Caminho de Sta Luzia - Arnóia / Riding Portugal
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
There are places that don't need big attractions to win us over, all they need is that good dose of authenticity that we are always looking for as we look for new places to visit, with some cobblestone streets and the silence of simple things. That was exactly what I found on a sunny afternoon in Arnóia, a small village located in the parish of Arnóia, in the municipality of Celorico de Basto, in the north of Portugal.

We arrived after lunch, on one of those pleasant days when the weather seems to fit our mood perfectly. Neither too hot nor too cold, simply mild, accompanied by a gentle breeze, the golden sun peeking down from above, filtered by the leaves of the vegetation that accompanies us, and the promise of a peaceful afternoon.

I started the walk along the Caminho de Santa Luzia, a small route that winds through the hillsides and intersects with the history of the small village of Arnóia. It is an easy and charming route, surrounded by greenery, where you can only hear your own footsteps and the sounds of nature, perhaps a bell in the distance coming from one of the many chapels that are spread throughout the valley or even the muffled voices of some tourists and locals working the land.

This path takes us to see Arnóia from angles that are not normally seen, through the backs of houses, along moss-covered slopes, through small forgotten squares that look more like scenes from an old postcard.

Upon entering the village itself, the scenery changes a little with its narrow stone streets, lined with old granite houses, inviting you to take a leisurely stroll. Many of these houses have been tastefully restored and transformed into tourist accommodation, with renovated facades but respecting the traditional style. It's beautiful to see how tourism here has not changed the character of the town, but has revived it.

There are small details that enchant, such as flowers on the eaves, slate plaques with house names, balconies with views of the valley. There is a discreet care in maintaining the soul of the place.

Despite the visible recovery, there are still vacant houses, some with broken windows or warped doors. In many of them, large signs announce: For sale. I stopped in front of some and wrote down their contact details. I confess that the idea of having a refuge here, even if it’s a small one, seemed more than a daydream to me. After all, Arnóia has everything to be one of those places where you go to disconnect, to write, read, or simply listen to time pass by.

I think about how lucky those who stay here for a weekend, far from the noise of the cities, are. But I also think about the privilege it would be to live in a place like this, with its own rhythm, where every corner holds a memory.

Arnóia is not in a hurry, nor are there large crowds. It has paths that make us walk inside, houses that tell stories without words, and a rhythm of life that reminds us that the essential, often, is in the small details.

If you are looking for a place where time moves slowly and where the stone still smells of history, perhaps Arnóia will also speak to you. Who knows, maybe the same idea that occurred to me that afternoon will whisper in your ear: What if one day I stayed here?

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health

I was delighted with your photographs of the place, it is a very beautiful place, as I imagine it would be my ideal place to live. A simple place, away from the city and surrounded by nature.
Beautiful village
The place is enchanting and it looks like you're in Medieval Period but in modern day. It leaves an awe expression to me, also the photos taken are really pretty.

I love the lack of people haha. But truly a lovely place. I love the views and even the ruins give it a different dimension. A nice little gem. :)
Indeed you're right about the authenticity of the place. Thank you very much for sharing this beautiful piece.
