Porto City - Jardins Palácio de Cristal - Part 3 / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
As the walk through the Gardens drew to a close, I walked towards one of the highest points of the space, where the garden ceases to be just a garden and begins to function almost like a balcony overlooking the city. The atmosphere there changes somewhat. There is less constant movement, fewer children running around, less scattered noise. People slow down naturally, perhaps because the view forces them to, and so does the staircase.

From the top of the hill, the Douro River opens up completely. Down below, the city operates at a different speed. Cars crossing the bridges, people walking hurriedly along the banks, small gatherings near cafes and terraces. Everything is far enough away to lose its aggressiveness. From up there, even the traffic seems silent.

I spent a good amount of time leaning against the stone wall observing the river. Tourist boats went up and down slowly, crossing paths with smaller vessels. There was a strange sense of separation between the two rhythms. Up here, calm, and down there, urgency.

Perhaps this was the strongest point of the entire visit. Not because of the imposing view, although it is there, but because of the clear difference between observing the city and being inside it. There is a very specific tranquility in watching the movement without being part of it for a few minutes.

Here we also find the Chapel of Charles Albert, a discreet but quite striking building. The romantic cenotaph stands out more for its atmosphere than its size. There is something melancholic about the construction. Perhaps because of its more isolated location, perhaps because of the history associated with the exiled king who was honored there after his death.

There weren't many people near the chapel. Just a few people sitting on nearby benches and others passing slowly, almost always in silence. I liked that.
Further down, already nestled in the hillside, appears the Mirante da Torre da Marca viewpoint. There is a constant movement of people descending to it. There is almost an automatic impulse. To see the tower, to approach, to climb. Some take photos quickly, others take longer trying to find the best angle over the river and the bridges.

I ended up climbing too. The tower itself sparks curiosity precisely because it seems out of place. It's not grandiose, but it functions as a natural point of attraction. From up there, the perspective changes slightly. The river gains more detail, the boats become more present, and the people on the banks cease to be just small moving spots.
We returned to the first level. The space was still crowded, but less intensely than hours before. Some people were going home, others remained seated with all the calm in the world.

I left with the feeling of having spent an entire morning amidst different rhythms without ever truly leaving the same place. Between free-roaming animals, tourists, ancient trees, viewpoints, and brief pauses, the garden ended up functioning less as an attraction and more as a temporary refuge in a city full of life.
And perhaps that is precisely what continues to make it relevant. It doesn't force anyone to do anything in particular. It simply offers space to pause a little before returning to the noise down below.
PT
I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
