Baião - Santo António de Riba Douro - Ribadouro / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
The stop in Ribadouro happened by chance, after a few hours of wandering through Baião and traveling along the narrow roads of that area. We were on our way to another place, already a little dazed by so many twists and turns, when we decided to stop near the river after seeing the small stone church nestled right beside the road. I don't know if I had passed there before in my life. Most likely in my childhood, but if it happened, it got lost somewhere among many other trips and confused memories that remained in the past.

The first impact was the tranquility of the place, without much of a crowd of people and well located. A natural calm, which doesn't care about those who pass by, as in our case. The river flowed slowly, wide, with that dark and heavy tone typical of this area of the Douro. On the other side are the enormous mountains, covered in trees, some areas denser, others clearly burned or cut at different times. Everything seemed very distant despite being right there in front of us.

The Church of Ribadouro is in a rather interesting position. Small, built of light granite already worn by time, without many details. I liked that.
The afternoon sun was strong and the sky was clear, intensely blue, with practically no clouds. The heat was more noticeable than I expected for this time of year. There was a mixed smell of water, earth, and stone warmed by the sun. And the constant sound of the river ended up filling all the silences.

Further up, the enormous railway viaduct completely dominated the landscape. It impresses with its size. The stone arches rise above the trees and small houses of the village with an almost absurd presence for such a small place. I spent some time looking at it. There are old structures that age well because they seem to have been built for that. This viaduct is one of those cases.

Next to the bridge there was also an old fountain, already quite marked by humidity and moss. The water continued to flow slowly.
Few people passed by while we were there. An occasional car. Someone on the other side of the road talking on their cell phone. And, near the river, the unexpected sound of a jet ski cut through all that calm for a few seconds before disappearing into the distance again.

A água continuava a correr lentamente.

I sat on a small wall near the church looking at the river and the slopes on the other side. Nothing major happened, just the peace and quiet.
When we left, I had the feeling that Ribadouro wasn't just a place to pass through. Maybe I'll come back to explore more.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
