Miradouro da Senhora da Pena - Paredes de Coura / Riding Portugal

It was by chance, as so often happens on the best trips, that I discovered the Miradouro da Senhora da Pena, on Monte da Pena, in the heart of the municipality of Paredes de Coura. We were following a previously planned route, with the GPS guiding us from destination to destination, when a modest sign on the side of the road caught our attention: “Senhora da Pena”. I exchanged glances with whoever was with me in the car, and without thinking much, we followed the detour. It was one of the best decisions that day.

Foi por acaso, como tantas vezes acontece nas melhores viagens, que descobri o Miradouro da Senhora da Pena, no monte da Pena, em pleno concelho de Paredes de Coura. Íamos a seguir um roteiro previamente planeado, com o GPS a guiar-nos de destino em destino, quando uma placa modesta na beira da estrada chamou a atenção: “Senhora da Pena”. Troquei olhares com quem seguia comigo no carro, e sem pensar muito, seguimos o desvio. Foi uma das melhores decisões desse dia.

The road soon began to climb steeply. Curve after curve, winding up the hill, we gained altitude and, with it, that feeling of anticipation that precedes magical moments. The road is narrow, flanked by dense vegetation, where green predominates in all its strength. On one of the widest curves, I was able to glimpse part of a hiking trail that climbs from the foot of the mountain to the top, crossing the woods and pine forests, ending right in front of the chapel. I felt like doing it on foot on my next visit.

A estrada começou logo a subir de forma acentuada. Curva após curva, serpenteando o monte, fomos ganhando altitude e, com ela, aquela sensação de expectativa que antecede os momentos mágicos. A estrada é estreita, ladeada por vegetação densa, onde o verde predomina em toda a sua força. Numa das curvas mais abertas, consegui vislumbrar parte de um trilho pedestre que sobe desde o sopé da montanha até ao topo, cruzando o mato e os pinhais, terminando mesmo em frente à capela. Fiquei com vontade de o fazer a pé numa próxima visita.

We reached the top with the sun still high in the sky. It was a clear day, with a blue sky and a few clouds, the kind that seem hand-drawn to show nature in all its splendor. The first impact is silence. That dense silence but full of sound, the sound of leaves, insects, animals, the wind brushing against the branches, but mainly the sound of the echo. A silence that can be heard.

Chegámos ao topo ainda com o sol bem alto no céu. Estava um dia límpido, com céu azul e com algumas nuvens, daquelas que parecem desenhadas à mão para mostrar a natureza em todo o seu esplendor. O primeiro impacto é o silêncio. Aquele silêncio denso mas cheio de som, o som das folhas, dos insetos, dos animais, do vento a roçar os galhos, mas principalmente o som do eco. Um silêncio que se ouve.

We parked in the small square next to the picnic area, equipped with a few wooden tables, public restrooms and surrounded by trees that, with their shade, must offer a real oasis on hotter days. Everything was tidy, clean, well maintained. The local community’s care for this space is noticeable.

Estacionámos no pequeno largo junto ao parque de merendas, equipado com algumas mesas de madeira, sanitários públicos e rodeado por árvores que, com a sua sombra, devem oferecer um verdadeiro oásis em dias de maior calor. Estava tudo arrumado, limpo, bem conservado. Nota-se o cuidado da comunidade local com este espaço.

We climbed a little further, now on foot, and behold the small Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Pena, dating from the 18th century, was revealed. A simple temple, but full of presence. The self-supporting granite stonework, with its rectangular layout and front façade featuring the image of Our Lady of Pena, conveys robustness and serenity at the same time. Unfortunately, the chapel was closed, in fact, all the buildings around there were closed, which contributed even more to the feeling of isolation, of peace.

Subimos mais um pouco, agora a pé, e eis que se revela a pequena Capela de Nossa Senhora da Pena, datada do século XVIII. Um templo simples mas cheio de presença. A cantaria autoportante de granito, com a sua planta retangular e fachada frontal onde se destaca a imagem da Senhora da Pena, transmite robustez e serenidade ao mesmo tempo. Infelizmente, a capela estava fechada, aliás, todos os edifícios por ali estavam encerrados, o que contribuiu ainda mais para a sensação de isolamento, de paz.

