Porto City - Jardins Palácio de Cristal - Part 2 / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

I continued my stroll through the Crystal Palace Gardens almost without noticing the time passing. After descending one of the most wooded paths, we arrived at the back of the pavilion on a wide terrace where everything seemed to happen at once. The space was full. Not only of tourists with cell phones pointed everywhere, but also of city people, people who clearly knew the place and occupied it naturally. Some walked slowly, others read sitting on benches, some simply seeking shade.

And shade was plentiful. The trees there are enormous, ancient, with wide canopies that transform the environment. The sun remained strong, almost excessive for spring, but in that area it became bearable. The air circulated better and there was a feeling of freshness mixed with the smell of damp earth and dry leaves.

After a few minutes, we almost stopped being surprised by the presence of the birds. Pigeons everywhere, ducks crossing the paths without any hurry and, above all, peacocks. Many peacocks. Some walked among the people with impressive confidence, accustomed to human proximity. Others stayed further away, under the trees, almost motionless. There's something slightly absurd about crossing paths with a peacock while someone is having coffee on a bench or checking messages on their cell phone, but after a while it all starts to seem normal. Everything except for some ducks that chased us and quacked almost as if demanding food.

The space is very well maintained. The upkeep and care are noticeable, even by those who pass through. Along the way, small art installations and statues appear scattered among the vegetation, almost hidden in certain spots. Some work well because they appear unexpectedly, without needing to stand out. Others seem to just take up space. Even so, I liked the attempt to integrate art into a garden that already has enough life on its own.

Further on, the lake appeared. Large, tranquil, with reflections of the trees. Several birds were concentrated around it, mainly ducks and geese, scattered along the banks or simply motionless, observing those who passed by. It was just as we arrived that a duck plunged into the water, followed by its small, clumsy ducklings trying to keep up.

There was an almost immediate reaction all around. Children approached the shore, some people stopped talking, others raised their cell phones to film. And, for a few seconds, a very simple and genuine collective attention settled there. Effortlessly. Without acting, but full of tenderness for being able to witness that little moment.

I watched that small crossing of the lake for longer than I expected. The ducklings moved erratically, too fast for their size, while the mother moved forward with absolute tranquility. It was a banal scene, probably repeated dozens of times in that garden, but at that moment it worked. Perhaps because no one seemed to try to make it into something bigger than it was.

I sat near the water and just watched. The sound of the peacocks in the distance, the leaves moving slowly, the discreet noise of conversations scattered throughout the garden. The palace gardens, even when full, manage to create small spaces for pause.
We continued on, as there was still much more to see.

Sentei-me perto da água e fiquei apenas a olhar .

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
