Landscape - Freguesia de Arnóia / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

I climbed the hill without any great expectations. I had heard that from the top I could see everything, whatever that meant. But everyone's everything is very subjective, and since I'm a person who believes more in what I see than in what I'm told, I decided to go and see for myself. The morning was already advanced, and the heat was pressing as if it were the height of August, and not in what, technically, should still be a mild spring.

PT

The path, winding and lined with bushes scented with rosemary and brooms, demanded more from my legs than I expected. But there was something in that silence interrupted only by the birdsong and the buzzing of insects that focused on my legs that kept me going. I felt far from everything, even though I knew that, just around the corner, there were houses and people going about their lives as if nothing was happening.

PT

When I finally reached the top, or rather, what for me was more than enough of a top :) I came across a picture postcard-worthy scene. The landscape opened up into a wide horizon, revealing a generous valley dotted with ramshackle houses, walled backyards, cultivated fields and, surprisingly, an unexpected number of swimming pools. From above, they looked like small turquoise spots fitted into lush gardens, like pieces of a carefully assembled jigsaw puzzle.

The houses, many of them clearly restored, blended the traditional with the modern. There were granite walls covered in ivy, slate roofs shining in the sun, wooden balconies where clothes danced in the wind. The scenery was bucolic, almost cinematic.

I embraced that moment with a smile. I sat down on a rock warmed by the sun, and let myself be. My body was grateful for the break, but it was my mind that benefited most. There, at that high point, far away but close, I realized that there is a profound difference between looking and seeing. From above, we can see more than meets the eye. We capture patterns, rhythms, relationships. And sometimes, if we are quiet enough, we can even see inside ourselves.

PT

Abracei aquele momento com um sorriso. Sentei-me numa pedra aquecida pelo sol, e deixei-me ficar.

While the children dived into the pools and the adults stayed in the shade of the porches, I allowed myself a little reflection. That landscape was not only beautiful, it was alive. There were stories there of those who built with their own hands, of those who left and returned, of those who decided to transform their grandparents' old house into a little corner of leisure, or a refuge for visitors in search of the peace that urban centers no longer know how to offer.

PT

But I also thought about the absences. Because for every house with a new pool, there will be another that has been left empty, waiting for someone who will never return. I thought about the neighbors who no longer know each other by name, because now more guests cross paths than residents. And yet, there is a serene beauty in this cycle of transformation. Perhaps the secret lies in balance and the mountain, that old guardian of stones and roots, seemed to have known this for a long time.

PT

I stayed there a little longer, taking in everything I could. The wind was starting to blow cooler and making the pine leaves that protected me from the direct sun dance. A cheeky butterfly landed on my backpack, as if it also wanted to share the moment. And in that improvised stillness, I felt a kind of belonging, as if that place had accepted me, even without a formal invitation.

PT

Before getting up to go down, I took one last look. The same view, but different now. Because when we stop to think, even if it's just for a few minutes, the world seems to reorganize itself around us. It takes on new contours, deeper meanings. That rural area with its well-kept houses and spring pools stopped being just a pretty setting. It became, for a few moments, the mirror of what we so often seek: a sense of purpose, a pause, a place where everything makes sense, even if we don't know exactly why, but simply because I need to feel that way in this piece of land full of constant conflicts.

PT

The descent was easier, perhaps because I had left some of the weight up there. On the way back, I could still hear one last dive, one last laugh, before the sounds faded into the distance. And as I walked, I thought that you don't always have to go far to find a moment of truth. Sometimes, you just have to climb a hill, listen to the world and be silent.

PT

I hope you enjoyed.
