Penafiel - Parque Natural de Quintandona / Riding Portugal

After walking through the illustrious Quintandona, the village slowly began to recede into the distance. The stone houses, low walls, and narrow streets gave way to a dirt path that descended the hillside. There was no clear signage or indication that this route led to any particular place. What guided us was only the sound of water, discreet but persistent, coming from somewhere deep within the grass and trees.

Depois de passar a caminhar pela ilustre Quintandona, a aldeia começou lentamente a ficar para trás. As casas de pedra, os muros baixos e as ruas estreitas deram lugar a um caminho de terra que descia pela encosta. Não era evidente a sinalização nem a indicação clara de que aquele percurso levava a algum lugar especial. O que nos guiava era apenas o som da água, discreto mas persistente, vindo algures lá do fundo do meio das ervas e das árvores.

We descended without great expectations; the terrain first opened up into a wider space, almost an abandoned field, with tall grass and the damp smell of earth mixed with the sandy texture of pine trees. The air there seemed different, fresher. The sound of the water became increasingly clear until, almost suddenly, we found a small, improvised bridge made of a few simple planks placed over the narrow course of a river that flowed calmly.

Descemos sem grandes expectativas, o terreno abriu-se primeiro num espaço mais amplo, quase um campo abandonado, com ervas altas e o cheiro húmido da terra misturado com aresina dos pinheiros. O ar ali parecia diferente, mais fresco. O som da água tornava-se cada vez mais nítido, até que, quase de repente, encontrámos uma pequena ponte improvisada com algumas tábuas simples colocadas sobre o curso estreito de um rio que corria com calma.

On the other side was a clearing.
It wasn't a place prepared for visitors. It was just a natural space that seemed to have been left alone for a long time. The river flowed down the mountainside, winding between rocks and exposed roots. Its banks were covered in dense bamboo canopies, leaning slightly over the water. Around them, tall pines and cork oaks created a kind of irregular canopy of branches and leaves, letting through only fragments of light.

Do outro lado havia uma clareira.
Não era um lugar preparado para visitantes. Era apenas um espaço natural que parecia ter sido deixado em paz durante muito tempo. O rio seguia o seu caminho pela serra abaixo, serpenteando entre pedras e raízes expostas. As margens estavam ocupadas por canas de bambu que cresciam de forma densa, inclinando-se ligeiramente sobre a água. À volta, pinheiros altos e sobreiros criavam uma espécie de teto irregular de ramos e folhas, deixando passar apenas fragmentos de luz.

The first thing I noticed was the silence. It wasn't a total absence of sound; there was the sound of the water, the light wind in the treetops, the occasional distant bird, but everything seemed to happen with the characteristic calm of places like this.

A primeira coisa que reparei foi o silêncio. Não era ausência total de som pois havia o som da água, o vento leve nas copas das árvores, algum pássaro distante, mas tudo parecia acontecer com a calma característica de lugares como este.

Further on, near the riverbed, ancient structures appeared, seemingly swallowed by vegetation. Low stone walls, fragments of walls, remains of buildings that were probably mills in other times. Today they are abandoned, covered in moss and surrounded by plants that have grown everywhere. There's something strange about seeing these forgotten human marks in such a silent place.

Mais adiante, junto ao leito do rio, surgiam estruturas antigas que pareciam ter sido engolidas pela vegetação. Paredes baixas de pedra, fragmentos de muros, restos de construções que provavelmente foram moinhos em outros tempos. Hoje estão abandonados, cobertos de musgo e rodeados de plantas que cresceram por todo o lado. Há algo de estranho em ver estas marcas humanas esquecidas num lugar tão silencioso.

We also found a large water tank, perfectly integrated into the terrain, and a little further up, a small waterfall cascading between dark rocks. The water fell gently, creating a constant sound that dominated the entire space. It wasn't a dramatic landscape; it was something more discreet and intimate.

Encontrámos também um tanque grande de água, perfeitamente encaixado no terreno, e um pouco mais acima uma pequena cascata que descia entre rochas escuras. A água caía com suavidade, formando um som constante que acabava por dominar todo o espaço. Não era uma paisagem dramática, era algo mais discreto e íntimo.

What surprised me was realizing how a place like this can go completely unnoticed. Just a few minutes away, Quintandona attracts visitors with its restored houses, restaurants, and the evident care taken in preserving the village. And that makes sense. But this small valley seems to exist outside of that attention. Perhaps that's why it maintains a rare authenticity.

O que me surpreendeu foi perceber como um lugar assim pode passar completamente despercebido. A poucos minutos dali, Quintandona atrai visitantes pelas casas recuperadas, pelos restaurantes e pelo cuidado evidente na preservação da aldeia. E faz sentido. Mas este pequeno vale parece existir fora dessa atenção. Talvez por isso mantenha uma autenticidade rara.

I also noticed several painted markings on the trees, clear signs of trails that cross that area and continue through the mountains. I wondered where they led. Other rivers, perhaps other hidden clearings. Places that don't appear on tourist maps but that I intend to explore in the near future.

Reparei também em várias marcas pintadas nas árvores, sinais claros de trilhos que atravessam aquela zona e continuam pela serra. Fiquei a imaginar para onde levariam. Outros rios, talvez outras clareiras escondidas. Lugares que não aparecem nos mapas turísticos mas que pretendo explorar num futuro próximo.

There was a moment when I stopped right in the middle of the small bridge to look around. The water flowed slowly underneath, the light filtered through the leaves, and the air had that fresh scent of damp vegetation. Nothing extraordinary happened in that moment. And perhaps that's exactly what made it memorable.

Houve um momento em que parei mesmo no meio da pequena ponte para olhar em volta. A água passava lentamente por baixo, a luz filtrava-se pelas folhas e o ar tinha aquele cheiro fresco de vegetação húmida. Não aconteceu nada de extraordinário nesse instante. E talvez tenha sido exatamente isso que o tornou memorável.

We don't always seek grand landscapes. Sometimes, it's enough to find a space that seems to exist outside the usual rush.
I left there with the feeling of having discovered a place that will probably remain hidden from most people who pass through Penafiel. And, honestly, part of me hopes it stays that way. Some places don't need an audience. Those who come to them out of curiosity or simply because they decided to follow the sound of the water, like us, are enough :)

Nem sempre procuramos paisagens grandiosas. Às vezes basta encontrar um espaço que parece existir à margem da pressa habitual.
Saí dali com a sensação de ter descoberto um lugar que provavelmente continuará escondido para a maioria das pessoas que passam por Penafiel. E, honestamente, parte de mim espera que continue assim. Alguns lugares não precisam de plateia. Bastam aqueles que chegam até eles por curiosidade ou apenas porque decidiram seguir o som da água, como nós :)
