Continuing from where we left off in the previous article, after climbing the Cuca Macuca staircase, we arrive at the main enclosure, located in a higher area of ​​the Serra de Santa Justa. It is there that Valongo Romano concentrates much of its activity, bringing together different spaces dedicated to demonstrations of ancestral crafts and arts. The visit unfolds randomly, and the shade of the vegetation allows you to explore each workshop at your own pace and with attention.

Continuando do ponto onde ficámos no artigo anterior, depois da subida pela escadaria Cuca Macuca chegamos ao recinto principal, instalado numa zona mais elevada da Serra de Santa Justa. É ali que o Valongo Romano concentra grande parte da sua atividade, reunindo diferentes espaços dedicados às demonstrações de ofícios e artes ancestrais. A visita faz-se de forma aleatória e as sombras da vegetação permitem explorar cada uma das oficinas com tempo e atenção.

As you walk through the enclosure, you'll find artisans working with different materials, explaining ancient techniques and showing how everyday objects were produced. Instead of simple exhibitions, there's the possibility of observing the process as it happens, which makes the visit more interesting. Not all demonstrations take place at the same time, so there's always something different to discover as you move through the site.

Ao caminhar pelo recinto encontram-se artesãos a trabalhar diferentes materiais, explicando técnicas antigas e mostrando como eram produzidos objetos do quotidiano. Em vez de simples exposições, existe a possibilidade de observar o processo enquanto decorre, o que torna a visita mais interessante. Nem todas as demonstrações acontecem ao mesmo tempo, por isso há sempre algo diferente para descobrir enquanto avançamos pelo recinto.

Between workshops, small areas appear where some animals are kept, integrated into the recreation without seeming out of place. There are also moments dedicated to combat demonstrations and other activities related to Roman military life. The fights attract a large audience and manage to hold attention for several minutes, mainly due to the care put into the representation and explanation of the context.

Entre uma oficina e outra surgem pequenas áreas onde estão alguns animais, integrados na recriação sem parecerem deslocados. Também há momentos dedicados às demonstrações de combate e a outras atividades relacionadas com a vida militar romana. As lutas atraem bastante público e conseguem prender a atenção durante alguns minutos, sobretudo pelo cuidado colocado na representação e na explicação do contexto.

One of the activities that attracts the most attention is the possibility of horseback riding. It's not a very long experience, but it fits well with the overall atmosphere of the event and ends up being one of the most photographed images by those passing by.

Uma das atividades que mais chama a atenção é a possibilidade de montar a cavalo. Não é uma experiência muito longa, mas encaixa bem no ambiente geral do evento e acaba por ser uma das imagens mais fotografadas por quem passa.

The workshops are distributed in different locations, and in this way, visitors end up spreading out naturally, especially since the space was more than sufficient for everyone who went there. This allows for observing each area calmly and talking to those participating in the reenactments whenever there is an opportunity.

As oficinas estão distribuídas por diferentes pontos e dessa forma os visitantes acabam por se espalhar naturalmente, até porque o espaço foi mais do que suficiente para toda a gente que ali se deslocou e isso permite observar cada espaço com alguma calma e conversar com quem participa nas recriações, sempre que existe oportunidade.

Overall, this is clearly the most dynamic area of ​​Roman Valongo, where there is constant movement, sounds of tools, conversations, demonstrations, and small enactments that take place throughout the day, conveying a very clear idea of ​​various trades and activities associated with the Roman period.

No conjunto, esta é claramente a zona mais dinâmica do Valongo Romano onde existe movimento constante, sons de ferramentas, conversas, demonstrações e pequenas encenações que vão acontecendo ao longo do dia, transmitindo uma ideia bastante lúcida de vários ofícios e atividades associadas ao período romano.

After exploring this main area, only one stage of the visit remains: a permanent space that helps to understand why it makes sense to hold an event of this type precisely in the Serra de Santa Justa, but once again, I'll leave that part for the next article :)
