Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

Today we'll spend some time beside the Ria Formosa, a magical place where everything around us conspires to make us stay there, still, absorbing our surroundings. I, who have so often passed through the Algarve's landscapes almost on autopilot (perhaps due to my young age), finally decided to indulge myself... Without a watch, without a destination, with only curiosity as my compass. And so I let myself be carried along the trails of the Ria Formosa, a unique ecosystem in southern Portugal, where sea and land connect in a dance that has lasted centuries.

Hoje vamos passar um tempinho junto à Ria Formosa, um lugar mágico onde tudo à volta conspira para que fiquemos ali, parados, a absorver o que nos rodeia. Eu, que tantas vezes passei pelas paisagens do Algarve quase em piloto automático (talvez dada a tenra idade), decidi, por fim, conceder-me um passeio... Sem relógio, sem destino , apenas com a curiosidade como bússola. E foi assim que me deixei levar pelos trilhos da Ria Formosa, um ecossistema único no sul de Portugal, onde o mar e a terra se conectam numa dança que dura há séculos.

The sun was already low in the sky, a few clouds hovering, but with a scorching heat. The banks of the estuary, with their irregular shapes, were softly outlined by reeds and undergrowth. Small boats rested on the tide or glided peacefully, sometimes driven by fishermen with skin tanned by salt and sun, sometimes by tourists enchanted by the uniqueness of this paradise.

O sol já ia baixo no céu, algumas nuvens que pairavam, mas com um calor abrasador. As margens da ria, com os seus recortes irregulares, eram delineadas com suavidade por juncos e vegetação rasteira. As pequenas embarcações repousavam sobre a maré ou deslizavam pacificamente, ora conduzidas por pescadores de pele curtida pelo sal e pelo sol, ora por turistas encantados com a singularidade deste paraíso.

Ria Formosa is not just beautiful, it is alive. And this is felt in every reflection in the water, in every bird chirping over the channels, in every shell pushed by the wind across the sand. On this side, the banks with their white houses and orange groves, and on the other, a long line of fine, light sand, separating the tranquility of the estuary from the grandeur of the Atlantic. This contrast is more than geographic; it is almost poetic. It is as if nature here has decided to offer the best of both worlds: the mirrored peace of the estuary and the rebellious energy of the open sea.

A Ria Formosa não é apenas bonita, é viva. E isso sente-se em cada reflexo na água, em cada chilrear de ave que sobrevoa os canais, em cada concha que o vento empurra pelo areal. Do lado de cá, as margens com as suas casas brancas e laranjais e do lado de lá, uma longa linha de areia fina e clara, que separa a tranquilidade da ria da grandiosidade do Atlântico. Este contraste é mais do que geográfico, é quase poético. É como se a natureza aqui tivesse decidido oferecer o melhor de dois mundos, a paz espelhada da ria e a energia rebelde do mar aberto.

The photos I took during this trip are not just images; they are humble attempts to capture what, ultimately, is impossible to fully capture. The lens captures the light, the movement, the composition, but it doesn't capture the smell of the sea air, nor the gentle warmth of the late afternoon breeze, nor the distant sound of a two-stroke engine gently cutting through the water's surface. And much less can it capture that rare sense of fulfillment that invades us when we realize that, there, everything is in balance.

As fotos que tirei durante este passeio não são apenas imagens, são tentativas humildes de fixar o que, no fundo, é impossível capturar completamente. A lente apanha a luz, o movimento, a composição, mas não apanha o cheiro a maresia, nem o calor suave da brisa de fim de tarde, nem o som distante de um motor a dois tempos a cortar suavemente a superfície da água. E muito menos consegue captar aquela sensação rara de plenitude, que nos invade quando percebemos que, ali, tudo está em equilíbrio.

In the estuary, the boats aren't just for leisure. Many of them are an extension of the lives of those who work here. I saw men mending nets, women sitting in small boats preparing fishing traps, and I saw children, joyful and carefree, jumping in the water as if it were their second home. There's a palpable intimacy between these people and this place, as if they couldn't exist separately.

