Cinfães - Montemuro / Village Center / Riding Portugal

Sometimes the best trips are those where you're not looking for anything in particular. We just follow the path and watch life unfold around us. That's exactly how I arrived in Cinfães, in northern Portugal. A place where people still know each other by name, where there are no large restaurants or crowds, but where simply sitting on a terrace is an experience in itself.

Às vezes, as melhores viagens são aquelas em que não estás à procura de nada em particular . Apenas seguimos caminho e vemos a vida acontecer à nossa volta. Foi exatamente assim que cheguei a Cinfães, no norte de Portugal. Um lugar onde as pessoas ainda se conhecem pelo nome, onde não há grandes restaurantes nem multidões, mas onde o simples facto de sentar numa esplanada já é uma experiência.

Arriving in this village was like stepping into a movie from another time, one where life is made up of small things and time seems to pass at a different speed. During my stroll, I was able to capture life unfolding naturally, a group of elderly people chatting in the street, children playing with the enthusiasm of those still in no rush, and bikers stopping for coffee and a snack at Tasquinha do Amado, a must-see for anyone following the Nacional 222 route, one of the most picturesque and beloved roads in the country, especially for bikers. This tavern, modest in appearance but huge in reputation, is an emblematic meeting point in the area. There, the conversations are warm, the stories flow freely, and the food? Oh, the food is made with that special seasoning that only Portuguese taverns know how to offer—simple, honest, and delicious.

Chegar a esta aldeia foi como entrar num filme de outros tempos, daqueles onde a vida é feita de pequenas coisas e o tempo parece correr numa velocidade diferente. Durante o meu passeio, consegui registar a vida a acontecer de forma natural, um grupo de seniores a conversar na rua, crianças a brincar com o entusiasmo de quem ainda não tem pressa, e os motards a pararem para um café e um petisco na tasquinha do Amado, ponto obrigatório para quem segue a rota da Nacional 222 ,uma das estradas mais pitorescas e apreciadas do país, especialmente pelos motards. Esta tasca, modesta na aparência mas gigante na reputação, é um ponto de encontro emblemático da zona.
Ali, as conversas são calorosas, as histórias correm soltas, e a comida? Ah, a comida é feita com aquele tempero especial que só as tasquinhas portuguesas sabem dar ,simples, honesta e deliciosa.

But Cinfães has more to offer than just hospitality. The Serpa Pinto Museum is one of those surprises that makes us realize that, even in the smallest villages, there's always a great story to tell. Dedicated to the Portuguese explorer Alexandre Alberto da Rocha de Serpa Pinto, the museum displays objects, maps, photographs, and accounts that illustrate this man's travels across the African continent in the 19th century. It's fascinating to think how someone born in such a peaceful and tranquil region could have had a life so full of adventures and challenges.

Mas Cinfães tem mais para oferecer além desta hospitalidade. O Museu Serpa Pinto é uma dessas surpresas que nos faz perceber que, mesmo nas aldeias mais pequenas, há sempre uma história grande para contar. Dedicado ao explorador português Alexandre Alberto da Rocha de Serpa Pinto, o museu apresenta objetos, mapas, fotografias e relatos que ilustram as viagens deste homem pelo continente africano no século XIX. É fascinante pensar como alguém nascido numa região tão tranquila e pacata como esta pôde ter tido uma vida tão cheia de aventuras e desafios.

Speaking of traditions, I couldn't fail to mention the Festa de São João, one of the most anticipated in Cinfães. This celebration blends religious devotion with folklore, music, and plenty of joy. During the festival, the village fills with color, the streets come alive, and even those just passing through feel the contagious energy of the moment. It's incredible how festivals like these manage to keep cultural roots alive while bringing generations together in a spirit of unity and celebration.

Falando em tradições, não podia deixar de mencionar a Festa de São João, uma das mais aguardadas em Cinfães. Esta celebração mistura devoção religiosa com folclore, música e muita alegria. Durante a festa, a aldeia enche-se de cor, as ruas ganham vida, e mesmo quem só passa de visita sente a energia contagiante do momento. É incrível como festas assim conseguem manter vivas as raízes culturais, ao mesmo tempo que juntam gerações num espírito de união e celebração.

While walking around here, I thought a lot about what makes a place truly special. Is it its history? The people? Or perhaps the sense of belonging, even if only for a few days? Maybe it's all of these things. There's something magical about places where life feels simple, where nature and culture live in harmony, and where every face tells a story.

Enquanto caminhava por aqui, pensei muito sobre o que faz um lugar ser verdadeiramente especial. Será a sua história? As pessoas? Ou talvez a sensação de pertencer, mesmo que só por alguns dias? Talvez seja tudo isso junto. Há algo de mágico em lugares onde a vida se sente simples, onde a natureza e a cultura vivem em harmonia, e onde cada rosto conta uma história.

And so, I leave you with a question. When was the last time you stopped to simply watch life unfold? Because sometimes it's in these moments that we find the true meaning of travel. Not only to discover new places, but also to discover new ways of being in the world.
A piece of advice: if you come to Portugal, stop by Cinfães. Beyond Amado's tavern and the Serpa Pinto Museum, there's a whole universe of tranquility, history, and authenticity waiting to be discovered.
