongo - Zona Verde - Passadiço da Ilha / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

We woke up early but the sun was already shining in the cloudless sky and the temperature was perfect for a walk. We decided to take advantage of the morning to explore another of Valongo's walks, this time a route that crosses agricultural fields and offers incredible views over the mountains. We grabbed our backpack, water and camera and off we went.

Acordamos cedo mas o sol já brilhava no céu sem nuvens e a temperatura estava perfeita para uma caminhada. Decidimos aproveitar a manhã para explorar mais um dos passadiços de Valongo, desta vez um percurso que atravessa campos agrícolas e oferece uma vista incrível sobre a serra. Pegamos na mochila, agua e a máquina e lá fomos.

The starting point was at the city park. In the first few meters, I came across some residents who were tending to their plantations. An elderly gentleman, wearing a cap and holding a hoe, waved with a friendly smile. “It’s a beautiful morning for a walk!” he said, as he arranged some lettuce heads in the bed. We responded with a wave and continued, absorbing the best that nature had to offer.

O ponto de partida foi no parque da cidade. Logo nos primeiros metros, cruzei-me com alguns moradores que tratavam das suas plantações. Um senhor idoso, de boné e enxada na mão, acenou com um sorriso simpático. “Está uma linda manhã para caminhar!”, disse ele, enquanto ajeitava uns pés de alface no canteiro. Respondemos com um aceno e continuamos, absorvendo o que a natureza de melhor nos oferecia.

Along the way, we saw several well-kept vegetable gardens, some with improvised scarecrows, and even small greenhouses. Further ahead, a small flock of sheep grazed peacefully in a meadow next to the boardwalk.

Ao longo do percurso, vimos várias hortas bem cuidadas, algumas com espantalhos improvisados, e até pequenas estufas. Mais adiante, um pequeno rebanho de ovelhas pastava tranquilamente num prado ao lado do passadiço.

The path climbs slightly, revealing a spectacular view of the valley. It’s impossible not to stop and admire the landscape. From there, we could see the city in the distance, nestled between the mountains and, further down, the fields we had just crossed. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a few seconds, just to absorb that moment of tranquility.

O caminho faz uma ligeira subida, revelando uma vista espetacular sobre o vale. Impossível não parar para admirar a paisagem. Dali, conseguíamos ver a cidade ao longe, encaixada entre as montanhas e mais abaixo, os campos que acabáramos de atravessar. Respirei fundo e fechei os olhos por uns segundos, apenas para absorver aquele momento de tranquilidade.

It was then that something unexpected happened! As I resumed my walk, I felt a slight tremor on the sidewalk and, before I could react, a chicken came flying out of the bushes! The scare was so great that I almost jumped off the boardwalk. Behind her, a young man ran, probably the owner of the poor bird, who shouted in distress: “Amélia, come back here! Can’t you see there are people?!” The chicken, who clearly didn't care what name she was given, continued her fearless escape. The boy, out of breath, looked at me, shrugged his shoulders and, embarrassed, continued trying to recapture the fugitive. We continued on our way and laughed a lot. Fearless Amelia living her best morning adventure.

Foi então que algo inesperado aconteceu! Ao retomar a caminhada, senti um ligeiro tremor no passadiço e, antes que pudesse reagir, uma galinha surgiu disparada do meio dos arbustos! O susto foi tão grande que quase saltei para fora do passadiço. Atrás dela, corria um rapaz, provavelmente dono da pobre ave, que gritava aflito: “Amélia, volta aqui! Não vês que há gente?!” A galinha, que claramente não se importava com o nome que lhe tinham dado, continuou a sua fuga destemida. O rapaz, sem fôlego, olhou para mim, encolheu os ombros e, envergonhado, seguiu na tentativa de recapturar a fugitiva. Continuamos o caminho e rimos muito. A destemida Amélia a viver a sua melhor aventura matinal.

The last part of the route took me back to the city, closing the circular circuit. Upon reaching the end of the trail, we stopped at a small cafe for a well-deserved coffee and toast. As we enjoyed our late breakfast, I couldn't help but think about how Valongo has such delicious surprises. Between stunning landscapes, friendly people and even runaway chickens, every walk has a story to tell.

A última parte do percurso levou-me de volta à cidade, fechando o circuito circular. Ao chegar ao fim do trilho, paramos num pequeno café para um café e uma torrada bem merecidos. Enquanto saboreávamos o pequena almoço tardio, não pude deixar de pensar em como Valongo tem destas surpresas deliciosas. Entre paisagens deslumbrantes, pessoas simpáticas e até galinhas fugitivas, cada caminhada tem uma história para contar.
