Monção- Caminho Minhoto Ribeiro/ Riding Portugal

minhoto.jpg

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

After lunch we decided to follow the Caminho Minhoto Ribeiro, a pilgrimage route (which I have mentioned here a few times as the Camino de Santiago) that crosses the Minho region and passes through the charming Monção. The Minho River runs along one side and the walls of Monção Castle on the other, and the scenery looked like something out of a film.

The river, which is normally calm and serene, was particularly swollen due to the recent rains that were felt in the north of the country. The water was flowing strongly, dragging with it branches and leaves that had fallen from the trees. Looking at the opposite bank, on the Spanish side, we saw the horizon covered in intense vegetation.

Along the way, it was possible to observe the birds flying over the river. Geese and herons were the most visible and it is fascinating to observe how they seem to dominate the space, flying skillfully, taking advantage of the air currents that formed above the river.

The section of path we took was very well maintained with wooden walkways and everything very clean. We also cross a large garden (Parque das Caldas) with cafes, parks for children and even the municipal swimming pools which are very well located in front of the river. The facade is made of glass, allowing those inside to enjoy the hot water and appreciate the river outside without feeling the cold or rain.
Here you can also find the Monção thermal baths, if you want to take advantage of the thermal treatments.
The route of the Caminho Minhoto Ribeiro is punctuated by ancient landmarks and small chapels that appear here and there, witnesses to a distant history. Each stone, each granite cross seems to carry with it a story or a secret.

On the Spanish side of the river, something peculiar caught our attention. Initially we saw the empty space and thought that it was a swimming pool but that it would only open in the summer. A few hours later we started to see movement and I went to research: Hot Springs of Teans-Oleiros. They are considered the largest open-air spas in all of Galicia and are highly sought after throughout the year for their therapeutic and medicinal uses.
As we advanced, the walls of Monção castle became closer and closer. They made us feel like we were protected by the entire structure.

No lado espanhol do rio, algo peculiar chamou à atenção. Umas horas depois começamos a ver movimentações e fui pesquisar: Hot Springs of Teans-Oleiros.

The route is of indescribable beauty. The smell of wet earth mixed with the fresh aroma of vegetation and it felt like we were far from the city.
The fatigue accumulated along the way disappears in the immensity of the landscape. Here, when we are aware of what surrounds us and the immensity of nature, we realize that we are small.
We end our visit to this little piece of Minho here.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
