Castelvecchio - Verona / Road Trip Through Italy

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
Still on our first day in Verona, after already wearing out a good amount of our sneakers, we headed towards Castelvecchio, not because it was on a plan that had to be very well defined due to the approaching deadline, but because in Verona, historical landmarks end up crossing our path, and this one in particular has a presence impossible to miss.
PT

The day continued to be perfect, with a clear sky and the sun at just the right point, but without exaggeration. That warm light that makes the best of any place stand out, in this case Verona, especially when it hits the brick and gives that aspect that is impossible not to want to capture. The castle still imposes itself from a distance, solid and heavy, even austere. It is not delicate or romantic, unlike some places we visited previously; this one is direct, military and practical, which makes it particularly interesting.

Castelvecchio was built of red brick, designed to withstand the elements, as was the purpose of any fortress of this magnitude. But those times are long gone, and today it's designed solely to please visitors, like many of the castles I usually visit in Portugal :) The robust walls, the angular towers, and the battlements create a strong silhouette, with warm tones that contrast beautifully with the surrounding green and the light tone of the stone of the Scaligero Bridge, which extends from the castle as a natural extension of the fortress.

The visit was worthwhile even just for a walk around the exterior; imagine enjoying the whole experience. There's a strange, almost physical sensation of standing before something you've seen far more than we'll ever see again, at least not in that form, with wars, sieges, and constant power shifts… and now, tourists with backpacks and cell phones in hand. Life has a curious sense of humor, but I prefer the latter.

We calmly crossed the inner courtyard, observing the details, the narrow windows, the arches, and the passageways that seem to have been made to confuse potential invaders. Everything there has a defensive logic, but at the same time there is a certain harmony in the whole. Nothing is superfluous, nothing is there by chance.
Then, of course, there is the Scaligero Bridge. For me, one of the highlights of Castelvecchio, but one that I decided to address in a separate article, which I will post soon.

The Adige River flows calmly, so calmly that it seems like a mirror reflecting the sky and the colors of the city. The water had that greenish hue, which someone, at a certain point that I don't remember exactly now, said was the characteristic tone. I stopped there for a few minutes, just observing. People passing by, others taking pictures, some simply leaning against the wall, like me, enjoying the moment.
This is what usually happens when I stop for a moment just to observe, the routine life happening.

The atmosphere was light, despite the historical weight of the place; everything made us feel relaxed. Perhaps because of the sun, or because Verona knows how to balance the past and the present very well. Castelvecchio doesn't seem like a place stuck in time. On the contrary, it seems like a space that has adapted, that has found a new way of existing, which I believe is thanks to many public initiatives for reuse, and perhaps even some private investment, I'm not sure.
PT

This ended up being one of those visits that didn't have that factor of astonishment or fascination, but that remains registered somewhere in the memory to be recalled later. In my opinion, it's not the most photogenic place in Verona in the classic sense, and from the information I obtained after some research, it's also not the most famous among first-time visitors, but it certainly has a presence.

It was only the first day and Verona had already made it clear that it wasn't just going to be a beautiful city, but a city composed of several layers, and Castelvecchio was an excellent way to start peeling them back :)
PT
I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
