Olhão - Historic City Center / Riding Portugal
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
We woke up that morning with a simple idea in our heads. Let's go for a walk, without GPS, without signal. We'll get lost, but with that kind of good, almost poetic loss, of someone who needs to disconnect from the world for a while and go in search of something different, even without knowing exactly what. That's how Olhão entered our plans. I'd heard of the city, knew it was nearby, by the sea, smelling of fish and salt, but I'd never been able to see it with real eyes. And that day, the only thing I wanted was this: to see, observe, absorb.

The trip there was peaceful, made with that silent anticipation of someone who doesn't expect great adventures, but expects, at the very least, something genuine. And that's exactly what we found. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted by a warm, golden light, typical of the Algarve, and by a city that's unapologetically itself. The narrow streets, the Moorish-style houses, the faded paint on the doors, the flat roofs—everything screams identity. There's something raw about Olhão, something that escaped the tourist polish of other parts of the south. I felt at home there, as if I'd stumbled upon one of those rare places that still lives at its own pace.

The visit was planned, yes, but it wasn't for an itinerary or a list of "10 things to do in Olhão." We wanted to experience the city as it is, on a normal day, without filters or artifice. The photos we took that day were premeditated, but not in the sense of fabricating moments. On the contrary, we waited for them, observed them, let them unfold naturally. And they did. The coming and going of tourists, maps in hand, eyes full of curiosity. A gentleman in a straw hat, calmly smoking, watched the hustle and bustle near the market. Two boys tried to sell handmade bracelets to passersby, perhaps more for the conversation than the profit. I sat down a few times just to watch. There's something magical about watching life unfold, especially when no one knows you're watching.

As I walked, I found myself wondering if time worked the same way there as it does in the rest of the world. Because everything in Olhão seemed to circle, as if time took small turns instead of moving forward. It was the way people greeted each other, the way the cafés seemed to never close, the way the cats slept on doorsteps with absolute confidence that nothing important would happen quickly.

I noticed the constant movement of people coming and going, like an improvised dance. Some came from the boats from the islands of Culatra and Armona, still with sand on their feet and salt in their hair. Others arrived with suitcases in hand, searching for something they perhaps couldn't name. And others, like me, were simply there, passing through this transit of lives. This observation made me think of the strange beauty of always being in motion, even when we think we're standing still. We're always arriving from one place and departing to another, even if only in our thoughts.

Before leaving, I sat on a terrace near the market. We ordered some cocktails and enjoyed them. The sun was already beginning to set, and Olhão looked even more beautiful with that low, soft light, painting the ancient facades orange and pink. I looked around one last time and wondered if I would return. The answer came effortlessly: of course I would. Because there are places that welcome us in such a way that it feels like we already belong there, even without knowing it. Next time, maybe I'll take the boat and explore the islands, or maybe I'll get lost again in the streets of the center, just because. Because getting lost, I realized, is perhaps the best way to find myself.

Antes de ir embora, sentei-me numa esplanada perto do mercado. Pedimos uns cocktails e aproveitamos.
I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
