Igreja de São Pedro - Marialva / Riding Portugal

We continued our tour of Marialva, but ended up lingering longer in the area of ​​Saint Peter's Church and the small streets around it. The light was exactly how I like it: low, warm, and soft :)

Continuamos o nosso passeio por Marialva, mas acabamos por nos demorar mais na zona da Igreja de São Pedro e nas pequenas ruas à volta. A luz estava exatamente como gosto, baixa, quente e suave :)

The granite houses scattered across the hillside create a very unique composition, with narrow streets that force us to walk slowly on the uneven stone ground, with old walls, clay roofs worn by time—everything there seems to age at the same time.

As casas de granito espalhadas pela encosta criam uma composição muito própria, com as ruas estreitas que obrigam-nos a caminhar devagar pelo chão irregular em pedra, com os muros antigos, os telhados de barro já gastos pelo tempo, tudo ali envelhece ao mesmo tempo, parece-me.

The church caught my attention precisely because of its simplicity. It's not a large or very elaborate building, but it has details that make a difference when you stop to observe calmly. The small bell tower with two bells stood out against the sky, with the moon already visible in the background, even before nightfall.

A igreja acabou por me chamar a atenção precisamente pela simplicidade. Não é um edifício grande nem muito trabalhado, mas tem detalhes que fazem diferença quando paramos para observar com calma. O pequeno campanário de duas sineiras recortava-se contra o céu, já com a lua visível ao fundo, ainda antes do anoitecer.

While walking through the courtyard, I began to notice small elements that would easily go unnoticed on a quicker visit. A stone bench leaning against the church wall, the wear marks on the steps of the side entrance, the lichens scattered across the walls. Even the silence there seemed different from other places I've visited, which were also quite peaceful.

À medida que fui andando pelo pátio, comecei a reparar em pequenos elementos que facilmente passariam despercebidos numa visita mais rápida. Um banco de pedra encostado à parede da igreja, as marcas de desgaste nos degraus da entrada lateral, os líquenes espalhados pelos muros. Até o silêncio ali parecia diferente de outros sítios que visitei, também eles, lugares bastante tranquilos.

Next to a closed door I found an old litter, one of those used in religious processions to carry sanctified images, lying on the ground. It was there leaning against the wall, with clear signs of use and some marks of time. I confess I spent a few minutes observing it, not for religious reasons per se, but because I found it there, alone, with no one to guard it. It wasn't displayed as a decorative piece nor specially protected. It was simply part of that space.

Junto a uma porta fechada encontrei pousado no chão um andor antigo, daqueles usados nas procissões religiosas para transportar imagens santificadas. Estava ali encostado à parede, com sinais claros de ser usado e algumas marcas do tempo. Confesso que fiquei alguns minutos a observá-lo, não pela questão religiosa em si, mas porque o encontrei ali, sozinho, sem ninguém a guardá-lo. Não estava exposto como peça decorativa nem protegido de forma especial. Simplesmente fazia parte daquele espaço.

I continued walking through the narrow alleys around the church as the light changed. There were areas where the sun still shone directly on the facades and others already immersed in shadow. Some houses have been recently restored, it's easy to see, but fortunately without significantly altering the overall character. In others, the stone remains more raw, irregular, with small imperfections.

Continuei a andar pelas ruelas estreitas em volta da igreja enquanto a luz ia mudando. Havia zonas onde o sol ainda batia diretamente nas fachadas e outras já mergulhadas em sombra. Algumas casas foram recuperadas recentemente, percebe-se facilmente, mas felizmente sem descaracterizar demasiado o conjunto. Noutras, a pedra permanece mais crua, irregular, com pequenas imperfeições.

One of the things I liked most about that region was precisely the absence of noise. There was practically nobody on the street. Occasionally someone would appear in the distance, disappearing around the next bend between the granite walls.

Uma das coisas de que mais gostei naquela zona foi precisamente a ausência de ruído. Não havia praticamente ninguém na rua. De vez em quando surgia alguém ao longe, desaparecendo logo na curva seguinte entre os muros de granito.

At one point I stopped at the churchyard wall and just looked at the houses scattered across the hillside. The golden hour sun shone on the rooftops and stone walls in a very natural way, without filters, without the need for extensive photo editing.

A certa altura parei junto ao muro do pátio da igreja e fiquei apenas a olhar para as casas espalhadas pela encosta. O sol da golden hour batia nos telhados e nas paredes de pedra de uma forma muito natural, sem filtros, sem necessidade de grandes edições fotográficas.

When I started to descend again through the village streets, the sun was already disappearing behind the mountains. The temperature dropped a little and shadows began to occupy all the spaces where there had previously been light. Even so, I will return because Marialva at night must be wonderful.

Quando comecei a descer novamente pelas ruas da aldeia, já o sol desaparecia atrás das montanhas. A temperatura caiu ligeiramente e as sombras começaram a ocupar os espaços todos onde antes ainda havia luz. Ainda assim hei-de voltar pois Marialva à noite deve ser maravilhosa.
