Luzes Selvagens - Zoo Santo Inácio / Riding Portugal

I can still smell the typical zoo smell mixed with the scent of the trees that spread through the air as I walked through the Santo Inácio Zoo, in Vila Nova de Gaia. The sun gently gilded the landscape, and a pleasant breeze ran through the gardens, making the sunset even more inviting. This time, the visit had a special touch, the already well-known Wild Lights exhibition that we had the opportunity to see still set up, ready to light up the night with its more than 600 shining figures.

Ainda sinto o cheiro típico de um zoo misturado com o perfume das árvores que se espalhavam pelo ar enquanto caminhava pelo Zoo de Santo Inácio, em Vila Nova de Gaia. O sol dourava suavemente a paisagem, e uma brisa agradável percorria os jardins, tornando o entardecer ainda mais convidativo. Desta vez, a visita tinha um toque especial, a já conhecida exposição das Luzes Selvagens que tivemos a oportunidade de ver ainda montada, pronta para iluminar a noite com as suas mais de 600 figuras brilhantes.

Unfortunately, I could only explore the zoo during the afternoon, but even so, the promise of that magical spectacle created a different atmosphere, almost as if the place was suspended between the real and the enchanted.
Unfortunately, this was the last day of the exhibition, so now we will have to wait another year to try our luck again :)

Infelizmente, só podia explorar o zoo durante a tarde, mas mesmo assim, a promessa desse espetáculo mágico criava uma atmosfera diferente, quase como se o local estivesse suspenso entre o real e o encantado.
Infelizmente este foi o último dia da exposição, por isso agora será necessário esperar mais um ano para voltar a tentar a sorte :)

Upon entering, the first thing that caught my attention was the way in which the usual scenery of the park gained a new dimension with the imposing illuminated figures scattered along the path. It was strange to see them there, static and still asleep in the daylight, but even so, each piece was crafted with impressive detail, a tiger in an attacking position, a giraffe that seemed to stretch its neck to reach the highest leaves, gigantic flowers as if they came out of a dream. Even without the night glow, there was a certain magic in the air.

Ao entrar, a primeira coisa que me chamou a atenção foi a forma como o cenário habitual do parque ganhava uma nova dimensão com as imponentes figuras iluminadas espalhadas pelo caminho. Era estranho vê-las ali, estáticas e ainda adormecidas pela luz do dia, mas mesmo assim, cada peça era trabalhada com um detalhe impressionante, um tigre em posição de ataque, uma girafa que parecia esticar o pescoço para alcançar as folhas mais altas, flores gigantescas como se fossem saídas de um sonho. Ainda que sem o brilho noturno, sentia-se uma certa magia no ar.

The first animals we visited were the meerkats, always attentive and full of personality. The group of children next to us laughed at their funny poses and the way they took turns keeping an eye on their surroundings. Then we headed to the lion tunnel, where the feeling of being so close to such a majestic predator made my heart race. On the other side of the glass, a lion rested peacefully, but his sharp gaze made it clear that he knew we were the real visitors in that space.

Os primeiros animais que visitámos foram os suricatas, sempre atentos e cheios de personalidade. O grupo de crianças ao nosso lado ria com as suas poses engraçadas e a forma como se revezavam para vigiar os arredores. Depois, seguimos para o túnel dos leões, onde a sensação de estar tão perto de um predador tão majestoso fez o coração acelerar. Do outro lado do vidro, um leão repousava tranquilamente, mas o olhar afiado deixava claro que ele sabia que éramos nós os verdadeiros visitantes naquele espaço.

But this session was covered in one of the articles shared previously, and it was not on this side that the illuminated figures were installed, and I think with the purpose of not scaring these animals that may be more impressionable to this type of spectacle.

Mas esta sessão foi abordada num dos artigos partilhados anteriormente, e não era neste lado que se encontravam instaladas as figuras iluminadas, e penso que com o propósito de não assustar estes animais que poderão ser mais impressionáveis a este tipo de espetáculo.

We continued exploring and, at every corner, we discovered new surprises. The gardens were particularly beautiful, bathed in the warm light of the late afternoon, and the sounds of the animals mixed with the cheerful conversations of the families who, like us, were strolling through the park. When we passed by the reptile enclosure, some of them watched us with an unsettling calm. There was something hypnotic in those still gazes, a reminder that the natural world is both beautiful and mysterious.

Continuámos a explorar e, a cada canto, descobríamos novas surpresas. Os jardins estavam particularmente bonitos, banhados pela luz quente do final da tarde, e os sons dos animais misturavam-se com as conversas alegres das famílias que, como nós, passeavam pelo parque. Quando passámos pelo espaço dos répteis, alguns deles observavam-nos com uma calma inquietante. Havia algo hipnótico naqueles olhares imóveis, uma lembrança de que o mundo natural tem tanto de belo quanto de misterioso.

One of the most memorable moments of the visit was when we stopped in a wider area of ​​the park, where some of the luminous figures began to gain prominence as dusk approached. They did not yet shine in their full splendor, but they were beginning to reveal the first shades of color. There, for a moment, I closed my eyes and imagined what it would be like to see that place completely lit up, enveloped in a magical light that would transport anyone to a parallel universe. It was a mix of nostalgia and wonder, a feeling that is difficult to describe, but that remains etched in my memory.

Um dos momentos mais marcantes da visita foi quando parámos numa zona mais ampla do parque, onde algumas das figuras luminosas começavam a ganhar destaque com a aproximação do anoitecer. Ainda não brilhavam no seu esplendor total, mas começavam a revelar os primeiros tons de cor. Ali, por instantes, fechei os olhos e imaginei como seria ver aquele lugar completamente iluminado, envolto numa luz mágica que transportaria qualquer um para um universo paralelo. Foi um misto de nostalgia e deslumbramento, uma sensação difícil de descrever, mas que ficou gravada na memória.

When it was time to leave, I felt that typical weight of saying goodbye to a special place. Even if you haven't seen the Wild Lights in their full magnitude, the mere presence of the sculptures has brought new life to the space and added a layer of fantasy to the experience. I left with the promise that we would return next year to live the true experience at night.
Even without this complete view, the memory remains of a special sunset, in a place where nature and art came together to create something truly magical.

Quando chegou a hora de partir, senti aquele peso típico de despedida de um lugar especial. Ainda que não tenha visto as Luzes Selvagens na sua magnitude, a simples presença das esculturas já trouxe uma nova vida ao espaço e acrescentou uma camada de fantasia à experiência. Saí com a promessa de que voltariamos no próximo ano para viver a verdadeira experiência à noite.
Mesmo sem essa visão completa, fica a recordação de um entardecer especial, num lugar onde a natureza e a arte se encontraram para criar algo verdadeiramente mágico.