Na ria, os barcos não servem apenas para lazer. Muitos deles são a extensão da vida de quem aqui trabalha. Vi homens a remendar redes, mulheres sentadas em pequenas embarcações a preparar armadilhas de pesca, e vi crianças, alegres e despreocupadas, a saltar para a água como se esta fosse a sua segunda casa. Há uma intimidade palpável entre estas pessoas e este lugar, como se não pudessem existir separadamente.

As I walked along one of the wooden boardwalks, I let my thoughts drift to the rhythm of the tide's ebb and flow. Sometimes, you need to step away from the daily hustle and bustle to hear clearly what's going on inside. And there, surrounded by natural beauty and silence punctuated only by the sounds of simple life, I found myself reflecting on the fragility and strength of places like this, because this ecosystem is sensitive to climate change, pollution, and mismanaged tourism, molding itself to the will of nature and the needs of humanity. In this thought, I also found a reflection of ourselves, fragile yet stubbornly resilient, seeking balance between who we are and what the world demands of us.

Enquanto caminhava por um dos passadiços de madeira, deixei que os pensamentos se soltassem ao ritmo do vaivém da maré. Às vezes, é preciso afastarmo-nos do rebuliço diário para ouvir com clareza o que se passa cá dentro. E ali, rodeada de beleza natural e silêncio apenas entrecortado pelos sons da vida simples, dei por mim a pensar na fragilidade e na força dos lugares como este, porque este ecossistema é sensível às alterações climáticas, à poluição, ao turismo mal gerido, moldando-se às vontades da natureza e às necessidades dos homens. Nesse pensamento encontrei também um reflexo de nós próprios, frágeis, mas teimosamente resistentes, procurando equilíbrio entre o que somos e o que o mundo exige de nós.

I walked a little further, until I found a small pier, where two elderly men were chatting while sharing a piece of bread and cheese, sitting on a bench worn by the sun and salt. I greeted them with a discreet wave, and one of them responded with a wide smile, the kind that has seen many summers. I exchanged a few words with them, more out of respect than necessity, and then continued on my way, taking with me that simple and comforting image.

Andei ainda mais um pouco, até encontrar um pequeno cais, onde dois homens idosos conversavam enquanto partilhavam um pedaço de pão e queijo, sentados num banco gasto pelo sol e pelo sal. Cumprimentei-os com um aceno discreto e um deles respondeu-me com um sorriso aberto, daqueles que já viram muitos verões. Troquei duas ou três palavras com eles, mais por respeito do que por necessidade, e depois continuei o meu caminho, levando comigo aquela imagem simples e reconfortante.

The Ria Formosa, that late afternoon, offered me much more than a setting for beautiful photographs. He showed me how small gestures and discreet places can possess a depth that escapes us in everyday life. And as the sun set, and the shadows began to draw new contours across the landscape, I realized that true beauty often lies in knowing how to stop and look.

A Ria Formosa, naquele fim de tarde, ofereceu-me muito mais do que um cenário para fotografias bonitas. Mostrou-me como os pequenos gestos e os lugares discretos podem ter uma profundidade que nos escapa no dia a dia. E enquanto o sol se despedia, e as sombras começavam a desenhar novos contornos na paisagem, percebi que a verdadeira beleza está, muitas vezes, em saber parar e olhar.

Maybe I'll be back soon. Or maybe not. But that afternoon stayed with me like good books or good conversations, like something not easily explained, but intensely felt. That's what makes these walks more than just strolls. He transforms them into small chapters in a life that aims to be filled with such places and people.

Talvez volte em breve. Ou talvez não. Mas aquela tarde ficou em mim como ficam os bons livros ou as boas conversas, como algo que não se explica facilmente, mas que se sente intensamente. É isso que faz destes passeios algo mais do que simples caminhadas. Transforma-os em pequenos capítulos de uma vida que se quer cheia de lugares e pessoas assim.
