Basílica de Sta Anastácia - Verona / Road Trip Through Italy

After arriving in Verona, we did what I think many people don't do: we took a detour and, before immersing ourselves in the city of Romeo and Juliet, decided to visit Peschiera del Garda nearby. And thank goodness, because that place is indeed very beautiful, just as it's shown in magazines and tourist postcards, and in many cases even more beautiful in person, with its water in different shades of blue and green, historic walls, and that characteristic rhythm of such a magical place—one of those places that's hard to leave behind, but it had to be done, however difficult it might be. Verona was waiting, and unfortunately, time isn't infinite, and in our case, it was meticulously timed.

Depois de chegar a Verona, fizemos aquilo que acho que muita gente não faz, desviámo-nos e antes de mergulhar na cidade de Romeu e Julieta, decidimos ir ali ao lado conhecer Peschiera del Garda. E ainda bem, porque aquele lugar é de facto muito belo, tal e qual como é mostrado nas revistas e postais turísticos, e em muitos dos casos até bem mais belo ao vivo, com aquela água de diferentes tons de azul e verde, muralhas históricas e aquele ritmo característico de um sítio assim, mágico, daqueles sítios difíceis de deixar para trás, mas tinha de ser, por muito difícil que fosse, Verona estava à espera e infelizmente o tempo não é infinito, e no nosso caso estava meticulosamente cronometrado.

It was with a certain imposed tranquility that we finally entered the city. No close-ups or endless lists; the objective was simple: to walk, observe, and discover. We started around the Basilica of Santa Anastasia, which, incidentally, is an excellent starting point for exploring the beautiful city of Verona.

Foi com uma certa tranquilidade imposta que entrámos finalmente na cidade. Nada de grandes planos nem listas infinitas, o objetivo era simples, andar, observar e descobrir, e começámos pela zona envolvente da Basílica de Santa Anastácia, que, diga-se de passagem, é um excelente ponto de partida para conhecer a bela cidade de Verona.

The weather continued to facilitate our visit, with clear skies, a pleasant sun, and a golden light that greatly enhanced the visual appeal of the city. Verona has warm colors, terracotta tones, very soft and neutral colors with its worn but preserved facades. Everything seems old, even what isn't so old, perhaps due to the way they think about and work with landscape architecture here; everything is very bright and vibrant.

O clima continuou a facilitar-nos a visita, com o céu limpo, um sol simpático e uma luz dourada muito favorável na valorização visual da cidade. Verona tem cores quentes, tons de terracota, cores muito suaves e neutras com as suas fachadas gastas mas preservadas. Tudo parece antigo, mesmo aquilo que não é assim tão antigo, talvez devido à forma como pensam e trabalham a arquitetura paisagista por aqui, tudo muito lúcido e vivo.

The Basilica of Santa Anastasia stands out not only for its size but also for its elegant Gothic structure, with a solid and serene presence. Outside, the light stone contrasts with the blue of the sky and the shadows cast by the neighboring buildings. Inside, the atmosphere changes completely as the light filters through the stained glass, illuminating the frescoes and sculpted details, compelling those who enter to peek inside to slow down and remain silent, even if no one asks.

A Basílica de Santa Anastácia impõe-se não só pela dimensão, mas também pela sua estrutura gótica e elegante, com uma presença sólida e serena. Cá fora, a pedra clara contrasta com o azul do céu e com as sombras projetadas pelas construções vizinhas. Lá dentro, o ambiente muda completamente com a luz a entrar filtrada pelos vitrais, iluminando os frescos e os detalhes esculpidos, obrigando quem ali entra para espreitar a abrandar o ritmo e manter o silêncio, mesmo que ninguém o peça.

Around the basilica, life goes on as normal, with people passing by, bicycles leaning against centuries-old walls, and small, discreet cafes. I particularly like this area because it's not overly touristy. We're not yet in the epicenter of the hustle and bustle, and you can see that. There's a sense of authenticity, of real everyday life, that makes everything more interesting.

À volta da basílica, a vida segue o seu curso normal, com as pessoa a passar, bicicletas encostadas a paredes centenárias, pequenos cafés discretos. Gosto particularmente desta zona porque não é excessivamente turística. Ainda não estamos no epicentro do burburinho, e isso nota-se. Há uma sensação de autenticidade, de quotidiano real, que torna tudo mais interessante.

We continued through the adjacent narrow streets, many of them irregular and full of surprises. Verona is great at this because you turn a corner and the scenery changes: a small square here, a flowery balcony there, an old shop that seems to have been there forever. The sounds also begin to seem familiar and welcoming after spending some time walking through these Italian streets: conversations in Italian, cutlery clinking on plates somewhere on a small terrace around the corner, laughter and whispers, and the occasional random musical chord.

Seguimos pelas ruas estreitas adjacentes, muitas delas irregulares e cheias de surpresas. Verona é ótima nisso pois dobra-se uma esquina e muda o cenário, uma pequena praça aqui, uma varanda florida ali, uma loja antiga que parece existir desde sempre. Os sons também começam a parecer familiares e acolhedores, depois de passar algum tempo a passear por estas ruas de itália, conversas em italiano, talheres a bater em pratos algures numa pequena esplanada ao virar da esquina, risos e sussurros e um ou outro acorde musical aleatório.

What I liked most about this area was the balance where very little seemed forced. The architecture blends the religious, the medieval, and the residential in a natural way. The facades don't need to be perfect; the marks of time are part of the charm. She is an imperfect, honest beauty who doesn't try to impress, and perhaps that's why she impressed me even more.
When we find ourselves stopping, not to take a picture but just to look, it's a sign that something is very right in that place, but of course, the photo comes soon after, always thinking about sharing it here :)

O que mais me agradou nesta zona foi o equilíbrio onde muito pouco pareceu forçado. A arquitetura mistura o religioso, o medieval e o residencial de forma natural. As fachadas não precisam de ser perfeitas, as marcas do tempo fazem parte do charme. É uma beleza imperfeita, honesta, que não tenta impressionar e talvez por isso me tenha impressionado ainda mais.
Quando damos por nós a parar, não para tirar uma fotografia mas apenas para olhar, é sinal de que algo está muito certo naquele lugar, mas claro que logo depois vem a foto, sempre a pensar em partilhar aqui :)

Verona started like this for us, calm, luminous, full of subtle details. The area of ​​the Basilica of Santa Anastasia doesn't have the drama of the Arena or the obvious romanticism of Juliet's House, but it has something equally valuable, the soul. It's the kind of place you don't impose on, but stay in, and sometimes that's exactly what we look for when we travel.

Verona começou assim para nós, calma, luminosa, cheia de detalhes subtis. A zona da Basílica de Santa Anastácia não tem o dramatismo da Arena nem o romantismo óbvio da Casa de Julieta, mas tem algo igualmente valioso, a alma. É o tipo de sítio que não se impõe, mas fica, e às vezes é exatamente isso que procuramos quando viajamos.
