After exploring the monastery and absorbing that healthy dose of medieval history, we thought the tour was over. Enjoyed the sun. But it only took walking a little further to realize that the day still held a surprise.
Right at the foot of the monastery there is a river beach. And not one of those makeshift beaches, with a patch of sand and little else. It's an organized, well-maintained space, surrounded by greenery and crossed by wooden walkways along the river. One of those places that, if you were in a large European city, would be full of people and viral videos. Here, it seemed almost like a local secret.

Depois de explorar o mosteiro e de absorver aquela dose saudável de história medieval, pensávamos que o passeio já estava feito. Sol aproveitado. Mas bastou andar um bocadinho mais para a frente para perceber que o dia ainda guardava uma surpresa.
Mesmo ao pé do mosteiro existe uma praia fluvial. E não uma daquelas praias improvisadas, com um pedaço de areia e pouco mais. É um espaço organizado, cuidado, rodeado de verde e atravessado por passadiços de madeira ao longo do rio. Um daqueles lugares que, se estivesse numa grande cidade europeia, estaria cheio de pessoas e vídeos virais. Aqui, parecia quase um segredo local.

We were completely unaware of this place. Zero prior research. Zero expectations. Perhaps that's why it was even better.
We started walking along the walkways without much hurry. The river flowed calmly beside us, reflecting the soft sunlight that finally decided to appear after weeks of persistent rain. Green was the most visible color. Dense trees, living grass, damp banks. The smell of wet earth could still be felt.

Desconhecíamos completamente este lugar. Zero pesquisa prévia. Zero expectativas. Talvez por isso tenha sabido ainda melhor.
Começámos a percorrer os passadiços sem grande pressa. O rio corria tranquilo ao nosso lado, refletindo a luz suave do sol que finalmente decidiu aparecer depois de semanas de chuva persistente. O verde era a cor que mais se via. Árvores densas, relva viva, margens húmidas. O cheiro a terra molhada ainda se podia sentir.

Walking there was like resuming an old habit, after so long without being able to do it. That simple pleasure of walking aimlessly, just because, without any hurry to get anywhere. It had been a long time since I'd taken a walk like that, just for the pleasure of walking.
As we moved forward, the space began to come alive. First, a couple on foot, having a relaxed chat. Then two cyclists passing by at a leisurely pace. Further ahead, someone walking their dog with that typical energy of someone who had also been stuck at home for too long because of the rain.

Caminhar ali foi como recuperar um hábito antigo, depois de tanto tempo sem o poder fazer. Aquele prazer simples de andar sem destino, só porque sim, sem pressa para chegar a lado nenhum. Há algum tempo que não fazia um percurso assim, só pelo prazer de caminhar.
À medida que avançávamos, o espaço começou a ganhar vida. Primeiro um casal a pé, em conversa descontraída. Depois dois ciclistas a passar num ritmo tranquilo. Mais à frente, alguém a passear o cão com aquela energia típica de quem também esteve fechado em casa demasiado tempo por causa da chuva.

Suddenly, the scene became even more lively. Children on scooters, discreetly competing to see who could go the fastest. A group playing ball in a wider area. Laughter, reminders from parents, that organized chaos that only happens when the good weather reappears and everyone decides to go out at the same time.
It ends up being impossible not to smile. We're not used to so many weeks of rain in a row. I couldn't remember spending a winter like this anymore.

De repente, o cenário ficou ainda mais animado. Crianças nas trotinetes, a competir discretamente para ver quem ia mais rápido. Um grupo a jogar à bola numa zona mais ampla. Risos, chamadas de atenção dos pais, aquela confusão organizada que só acontece quando o bom tempo reaparece e toda a gente decide sair ao mesmo tempo.
Acaba por ser impossível não sorrir. Não estamos habituados a tantas semanas de chuva seguidas. Já não me lembrava de passar um inverno assim.

Despite more people arriving, the atmosphere remained light. There was no excessive noise, nor that suffocating crowd feeling. There was space. There was air. There was a river.
The walkways help structure everything. They guide the route. They allow you to walk close to the water, cross small wooded areas, and observe the movement without disturbing the ecosystem. It's a simple detail, but it makes all the difference.

Apesar de haver mais pessoas a chegar, o ambiente manteve-se leve. Não havia barulho excessivo, nem aquela sensação de multidão sufocante. Havia espaço. Havia ar. Havia rio.
Os passadiços ajudam a estruturar tudo. Guiam o percurso. Permitem caminhar junto à água, atravessar pequenas zonas arborizadas e observar o movimento sem perturbar o ecossistema. É um detalhe simples, mas faz toda a diferença.

At a certain point I stopped, leaning against the wooden railing, looking at the reflection of the trees in the water. I thought about how many places like this go completely unnoticed. How many places like this exist to discover, even just a few kilometers from home?
We allowed a medieval monastery to lead us to an unexpected river beach. It's accepting that the best part of the day can happen after you think the trip is over.

A certa altura parei, encostada à guarda de madeira, a olhar para o reflexo das árvores na água. Pensei em quantos lugares como este passam completamente despercebidos. Quantos sítios assim existirão por descobrir, mesmo a poucos quilómetros de casa?
Permitimos que um mosteiro medieval nos levasse a uma praia fluvial inesperada. É aceitar que o melhor do dia pode acontecer depois de já se achar que o passeio terminou.

We found another small refuge. One of those places where it's easy to return. Maybe on a warmer day, maybe with time to sit with our feet in the water, or even by bicycle.
This day was a luxury. It was a privilege to be able to stroll in the sun amidst nature and see beautiful new places.

Encontramos mais um pequeno refúgio. Um daqueles lugares onde é fácil voltar. Talvez num dia mais quente, talvez com tempo para ficarmos sentados com os pés na água ou, até de bicicleta.
Este dia foi um luxo. Foi um privilégio poder passear ao sol no meio da natureza e ver lugares bonitos e novos.