It was near the viewpoint, right in front of the chapel, that the magic happened. The view is breathtaking. In front of us, the Coura Valley stretches out in shades of green, dotted with small houses, well-defined agricultural fields and dense forests. In the distance, on days like this, with clear skies, you can see the sea, a thin blue line on the horizon, which reminds us that Portugal is a land of mountains, valleys and ocean. A landscape that cannot be forgotten.

Foi junto ao miradouro, mesmo à frente da capela, que a magia aconteceu. A vista é de cortar a respiração. À nossa frente, o Vale do Coura estende-se em tons de verde, pontuado por pequenas casas, campos agrícolas bem delineados e florestas cerradas. Ao longe, em dias como este, de céu limpo, consegue avistar-se o mar, uma linha azul ténue no horizonte, que nos lembra como Portugal é terra de serras, vales e oceano. Uma paisagem que não se esquece.

As we took in the scene, we came across just one person, an elderly gentleman, who was calmly walking towards the exit. He greeted us with a silent wave and a slight smile. From the serenity in his gaze and the direction he came from, I had the feeling he had moved there for some spiritual purpose. Maybe a promise, a prayer, or just a visit from someone who knows that place well and will find peace there.

Enquanto absorvíamos aquele cenário, cruzámo-nos apenas com uma única pessoa, um senhor de idade avançada, que caminhava calmamente em direção à saída. Cumprimentou-nos com um aceno silencioso e um leve sorriso. Pela serenidade do seu olhar e a direção de onde vinha, tive a sensação de que se tinha deslocado ali com algum propósito espiritual. Talvez uma promessa, uma oração, ou apenas uma visita de quem conhece bem aquele lugar e ali vai encontrar paz.

We stayed there for a long time, alone, just us, the immense landscape and the murmur of nature. It was impossible not to feel that good energy that certain places emit, as if they purified us just by their presence. I was wondering how I had never heard of this viewpoint before. Maybe it's better this way, places like this remain pure precisely because they are not mass-produced.

Estivemos ali um bom tempo, sozinhos, apenas nós, a paisagem imensa e o murmúrio da natureza. Foi impossível não sentir aquela boa energia que certos locais emitem, como se nos purificassem apenas pela sua presença. Fiquei a pensar como é que nunca tinha ouvido falar deste miradouro antes. Talvez seja melhor assim, lugares como este mantêm-se puros justamente por não serem massificados.

We took a few photos, of course, but none of them really capture what it feels like to be on that hilltop. The beauty of the place is as much in the view as in the silence, in the history engraved in the stones of the chapel, in the dense green that surrounds us. It's a place to be, breathe, and let time pass without rushing.

Tirámos algumas fotos, claro, mas nenhuma consegue realmente capturar o que se sente naquele topo de monte. A beleza do lugar está tanto na vista como no silêncio, na história gravada nas pedras da capela, no verde denso que nos envolv. É um sítio para estar, respirar, e deixar que o tempo passe sem pressa.

On the way down, with the sun already starting to paint the sky golden, I was certain that that spontaneous stop had become one of the highlights of the day. And more than that, it made me want to go back, with more time, maybe to do the lower trail, maybe to see the chapel open, or simply to feel that peace again.

Na descida, com o sol já a começar a tingir o céu de dourado, fiquei com a certeza de que aquela paragem espontânea tornou-se num dos momentos altos do dia. E mais do que isso, deu-me vontade de voltar, com mais tempo, talvez para fazer o trilho desde baixo, talvez para apanhar a capela aberta, ou simplesmente para voltar a sentir aquela paz.

If you ever find yourself in the Paredes de Coura area and see a sign indicating the way to Senhora da Pena, don't hesitate. Come up. Follow. Even if it's just for an hour. The viewpoint is there, silent and grand, waiting for those who are curious and have time to discover it.

Se algum dia estiverem pela zona de Paredes de Coura, e virem uma placa a indicar o caminho para a Senhora da Pena, não hesitem. Subam. Sigam. Nem que seja só por uma hora. O miradouro está lá, silencioso e grandioso, à espera de quem tenha curiosidade e tempo para o descobrir.
