Cinfães Village - Main Church Garden / Riding Portugal

Walking through the gardens of the Parish Church in Cinfães is one of those experiences that makes you slow down, take a deep breath, and suddenly enter a kind of time capsule where past and present meet.

Passear pelos Jardins da Igreja Matriz em Cinfães, é uma daquelas experiências que te fazem desacelerar, respirar fundo e, de repente, entrar numa espécie de cápsula do tempo onde passado e presente se encontram .

The Cinfães Parish Church is a centerpiece of the village, not only for its impressive architecture, but for the role it played (and still plays) in the lives of the locals. With origins dating back to the 17th century, this church is a testament to the changes that have taken place in this corner of the north, from medieval times to modern times. Its style blends Baroque and Mannerist elements, with details that make you stop and appreciate the mastery of the ancient master masons. Have you ever stopped to think about how much time and effort it takes to create something like this? Every stone, every ornament, seems to carry centuries of stories and prayers.

A Igreja Matriz de Cinfães é uma peça central da aldeia, não só pela sua arquitetura impressionante, mas pelo papel que desempenhou (e ainda desempenha) na vida das pessoas da região. Com origens que remontam ao século XVII, esta igreja é um testemunho das mudanças que passaram por este cantinho do norte, desde as épocas medievais até à modernidade. O seu estilo mistura elementos barrocos e maneiristas, com detalhes que fazem parar e apreciar a mestria dos antigos mestres pedreiros. Já pararam para pensar quanto tempo e esforço é preciso para criar algo assim? Cada pedra, cada ornamento, parece carregar séculos de histórias e orações.

But what truly fascinated me were the gardens that surround it. A green, peaceful, and vibrant space where we can sit on a bench and simply watch the world go by. Or, better yet, feel like the world stops for a while just for you. During our stroll, I managed to capture moments of natural life, elderly people chatting calmly, children running and laughing, and outsiders like me, trying to capture the essence of the place in photos that, I hope, convey some of the serenity felt there.

Mas o que realmente me fascinou foram os jardins que a rodeiam. Um espaço verde, tranquilo e cheio de vida, onde podemos ficar sentados num banco e simplesmente observar o mundo passar. Ou, melhor ainda, sentires que o mundo pára por uns momentos só para ti. Durante o nosso passeio, consegui registar momentos de vida natural,idosos a conversar calmamente, crianças a correr e rir, e forasteiros como eu, a tentar capturar a essência do local em fotos que, espero eu, consigam transmitir um pouco da serenidade que ali se sente.

And don't think this village is just about silence and calm. Cinfães comes alive especially during the Feast of Our Lady of Help, one of the most popular in the region. It is here that the church and its gardens become the stage for celebrations that blend faith, tradition, and much joy. During the festival, the streets are filled with music, the smells of traditional food, and smiles. I've often wondered what the true purpose of these festivals is? Are they simply moments of fun? Or are they, in fact, a way to preserve and strengthen a sense of community, to connect with our roots and our identity?

E não pensem que esta aldeia é apenas sobre silêncio e calma. Cinfães ganha vida especialmente durante a Festa de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, uma das mais populares da região. É aqui que a igreja e os seus jardins se transformam no palco de celebrações que misturam fé, tradição e muita alegria. Durante a festa, as ruas enchem-se de música, cheiros de comida tradicional e sorrisos. Já me perguntei muitas vezes qual é o verdadeiro papel destas festas? São apenas momentos de diversão? Ou são, na verdade, um modo de preservar e fortalecer o sentido de comunidade, de nos ligarmos às nossas raízes e à nossa identidade?

As I walked through those gardens, I reflected on the value we place on places where our lives intersect with history. How often do we rush past such places, unaware of what they hold? Can we find time to sit and simply listen to the silence?

Enquanto caminhava por aqueles jardins, refletia sobre o valor que damos aos lugares onde as nossas vidas se cruzam com a história. Quantas vezes passamos apressados por locais assim, sem dar conta do que eles guardam? Será que conseguimos encontrar tempo para nos sentarmos e simplesmente ouvir o silêncio?

The trip to Cinfães and the time spent in the Gardens of the Main Church were an invitation for me to pause, to take a closer, more sensitive look. And, of course, an opportunity to question where else, seemingly ordinary, we're missing the chance to experience something wonderful.

A viagem até Cinfães e o tempo passado nos Jardins da Igreja Matriz foram para mim um convite a essa pausa, a esse olhar mais atento e sensível. E, claro, uma oportunidade para questionar em que outros lugares, aparentemente comuns, estamos a perder a chance de viver algo maravilhoso.

The time you spend in the gardens of an ancient church can be as memorable as a visit to a great monument or a famous city. And if you need a reason to go, remember, sometimes the simplest things can be the most profound.
