Faro - Sé Catedral de Faro / Riding Portugal
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
The truth is, I had no idea Faro had such a beautiful cathedral. To be honest, I didn't even have high expectations of the city. For me, Faro has always been that place with an airport. A sort of waiting room for the Algarve's hottest destinations and for the annual Motard rally. But, as so often happens when we travel without any major plans, what I didn't expect ended up surprising me.

We were wandering the streets of the historic center, somewhat aimlessly, when we came across some ancient walls. Grand, imposing, with that air of someone who's seen a lot and isn't impressed by backpackers. We went in. Literally, because to get to Faro Cathedral you have to cross the walls of the so-called Old City (or Vila-Adentro, as they say here).

And it was right then that we felt we were entering another time. The cobblestone alleys, the white houses with wooden windows—everything contributes to the atmosphere of a historical film, but with the Algarve sun. And, in the background, there it was, the Faro Cathedral, discreet and elegant, as if it didn't need to show off to be noticed.

At first glance, the facade doesn't scream "monumental cathedral." But there's a quiet dignity there that caught my attention. The Cathedral is a true mosaic of styles and eras. After all, it's been a Roman temple, a Visigothic church, an Arab mosque, and only later, a Christian church. It's as if each stone tells a different story, yet they all fit together into a larger one.

I didn't climb the tower (yes, you can climb it), but it was too hot. The sun felt like a fire, and that gave us an excuse to go back.
The streets within the walls are wonderful. It felt like we'd left Faro, the hustle and bustle, the noise of the cars, and arrived in another city.

There in the middle of the square stands a statue of King Afonso III. And further ahead, a large mural by Zeca Afonso. I've already mentioned him here when we visited Grandola. We can't separate the village from the singer, and the singer from the village. After all, the song "Grandola Vila Morena" symbolizes Portugal's freedom.

Faro Cathedral is not just a monument. It's a bridge between cultures, between centuries, between everything we were and still are. And it's also proof that sometimes the best places are kept behind walls, waiting for someone to bother to enter.
And we did. Thankfully.

Ainda bem.
I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health

A beautiful phrase to conclude this journey: "the best places remain behind walls, waiting for someone to bother to enter." Regards, @onyfest

The atmosphere and structure of the city seem to have a very old tradition. And it was even better to see the picture of the plane from a closer distance.
That place is so beautiful. I heard about it before from a friend, but now I saw it in a picture and I believe what they said. The cathedral and its history are really nice.
Sometimes the best discoveries are the ones we stumble upon without expecting anything and Faro Cathedral is the perfect example of that.
What a beautiful discovery! Faro reflects Portugal rich history and cultural layers. The cathedral sounds like a timeless symbol of heritage and faith.
