Penafiel - Marecos - Igreja de St André / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
We left the city park of Penafiel in the late afternoon, at a time when the light was slowly fading and the sky threatened to change its mood. We were going to return home without major detours, but while driving up one of the higher roads there, we ended up stopping next to the Church of Saint Andrew. It wasn't planned; it was more one of those quick impulses of someone who sees an interesting place by the side of the road and decides to pull over for a few minutes.

The church appears on a high point, quite exposed, with an open view over the valley. Down below, it was still possible to distinguish part of the park where we had walked before. The contrast between the two spaces ended up holding me there for a while. In the park, the movement continued, people walking, children playing, dogs chasing balls. Up here, everything seemed more still.
The church itself is quite sober. Light stone, simple lines, and few decorative elements. It's noticeable that there has been recent work in some areas, mainly on the side entrances and the cleaner finishes near the tower, but thankfully without detracting from the space's identity. The side staircase immediately caught my attention. It fits directly into the church's structure, almost like a natural continuation of the wall itself.

Pedra clara, linhas simples e poucos elementos decorativos. A escadaria lateral chamou-me logo a atenção.

Around it is a small, well-maintained square, delimited by low stone walls and some aged olive trees. One of them was leaning very precariously, marked by time and wind. I stood there for a few minutes looking at the landscape as the sky grew heavier. The grey clouds began to close the horizon and the light grew colder with each passing minute.

On the other side of the wall, next to the still young vines planted in rows, one could see Penafiel spread across the valley. Scattered houses, secondary roads, small farms and denser areas. It wasn't the kind of view that compels someone to immediately take out their cell phone to photograph it. Perhaps that's why I liked it.

The silence up there was broken only by the sound of a few birds and the wind rustling through the trees. We didn't encounter any other people during our brief stop.
The church remains integrated into the daily life of the place, without any major artifice around it.
We ended up staying there for less time than I had imagined. The sky was clearly beginning to threaten rain, and we still had a long way to go home.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health

What a beautiful church! I love the architectural design featuring bricks and stones, the walkways, and the staircases—everything looks gorgeous, as do the views. Best regards.

The photos you included in this post caught my attention, it's a beautiful place. I love this type of architecture which now belongs only to the past. I really enjoy discovering small churches and historic places that are often overlooked by tourists. The Portuguese countryside looks very peaceful and perfect for cycling. Thank you for sharing this interesting corner of Portugal with us. Ultimately. Beautiful ride and beautiful photos
