Forjães Village - Esposende / Riding Portugal
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
I must confess that it had never occurred to me to write about Forjães, this small rural gem in the municipality of Esposende, better known, at least to me until that afternoon, as “that place where the GPS told me to turn right without much explanation”. But sometimes, the best moments are not the ones we plan, they are the ones that happen to us when the universe decides to shuffle our schedule and offer us an hour of peace, stretched legs and an unexpectedly beautiful view of the river.

It all started with a meeting, one of those formal ones, with a serious face and Excel to match, with a client who, to my surprise, chose Forjães as the headquarters of his company.
The client said goodbye with a firm handshake and a “see you soon then”, and I prepared myself for the next appointment of the day, which was a virtual meeting. But as the gods of scheduling sometimes like to play tricks, I received a notification: meeting cancelled. Cancelled! Or, if you prefer, unexpected freedom to try to fill at least one full hour.

I parked the car next to the Neiva River, one of those rivers that looks like it was hand-painted to illustrate elementary school books, calm, clear, surrounded by lush vegetation, with the occasional bird acting as a natural tourist guide. The breeze was cool, the sun peeked through the clouds as if to say “go, enjoy it” and I obeyed. I got out of the car, stretched my arms, heard a crack in one shoulder blade that made me promise to go back to the gym, and started walking.

Saí do carro, estiquei os braços, ouvi um estalido numa omoplata que me fez prometer voltar ao ginásio, e pus-me a caminhar.
Forjães is one of those places that mixes the rural with the poetic. Its history goes back to ancient times, when the fertile banks of the river provided sustenance for populations dedicated to agriculture and, of course, forging, hence the name. Legend has it that much more than iron was forged in this land; generations of men and women with calloused hands and huge hearts were forged. And you can feel it on the streets, in the stone houses with flower pots in the windows and in the warm greetings of those who pass by and wave, even without knowing who the stranger is.

During the walk, I found myself contemplating small wonders of rural life: a man washing his tractor, a lady hanging clothes on a clothesline with colorful pegs and another lady picking cabbages from her garden. Life there flows at a different pace, without rushing, without pressure, without notifications vibrating in my pocket. Okay, they did vibrate, but I ignored them, which is a dying art.

At a certain point, I came across a bridge in the middle of the river. I closed my eyes. I breathed in. I heard the sound of running water, birds chirping and a motorcycle that seemed to be in urgent need of repair. Even so, at that moment, I felt as if I had discovered one of those places where time seems to slow down just to give us space to breathe better.

A certa altura, deparei-me com uma ponte no meio do rio. Fechei os olhos. Inspirei.
As I walked back to the car, I came across a stray dog who seemed determined to follow me. I named him Batista, of course, a leading role in my imaginary narrative and a soap opera-worthy “goodbye” when he finally got distracted by a piece of bread left by someone generous. Life, sometimes, is also made up of these little side plots.

I returned to the car with a lighter soul and a renewed spirit. And if someone asks me if I recommend Forjães, I will say yes, of course, especially if they have a canceled meeting and an hour to fill with quality. Because sometimes, the best detours are the ones that make us stop to see what we never thought to look for.
And if, by chance, you see a dog named Batista sniffing the tires of your car, tell him I send you my regards.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
