Last year we had already noticed the signs for Forte do Rato in Tavira, but we ended up not going. The first time we saw it was precisely from the ferry to Tavira Island. We passed by, looked at that low fort by the water, and the idea of ​​returning there on another occasion stuck with us. It was postponed, as happens so often when we are traveling and there is always something that ends up being left for next time.

No ano passado já tínhamos reparado nas placas para o Forte do Rato, em Tavira, mas acabámos por não ir. A primeira vez que o vimos foi precisamente a partir do ferry para a Ilha de Tavira. Passámos por perto, olhámos para aquele forte baixo junto à água e ficou a ideia de lá voltar noutra ocasião. Ficou para depois, como acontece tantas vezes quando estamos de viagem e há sempre qualquer coisa que acaba por ficar para a próxima.

This time we went by car. We took advantage of passing through that area to finally stop. The fort was no longer a structure seen in the distance during the crossing. Now we were there, on land, with time to see it better.
The first impression remained more or less the same as the previous year. Forte do Rato is not one of those monuments that stand out like so many others we have seen. On the contrary, it is somewhat abandoned. It is low, discreet and, depending on where you look, it almost seems part of the shoreline itself. We had to get closer to start noticing the structure better and understanding its position.

Desta vez fomos de carro. Aproveitámos a passagem por aquela zona para finalmente parar. O forte já não era uma construção vista à distância, durante a travessia. Agora estávamos ali, em terra, com tempo para o ver melhor.
A primeira impressão manteve-se mais ou menos igual à do ano anterior. O Forte do Rato não é daqueles monumentos que se destacam como outros tantos que já vimos. Pelo contrario, está um pouco abandonado. É baixo, discreto e, dependendo do ponto de onde se olha, parece quase fazer parte da própria linha da margem. Foi preciso aproximarmo-nos para começar a reparar melhor na construção e perceber a sua posição.

This characteristic even pleased me. There are places that are instantly recognizable, even before we know what we're seeing. Here, the opposite happened. First, we see an old building near the water, and only then do we realize it's the fort we'd seen from the ferry months before. There was that little feeling of finally completing a visit that had been on hold.

Essa característica até me agradou. Há lugares que se identificam logo, mesmo antes de sabermos o que estamos a ver. Aqui aconteceu o contrário. Primeiro vemos uma construção antiga junto à água e só depois percebemos que é o forte que tínhamos visto do ferry meses antes. Houve aquela pequena sensação de finalmente completar uma visita que tinha ficado pendurada.

The Forte do Rato, also known as Forte de Santo António da Barra, is linked to the defensive system of the Tavira estuary. The construction we know today is the result of works carried out in the modern era, a period when the defense of the Algarve coast had a very specific function. The location was related to the surveillance and protection of access through the estuary and the defense of the estuary.

O Forte do Rato, também conhecido como Forte de Santo António da Barra, está ligado ao sistema defensivo da barra de Tavira. A construção que hoje conhecemos resulta de obras realizadas na época moderna, num período em que a defesa da costa algarvia tinha uma função bastante concreta. A localização estava relacionada com a vigilância e proteção do acesso pela ria e com a defesa da barra.

I particularly like to look at these places trying to understand their function first. Dates and names are important, of course, but the location usually explains a lot. In the case of Forte do Rato, just observing the surrounding space is enough to realize that the position was not chosen at random. The estuary, the estuary, and access to the coastal area are right there in front.

Gosto particularmente de olhar para estes lugares tentando perceber primeiro a sua função. As datas e os nomes são importantes, claro, mas a localização costuma explicar muita coisa. No caso do Forte do Rato, basta observar o espaço envolvente para perceber que a posição não foi escolhida ao acaso. A ria, a barra e o acesso à zona costeira estão mesmo ali à frente.

The name itself is also quite curious. Forte do Rato is the name that sticks in my mind most easily, while Forte de Santo António da Barra has a more formal air. I don't know if it's because I'm used to the first name, but that's how I come to mind. And, in a way, it matches the image the fort conveys. There's no great solemnity there.

O próprio nome também acaba por ser curioso. Forte do Rato é a designação que mais facilmente fica na memória, enquanto Forte de Santo António da Barra tem um ar mais formal. Não sei se é por estar habituada ao primeiro nome, mas é assim que me ocorre chamá-lo. E, de certa forma, combina com a imagem que o forte transmite. Não há ali grande solenidade.

After seeing the fort, we started paying more attention to what was around it. From that area, you can see the small nearby beaches and the pier where the ferries that connect to Tavira Island dock. It was interesting to rediscover, this time from another perspective, the route we had taken the previous year.

Depois de vermos o forte, começámos a prestar mais atenção ao que estava à volta. Daquela zona conseguem ver-se as pequenas praias próximas e o cais onde atracam os ferries que fazem a ligação à Ilha de Tavira. Foi interessante reencontrar, desta vez de outra prespetiva, o percurso que tínhamos feito no ano anterior.

The pier has its own rhythm. The ferries arrive, drop off passengers, depart again, and the landscape remains practically the same. For those who use that connection frequently, it will probably be routine, but for those visiting, it helps to better understand the relationship between the various points in that area.

O cais tem um movimento muito próprio. Os ferries chegam, deixam passageiros, voltam a partir e a paisagem continua praticamente igual. Para quem utiliza aquela ligação com frequência será provavelmente uma rotina, mas para quem está de visita ajuda a perceber melhor a relação entre os vários pontos daquela zona.

And the fort ends up in the middle of it all without drawing much attention. It's there, but it doesn't dominate the landscape. On one side we have the water and the beaches, on the other the docks and the movement of the boats, and in the middle is this structure linked to a time when that space had a very different function.
We stayed there for a while, without much hurry, and then continued on our way. The visit that last year had only been a view from the ferry was finally completed. This time, at least, we stopped to see the Forte do Rato.

E o forte acaba por ficar no meio de tudo isto sem chamar demasiado a atenção. Está lá, mas não domina a paisagem. De um lado temos a água e as praias, do outro o cais e o movimento dos barcos, e no meio está esta construção ligada a uma época em que aquele espaço tinha uma função bastante diferente.
Ficámos algum tempo por ali, sem grande pressa, e depois seguimos caminho. A visita que no ano passado tinha ficado apenas pela vista do ferry ficou finalmente feita. Desta vez, pelo menos, parámos para conhecer o Forte do Rato.
